Sustainability Today 401 Generating a new image for cultural heritage: model for preserving the typical image of the traditional Turkish coffeehouse N. Ayalp & A. Müge Bozday TOBB University, Turkey Abstract The aim of the study is to create a model for a reusing a specific cultural setting. Traditional Turkish coffeehouses are selected as a traditional environment. The coffeehouse, which has been used in Turkey since the sixteenth century, is one of the most significant places in the country’s cultural heritage. Coffeehouses are one of the public spaces that represent the place identity of Turkish culture. During the Ottoman period, with their frequent use, people helped these places gain place identities. Moreover, not just the space but the ways in which people become socialized represent an intangible part of our cultural heritage. However, previous studies indicate that this cultural value has not been sufficiently transferred to the present day. This study identifies the traditional Turkish coffeehouse as contributing to both tangible and intangible cultural heritage and generates a model for interpreting the coffeehouse in terms of a contemporary place identity. In order to do this, the concept of place, place identity, and social identity is discussed. Turkish coffeehouses are analyzed to identify and their typical spatial elements. In the conclusion, a model for preserving the typical image of the traditional Turkish coffeehouse is presented. A Chapter in the History of Coffee: A Critical Edition and Translation of Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī’s Epistle on Coffee Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Heather Marie Sweetser, B.A. Graduate Program in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures The Ohio State University 2012 Thesis Committee: Dr. Georges Tamer, Advisor Dr. Joseph Zeidan Copyright by Heather Marie Sweetser 2012 Abstract What follows is an edition and translation of an Arabic manuscript written by Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī in 1171/1758 in defense of coffee as per Islamic legality. He cites the main objections to coffee drinking and refutes them systematically using examples from Islamic jurisprudence to back up his points. The author also includes lines of poetry in his epistle in order to defend coffee’s legality. This particular manuscript is important due to its illustrious author as well as to its content, as few documents describing the legal issues surrounding coffee at such a late date have been properly explored by coffee historians. The dictionary Ta>j al-ʿAru>s, authored by Murtad}a> az-Zabīdī himself, as well as Edward Lane’s dictionary, were used to translate the manuscript, which was first edited. Unfortunately, I was only able to acquire one complete and one incomplete manuscript; other known manuscripts were unavailable. Arabic mistakes in the original have been corrected and the translation is annotated to provide appropriate background to the epistle’s commentary. A brief introduction to the history of coffee, a sample of the debate surrounding the legality of coffee in Islam, and a biography of the author is provided. -

ARCHITECTURAL AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION OF OLD HOUSES BALTAZZI’S OLD PROPERTIES IN ISTANBUL Houses- Appartments - Mansions-Yalis - Hans and Farms Introduction I am happy to have concluded this research which I had in mind for a long time. I was of course encouraged by the positive trend of continuing group research on the history of Levantines. This work is also aimed as a message to encourage the preservation of the architectural and historical heritage of the city of Istanbul and I am grateful for the help from friends and the efficient assistance of my offices in both cities. The Baltazzi famiy, although since the XVIIIth century were living in Izmir have also maintained close relations from that time with the capital Istanbul due to their business activites in finance and banking as well as due their close relations with the Ottoman Court. Some other Levantive and Greek families such as the Whittals, the La Fontaines, the Mavrogordato, the Sevastopoulos to cite a few also acquired a range of proprieties and hade members of these numerous families resident in both cities and various neighbourhoods. 1- HOUSES The emminent authority on Ottoman Banking History Pr. Haydar Kazgan and many other authors mention that the first permission to a foreigner to own a house was given in recognition of the services rendered to the Sultan to my great great grand father the Banker Emanuele Baltazzi around 1850 whereas the official permission for foreigners to own real-estate was granted only in 1867. Where was this house situated? Akylas Millas in his “Pera Crossroads of Constantinople” gives as location the Bonmarche at Istanbul Grand Rue de Pera (today Istiklal Caddesi of Beyoğlu) saying “The Bartoli brothers famous for Au Bon Marche department store occupied the ground floor of a neo-classical building erected in 1870 on the site of the residence of Manolaki Valtadji efendi which burnt in the frequent fires which occurred in Pera”.
