Rooted in tradition · Exploring the future Vol. 46 · Issue #1 Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013 Loyalist College · Belleville, ON · Canada Stirling welcomes Hockeyville By Christopher King Kraft Hockeyville descended upon the town of Stirling-Rawdon and District for a second year on Sept. 14. Hockeyville is a program that is award- ed to the town that demonstrates its love for hockey and the ability of a community to come together to show that. Commu- nities that win are awarded $100,000 and two NHL teams host an exhibition game and Hockey Night in Canada broadcasts in the community. Last year, the NHL lockout prevented any exhibition games. This year, however, the lack of a lockout allowed the Winni- peg Jets to compete against the Washing- ton Capitals. At the Stirling-Rawdon and District Recreation Centre, Kraft Hockeyville laid out the red carpet on the ice for the Stanley Cup. Four players, two from each team, attended a question-and-answer period before families took their turn tak- ing photos of themselves with the cup. Guests wrote down questions and the NHL players responded in person at the arena. The questions varied from the players’ choice of video games to whether or not they would marry one audience member. They were asked about their routine and their favourite or least favou- rite parts about hockey. Photo by Samantha Pyear “It varies Monday through Saturday. • Ituna Arena's Quest for Kraft Hockeyville
Ituna Arena’s Quest for Kraft Hockeyville Ituna’s quest for Kraft Hockeyville began in February of 2017 with a call from the community to the people of Ituna and surrounding area for nominations describing the town’s passion for hockey as well as it’s need for funds. The citizens responded in an enormous way with dozens and dozens of nominations recalling memories and experiences at the arena, stories of inclusion, team building, and hockey played in Ituna, as well as heartfelt pleas for funds to repair our aging arena infrastructure. On March 4th, during Hockey Night in Canada, it was announced that Ituna Arena had been chosen as one of the Top Ten hockey arenas in Canada. Of the 2932 communities nominated, Sean and Tamara Trefiak’s heartfelt submission garnered Ituna a coveted spot in the Top Ten. While being in the top ten was a celebratory feat in itself, with its guarantee of $25,000, Ituna had our sights set much higher. As the oldest rink, and the smallest community, Ituna wanted a coveted spot in the top two, which would earn $100,000 as well as hosting an NHL game for the winning community. There would be a 39-hour window during which people from across Canada could vote as many times as possible to determine the top two communities. Our work was cut out for us. A Hockeyville Committee was quickly formed, and a plan implemented to share Ituna’s story – the story of a small Saskatchewan town that could. Press releases were sent out, and a social media campaign was 1 formed.

  • Eagle River One of Four Finalists for Kraft Hockeyville™ USA Winner Gets NHL Pre-Season Game and $150,000 in Rink Upgrades; Voting Starts March 30
Eagle River One of Four Finalists for Kraft Hockeyville™ USA Winner Gets NHL Pre-Season Game and $150,000 in Rink Upgrades; Voting Starts March 30 EAGLE RIVER, Wisconsin (March 25, 2019) – Eagle River will be one of four communities vying for the coveted title of Kraft Hockeyville™ USA 2019. Sponsored by Kraft Heinz in conjunction with National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL), the award gives the winning community the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game and receive $150,000 in rink upgrades. The other three communities competing for the Hockeyville title include Calumet, Michigan; Cadillac, Michigan; and Sartell, Minnesota. The contest’s runner-up will receive $30,000 in rink upgrades, and each second-place rink will receive $10,000 in rink upgrades. In addition, each of the four finalists will receive $10,000 worth of new hockey equipment from the NHLPA Goals & Dreams program. Eagle River’s passion for hockey dates to 1933, when the Eagle River Sports Arena was opened. The legendary dome was expanded in 1963 and again in 1995-96, when an Olympic-sized second rink was added to accommodate demand from recreational players in the region. In 1975, it became home to the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame – the only state hockey Hall of Fame in the country. Eagle River also hosts the annual Labatt Blue USA Adult Pond Hockey Championships. Held on nearby Dollar Lake the 2019 event boasted 300 teams and more than 2,000 players facing off in 20 non-check divisions. The Eagle River Sports Arena’s operator, the non-profit Eagle River Recreation Association, is currently in the midst of a $1.5 million fundraising drive to fix the arena – Save the Dome.
