CANADIAN BROADCAST STANDARDS COUNCIL NATIONAL SPECIALTY SERVICES PANEL MTV Canada re an episode of MTV Live (“Self Love”) (CBSC Decision 06/07-0763) Decided May 1, 2007 R. Cohen (Chair), R. Deverell (ad hoc), M. Harris, M. Hogarth, P. O’Neill, H. Pawley, M. Ziniak (ad hoc) THE FACTS MTV Live is a youth-oriented magazine/talk program broadcast on MTV Canada. The episode in question aired from 7:30-8:30 am on February 27, 2007. It appeared to be a rerun of a previously aired episode because the hosts referred to “tonight”. The episode was hosted by Daryn Jones, Jessi Cruickshank and Diane Salema. The theme of the episode was “self love”, i.e. masturbation. The episode did not contain any viewer advisories. It was rated PG. During the program, a box was present in the lower right-hand corner of the screen that showed the comments of viewers who were participating in the live online chat session. The majority of the comments referred to the topic of day, masturbation. Also, at some points during the program, facts and information about masturbation and related topics appeared in words in a crawl at the bottom of the screen. Diane introduced the topic of the day at the beginning of the program in the following terms (a more complete transcript of the relevant portions of the program can be found in Appendix A): Um yeah, today’s topic on the show is about masturbation. Yeah, so let’s get in to chat and talk about this, ’cause this is gonna be a good one.

Theatrical Booking Festival Booking and Contact: Publicity Contact: Clemence Taillandier / Zeitgeist Films Nadja Tennstedt / Zeitgeist Films 212-274-1989 x18 212-274-1989 x15 [email protected] [email protected] a zeitgeist films release act of god a film by Jennifer Baichwal Is being hit by lightning a random natural occurrence or a predestined event? Accidents, chance, fate and the elusive quest to make sense out of tragedy underpin director Jennifer Baichwal’s (Manufactured Landscapes) captivating new work, an elegant cinematic meditation on the metaphysical effects of being struck by lightning. To explore these profound questions, Baichwal sought out riveting personal stories from around the world—from a former CIA assassin and a French storm chas- er, to writer Paul Auster and improvisational musician Fred Frith. The philosophical anchor of the film, Auster was caught in a terrifying and deadly storm as a teenager, and it has deeply affected both his life and art: “It opened up a whole realm of speculation that I’ve continued to live with ever since.” In his doctor brother’s laboratory, Frith experiments with his guitar to demonstrate the ubiquity of electricity in our bodies and the universe. Visually dazzling and aurally seductive, Act of God singularly captures the harsh beauty of the skies and the lives of those who have been forever touched by their fury. DIRECTOR’S NOTES I studied philosophy and theology before turning to documentary and, in some ways, the questions I was drawn to then are the ones I still grapple with now, although in a different context. Two of these, which specifically inform this film, are the relationship between meaning and randomness and the classical problem of evil.

  • Canadian Television 2015 a Guide to Current Production
CANADIAN TELEVISION 2015 A GUIDE TO CURRENT PRODUCTION Prepared for Michael Hennessy, President & CEO Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) Curated by Bill Brioux CANADIAN TELEVISION 2015 1 A GUIDE TO CURRENT PRODUCTION CANADIAN TV ENTERS A GOLDEN AGE For the last 30 years, in my time reporting on it, television in Canada has undergone many changes. The one constant, however, has been the nagging impression that Canadian television is somehow inferior to the US brand. This notion has only intensified in recent years, in what some call the new “Golden Age” of TV drama. So, as many have been asking, where is Canada’s Golden Age? Well, you’ll find it in the pages of this book. Not everything that comes out of Canada is the quality of The Sopranos or Mad Men or Breaking Bad. Then again, few shows from America can come close to Bill Brioux these classics. The fact is Fargo, the most-nominated TV series at the 2014 Emmy Awards, is produced in the province of Alberta. Yes, the producers and many of the stars are Americans, but you should hear them gush about Canadian crews. Billy Bob Thornton, for one, is a fan. “One night, it went down to 40 below and they wouldn’t allow us to work,” he told me of working near Calgary on Fargo. “You figure if a Canadian says it’s too dangerous to go out there, it probably is too dangerous to go out.” FX Networks, considered the top non-premium US cable brand and a rival to HBO overall, invested The fact is television $100 million in Canada during the past TV season.
