ADAM HILLS Comedian/Writer/Broadcaster/Presenter Adam Hills is one of Australia’s best-known comedians, mainly as the five- time Gold Logie nominated host of his two hit ABC TV series – the music quiz show Spicks and Specks and his unique take on the late night talk show, Adam Hills Tonight. Already a gold-plated star in Australia, Adam has now taken the UK by storm with his own talk show on Channel Four, The Last Leg. Originally a one-off series for the 2012 London Paralympics, the Poms loved him so much it has been on air ever since! In 2020, Adam also managed to sneak home to reboot ‘Spicks’ for a group of specials airing in 2021 on the ABC. When Adam isn’t dominating the global TV landscape, he is usually somewhere in the world with a mic in hand doing his day job – globetrotting stand-up comedian. MarchFebruary 2001 2004 Comedy Preview Appeared in - The Adelaide Review Adelaide Fringe Before television re-discovered Australian humour and FM breakfast executives began strip-mining the stand-up industry, comedy at the Adelaide Fringe was all one big lucky dip where Funny Stories, LosTrios Ringbarkus, the Doug Anthony Allstars, Flacco, the Jet Black Cowboy and the Castanet Club could all be found. Now we know our comics through Rove and ABC vehicles like The Glass House so many comedians already have a profile and a pedigree. Looking through the list for 2004 there are quite a few household names and they will be rewarded for their familiarity with queues around the block and standing room only signs. Fringe comedy is always the most popular and, one would hope, the most commercially successful category in the festival. But maybe it’s starting to get a little tired. I have to say there are notable absences this year and the diversity, as in many parts of our cultural ecosystem, is starting to dwindle just a little. Lets start with the good news. Some legends are listed here. With Gud, Paul McDermott presents his patented line in vehement wit, mixed with music from his own fine pipes and the talents of Cameron Bruce and Mick Moriarty. Dave Hughes comes out of the glass house and back to his true calling in the colosseum of stand-up and Rod Quantock, the most reasonable, funny and politically corrosive commentator in the country will provide therapeutic counsel back at the Nova. Also, Lano and Woodley, are back with the The Island a new show undoubtedly garnished with all the pratfalls, regressed physicality and social incompetence which has made them hilarious and irresistible in the past.

Wil Anderson Comedian/Writer/Broadcaster/Presenter Wil is a stand up first and foremost, touring Australia and the world at every opportunity, performing more than a hundred shows a year. His stand up is a densely written, high- speed ride through one of the most wonderful comedic imaginations in the world. Politics, pop and the banal come together in a Wil Anderson routine, always delivered with more conviction and enthusiasm than any man’s vocal chords can take. Since 2008 Wil has hosted ABC TV's highest rating program The Gruen Transfer series- a role that saw him nominated for a Gold Logie in 2010, and spawned spin offs, Gruen Nation, Gruen Sweat and Gruen Planet. In 2013, Gruen Nation did a 4 week special, looking in depth into the Australian Election Campaign. After a year off in 2014, Gruen made a much anticipated return to our screens in the second half of 2015. The latest 2016 series of Gruen has been a smash hit, consistently being one of the most watched television programs in Australia and a critical success. The last few years have really seen Wil return to focussing on his stand up. He has performed in every corner of the USA, as well as Canada, Ireland, Edinburgh, and in London’s West End. In 2013, Wil was invited to perform at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, performing alongside some of the world’s best comedians. Whilst there, he hosted a television special for Channel 7, Wil Does Montreal, giving us behind the scenes access to this prestigious festival and some of its performers.

It demonstrates how the ABC is fulfilling its Charter by providing access to programs and platforms so that more Australians than ever can join Heather joined the conversation. IN 2010 –11, THE ABC continued to provide new and innovative ways for Australians to join the national conversation. ABC content was created and shared on-air, online and on mobile platforms. Audiences were enabled by social media and new technology to access and be a part of ABC content: the twitter feed on Q&A enabled audiences to interact with live panel discussions; apps on smartphones and tablet devices connected audiences with content on-the-go; audiences were kept up-to-date on their favourite programs via facebook; YouTube provided audiences with a sneak-peak at Angry Boys; video was contributed to Hungry Beast and shared with the world on the program’s website. The national conversation is a particularly important one for communities during times of emergencies. The ABC served a vital function not only in broadcasting accurate and timely information, but in helping communities recover in the months that followed. ABC Open is part of that lifeline, providing opportunities for stories to be shared, and communities to connect. Many of those stories are highlighted throughout this report. As the conversation space is changing, the ABC is a place where Australians are able to join in and be a part of that change.
