The 2-year effort reviewed the challenges our community faces now and in the future, identified practical solutions, and developed a roadmap to protect the health, economic vitality, and environment of our city. The recommendations in this Facility Plan are the result of careful evaluation by the Facility Plan Team, which includes some of the most experienced engineers in Louisville Metro. We believe that the recommendations presented in this Facility Plan are essential to maintaining reliable facilities that will allow MSD to fulfill its responsibility for safe, clean waterways and help preserve and promote our competitiveness as a city. One driver that led to Facility Plan development was a recognition that—for the past 10 years—MSD has focused much of its resources and investments on tackling the federally mandated undertaking to reduce sewer overflows. -

Sponsored and supported by the Institute for Water Resources through its Responses to Climate Change program, this report encapsulates the research of numerous professionals in climatology, meteorology, biology, ecology, geology, hydrology, geographic information technology, engineering, water resources planning, economics, and landscape architecture. The report provides downscaled climate modeling information for the entire basin with forecasts of future precipitation and temperature changes as well as forecasts of future streamflow at numerous gaging points throughout the basin. These forecasts are presented at the Hydrologic Unit Code-4 sub-basin level through three 30-year time periods between 2011 and 2099. The report includes the results of preliminary investigations into the various impacts that forecasted climate changes may have on both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and operating water resources infrastructure. -

Peters, Secretary FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lanny Brannock 502-564-2150 Harmful Algal Bloom recreational advisory issued for the Ohio River and tributaries Advisory area stretches from W. Va. Line to Cannelton Locks and Dam FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 18, 2015) – The Kentucky Division of Water (KDOW) and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) are re-issuing a harmful algal bloom (HAB) recreational advisory for the Ohio River and tributaries, extending the advisory downstream from the West Virginia state line to the Cannelton Locks and Dam located at Cannelton, in Hancock County, Kentucky. KDOW and Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) personnel observed favorable water conditions for HAB development and made visual confirmation of HABs in the McAlpine pool at Louisville, Carrollton and Madison, Indiana. In addition, KDOW staff observed HABs in the Cannelton pool at West Point. Preliminary analysis indicates that microcystin toxins are occurring in these pools above advisory thresholds, which warrants that the advisory to be extended downstream. Water swallowed during recreational activities in this body of water may increase the risk of gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Skin, eye and throat irritation and/or breathing difficulties may also occur after contact. On Aug. 31, KDOW received a report of an algal bloom on the Ohio River near Greenup. Subsequent sampling of the river indicated higher levels of microcystin toxins existed in some areas of the Ohio River from Ashland to the Meldahl Dam. KDOW issued a recreational advisory on Sept. -

Navigation dams on rivers can add a large amount of atmospheric gases to the water due to the high velocities and the turbulence generated as the water passes through these structures. The increase in air~water gas transfer is due to air entrainment and the formation of bubbles in the flow. Hence, gas transfer at hydraulic structures plays an important role in the water quality of a river~reservoir system. Measurement of air~water gas transfer at hydraulic structures is a complicated process. -

Louisville Historical League OHIO RIVER ISLANDS BY CHUCK PARRISH, HISTORIAN (RET) ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS LOUISVILLE DISTRICT Among over 80 Islands in the 981 mile flow of the Ohio River, there are eight of interest and historical significance in the Louisville area, including one no longer extant. Corn Island is perhaps the one with the most historical notoriety, and whose remains lie far beneath the waters formed by McAlpine Dam. It was located near the Kentucky bank out from the end of present day Twelfth Street. Originally dubbed Dunmore’s Island (for the Royal Governor of Virginia) by Thomas Bullitt’s surveying party in 1773, it was on this small island that George Rogers Clark camped with the soldiers he led on their way to engage the British and Indi- ans in the Northwest campaigns of the Revolutionary War. Presumably, the name is derived from the first crop of corn grown there in 1778. Stone quarrying and navigation improvement projects by the Corps of Engineers in the mid-late nineteenth century had removed nearly all of the island by the early 1900s. Likely the last photographs of the river that show Corn Island are those among the collections of The Filson Historical Society, dating ca.
