THE WORD OF GOD Voluntary Beautiful Savior David Johnson

The Welcome

Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ is risen. People: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

The Gloria sung by the choir

The Collect of the Day

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconcilia- tion: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect for Transition

Almighty God, you have called us, as you called those who came before us, into lively and holy minis- try in this Cathedral parish, to be your light in this corner of the world: in this time of change, send, we pray, your Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us, to help us discover who we are, and what we may be- come; as we prepare for a new shepherd of your flock, a minister in your house, grant us patience, dis- cernment, and grace in all our uncertainties, and bless our search for one to lead us as the church you call us to be, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lessons

Reader: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 4:32-35 Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

Psalm 133 sung by choir

Oh, how good and pleasant it is, when brethren live together in unity! It is like fine oil upon the head that runs down upon the beard, Upon the beard of Aaron, and runs down upon the collar of his robe. It is like the dew of Hermon that falls upon the hills of Zion. For there the LORD has ordained the blessing: life for evermore.

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

Gospel: John 20:19-31

When it was evening of the day of Resurrection, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you for- give the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his dis- ciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

Sermon

The Prayers of the People

Rejoicing in the mighty acts of God who has delivered his people from sin and death through the Resurrec- tion of Jesus Christ in whom light triumphs over darkness and hope triumphs over despair. Let us lift our voices and pray.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer Let us pray for the Church, that it may carry forward the redemptive work of God—healing, feeding, shel- tering and caring for one another. We pray especially for Michael, Presiding Bishop; Brian, our Bishop; the clergy, staff, and the many lay people who serve this cathedral parish .

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer Let us pray for the Nations and Peoples of the World. We pray especially for our President; our Governor, our Mayor and all those who hold authority throughout the world, that the powers that oppress and destroy may decline, and justice, peace and prosperity be lifted up for all people.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer

Let us pray for those who are sick, those who suffer, and those who struggle that the hope born of Easter give them peace, acceptance and renewal. And through their struggles may they come into closer communion with God who redeems and restores.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer Let us pray for all those who have died, especially from the Coronavirus. Let rest eternal be given to them and may they live forever in the hearts of their families.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer Let us give thanks to God for the multitude of blessings he showers upon us: For our lives and for those whom we love; For our friendships; and for our Cathedral home.

Risen Lord, Hear our Prayer

Invitation, Confession and Absolution Deacon: Let us confess our sins against God, our neighbor and ourselves.

Silence is kept for reflection and meditation.

Deacon and People: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we hum- bly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may de- light in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins, through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit , keep you in in eternal Life. Amen

The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sac- rificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

The Lord’s Prayer

Prayer for Spiritual Communion from Julian of Norwich

In union, O Lord, with your faithful at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now be- ing celebrated, We desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. We remember your death, Lord Christ; We proclaim your resurrection; We await your coming in glory. Since We cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, We beseech you to come spiritually into our hearts. Cleanse and strengthen us with your grace, and let us never be separated from you. May we live in you, and you in us, in this life and in the life to come. Amen

the following Sunday.

The first reading is

from the Acts of the Apostles, sharing

with us the life of the early Church.

Each Sunday of the Great Fifty Days is a time to explore the life we share in Jesus’ dying and rising, a life begun at our Baptism and renewed during Holy Eucharist
