The questions of the thesis are a) Which stereotypes emerge when discussing racial preference with white Norwegian women? b) How are these stereotypes explained by the participants? c) To what degree is personal preference seen as something deeply individual and unique or affected by external factors? Bonilla- Silva’s “4 frames of colorblind racism” is used as theoretical framework in order to further understand the participants narratives and how they reason their stereotypes and preference. The thesis presents and deliberates the interviewees applying the “4 frames” and with previous research in mind. This thesis concludes that two examples of common cultural stereotypes from the literature was observed in the interviews: the sexualization of the black man and the undesirability of the Asian man. Furthermore, some features of the frame of “naturalization” was noted in the reasoning of why the participants found Asian men in general to be unattractive.

    Abstract of the Thesis The Early Women’s Emancipation Movement: Formation of a New Female Identity in the Russian and Late-Victorian Novel by Elena V. Shabliy Thesis Director: Professor Raymond C. Taras Women's emancipation altered the course of Victorian and Russian literature by challenging the literary conventions that governed the portrayal of women and women's experience at the fin de siècle. Emancipationist writing either explicitly advocated social change or embodied a feminist impulse in their treatment of particular themes and questions. The second half of the nineteenth century was marked by the emergence of the women’s movement; this focused primarily on women’s social and moral emancipation. In the 1830s and 1850s, in the German Federation of States, Denmark, England, France, Poland, Russia, and Spain women began to mobilize under the influence of emancipationist novels, discussing the role of women and shifting gender relations. This dissertation The Early Women’s Emancipation Movement: The Formation of a New Female Identity in the Russian and Late-Victorian Novel is comprised of two parts. The first part focuses on the women’s liberation movement in Russia and literary responses to the social change. The second part is dedicated to the women’s movement in Victorian England and its feminist literary discourse. Relatively little research exists on the Russian women’s movement in the nineteenth century, while there is a vast scholarship on the early women’s movement in England.     Art and Power in the Reign of Catherine the Great: The State Portraits Erin McBurney Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Erin McBurney !All rights reserved ABSTRACT Art and Power in the Reign of Catherine the Great: The State Portraits Erin McBurney This dissertation examines the relationship between art and power in the reign of Catherine II of Russia (1762-1796). It considers Catherine’s state portraits as historical texts that revealed symbolic manifestations of autocratic power, underscoring the close relationship between aesthetics and politics during the reign of Russia’s longest serving female ruler. The Russian empress actively exploited the portrait medium in order to transcend the limitations of her gender, assert legitimacy and display herself as an exemplar of absolute monarchy. The resulting symbolic representation was protean and adaptive, and it provided Catherine with a means to negotiate the anomaly of female rule and the ambiguity of her Petrine inheritance. In the reign of Catherine the Great, the state portraits functioned as an alternate form of political discourse.     ABSTRACT DAUGHTER OF ODORO: GRACE ONYANGO AND AFRICAN WOMEN’S HISTORY by Phoebe Musandu Since the eighties, the Academy has produced a modest amount of scholarship on African women’s history. A number of these works at have been limited demographically to allow for in- depth culture-specific analysis. They trace the various spaces in which women exercised power and authority, the various ways in which that agency was confronted by colonial-era challenges and how women struggled to adapt to those challenges with varying levels of success. However, works of African women’s history produced thus far are limited in ethno-geographic scope and even within those ethnic groups and geographical areas they have touched, there are more issues requiring historical research. This project is thus a contribution to the process of recovering women’s history in what is today Kenya. It will engage historical and ethno- historical data to demonstrate Kenyan female socio-economic and political agency, with a focus on the latter and with greater emphasis on Luo women. The dissertation posits, however, a diachronic rupture in the dominant meaning of queer between these two periods. Whereas the former exhibited a capacious vision of gender and sexuality, one that pushed the imagined frontiers of the human body, the post-socialist decades marked a retreat to a static notion of mythic tradition that pathologized and purged queer bodies through recourse to a late nineteenth- century European discourse of gender-inversion, the notion of a man ―trapped‖ in a women‘s body or vice versa. To demonstrate this change, the first chapter argues that the normative meaning of gender and sexuality in late colonial Vietnam was far more dynamic and expansive than the contemporary scholarship has acknowledged.
