East Asian Languages & Civilizations News and Updates From Academic Year 2017 - 2018 From the Chair Friends and Colleagues: In This Issue We are so happy to be sending the inaugural newsletter of the Department of East Asian Language and Civilizations. As the more than 3 Faculty Profiles seventy faculty and alumni who were at the EALC lunch during the annual meeting of the Association of Asian Studies in Washington, D.C., now know, 10 Faculty Bookshelf we are a very different department from the one many of you remember. 12 Associated Faculty In 2002, eight faculty members boldly and ambitiously became Penn’s first Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. We are a small 15 Student Prizes department with a huge vision: we seek to offer undergraduates the stongest, most diverse, and most rigorous education available in the East Asian 16 Chinese Language Program Humanities in North America; we seek to train Ph. D. students who become 18 Japanese Language Program the intellectual leaders in the East Asian Humanities in future generations; and we have crafted a vibrant masters program in which students with career 20 Korean Language Program ambitions from entry into Ph. A decade later, however, the global village still faces the continued reality of suffering, whether it is the slaughter of innocents in politically volatile regions, the ongoing economic crisis that currently roils the world financial system, or repeated natural disasters. Buddhism has always taught that the world is inherently unstable and its teachings are rooted in the perception of the three marks that govern all conditioned existence: impermanence, suffering, and non-self. Indeed, the veracity of the Buddhist worldview continues to be borne out by our collective experience today. -

1 FREEDOM OF RELIGION Regulatory and Policy Framework for Religion During the Commission’s 2015 reporting year, the Chinese gov- ernment and Communist Party continued to restrict freedom of re- ligion in China. China’s Constitution guarantees ‘‘freedom of reli- gious belief’’ 1 but limits protection of religious activities to ‘‘normal religious activities.’’ 2 This narrow protection contravenes inter- national human rights standards. Article 18 of the Universal Dec- laration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Article 18 of the Inter- national Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)—the lat- ter of which China has signed 3 and stated its intent to ratify 4— recognize not only an individual’s right to adopt a religion or belief, but also the freedom to manifest one’s religion in ‘‘worship, observ- ance, practice and teaching.’’ 5 The Chinese government continued to recognize only five reli- gions: Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, Protestantism, and Taoism. The 2005 Regulations on Religious Affairs (RRA) require groups wishing to practice these religions to register with the government and subject such groups to government controls.6 The government and Party control religious affairs mainly through the State Ad- ministration for Religious Affairs (SARA) and lower level religious affairs bureaus under the State Council,7 the Party Central Com- mittee United Front Work Department (UFWD),8 and the five ‘‘pa- triotic’’ religious associations—the Buddhist Association of China (BAC), the Catholic Patriotic Association of China (CPA), the Is- lamic -

Power, identity and antiquarian approaches in modern Chinese art Chia-Ling Yang Within China, nationalistic sentiments notably inhibit objective analysis of Sino- Japanese and Sino-Western cultural exchanges during the end of the Qing dynasty and throughout the Republican period: the fact that China was occupied by external and internal powers, including foreign countries and Chinese warlords, ensured that China at this time was not governed or united by one political body. The contemporary concept of ‘China’ as ‘one nation’ has been subject to debate, and as such, it is also difficult to define what the term ‘Chinese painting’ means.1 The term, guohua 國畫 or maobihua 毛筆畫 (brush painting) has traditionally been translated as ‘Chinese national painting’. 2 While investigating the formation of the concept of guohua, one might question what guo 國 actually means in the context of guohua. It could refer to ‘Nationalist painting’ as in the Nationalist Party, Guomindang 國民黨, which was in power in early 20th century China. It could also be translated as ‘Republican painting’, named after minguo 民國 (Republic of China). These political sentiments had a direct impact on guoxue 國學 (National Learning) and guocui 國粹 (National Essence), textual evidence and antiquarian studies on the development of Chinese history and art history. With great concern over the direction that modern Chinese painting should take, many prolific artists and intellectuals sought inspiration from jinshixue 金石學 (metal and stone studies/epigraphy) as a way to revitalise the Chinese -

All enquiries to: [email protected] Bodhisattva Precepts in the Ming Society: Factors behind their Success and Propagation William Chu University of California, Los Angeles Email: [email protected] Abstract The wide popularization of versions of Bodhisattva precepts that were based on apocrypha coincided with certain medieval developments in technology and social/political developments. All these changes facilitated a much more pervasive “Confucianization” of Chinese society, notably during the Song dynasty (960-1279), and were accentuated in the Ming (1368-1643). Riding on these trends, it was only natural that the apocryphal Bodhisattva precepts that were so much tailored to Confucian ethical norms found a much greater popular basis at the same time. This paper also takes a cultural comparativist perspective and analyzes the propagation of the same apocryphal precepts in Japan, which could also be explained by comparable conditions in political and technological infrastructure. Apocryphal scriptures played a crucial role in transforming and redefin- ing Buddhism for its Chinese recipients. The attempts to acclimatize Bud- dhism to the new environment by means of composing and promoting indigenous texts were not just about doctrinal reconfiguration; they were also carried out in earnest to rewrite moral injunctions that would govern both Buddhist individual and institutional life. -

1111 2 3 4 5111 LINGUISTIC STRATEGIES IN 6 7 DAOIST ZHUANGZI AND 8 CHAN BUDDHISM 9 10 11 2 3111 As the first systematic attempt to probe the linguistic strategies of 4 Daoist Zhuangzi and Chan Buddhism, this book investigates three 5 areas: deconstructive strategy, liminology of language, and indirect 6 communication. It bases these investigations on the critical examin- 7 ation of original texts, placing them strictly within soteriological 8 contexts. 9 While focusing on language use, the study also reveals some import- 20111 ant truths about the two traditions, and challenges many conven- 1 tional understandings of them. Responding to recent critiques of 2 Daoist and Chan Buddhist thought, it brings these traditions into 3 a constructive dialogue with contemporary philosophical reflection. 4 It “discovers” Zhuangzian and Chan perspectives and sheds light 5 on issues such as the relationship between philosophy and non- 6 philosophy, de-reification of words, relativizing of the limit of 7 language, structure of indirect communication, and use of double 8 negation, paradox, tautology, irony, and poetic language. 9 30111 Youru Wang teaches Asian thought in the Philosophy and Religion 1 Department at Rowan University, Glassboro, New Jersey. The Destruction of Immoral Temples in Qing China* Vincent Goossaert China, like other pre-modern East Asian countries, was characterized by a pluralistic reli- gious system. Although the Qing Imperial state (1644–1911) recognized this system by granting freedom of practice to a wide range of distinct religious traditions, it was not, for all that matter, tolerant. What was not included within the corpus of officially recognized practices was the object of repression in its various forms. This repression generally remained only a threat, but in some cases the threat was carried out and the reasons and ways in which it was carried out were generally complex and numerous. This article proposes to examine repressive acts as not being necessarily self-evident, as a way of understanding the logic and workings of a state apparatus in its dealings with the religious domain, a particularly difficult area to control. -
