Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

As the more than 3 Faculty Profiles seventy faculty and alumni who were at the EALC lunch during the annual meeting of the Association of Asian Studies in Washington, D.C., now know, 10 Faculty Bookshelf we are a very different department from the one many of you remember. 12 Associated Faculty In 2002, eight faculty members boldly and ambitiously became Penn’s first Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. We are a small 15 Student Prizes department with a huge vision: we seek to offer undergraduates the stongest, most diverse, and most rigorous education available in the East Asian 16 Chinese Language Program Humanities in North America; we seek to train Ph. D. students who become 18 Japanese Language Program the intellectual leaders in the East Asian Humanities in future generations; and we have crafted a vibrant masters program in which students with career 20 Korean Language Program ambitions from entry into Ph. D. programs to employment in the public or private sector, government service, and education are poised to accomplish 22 Van Pelt Library those goals. 24 Graduate Student Highlights Striving to prepare students for careers that span this century, we have reconfigured ourselves in four streams: China, Korea, Japan, and Inner 26 Body and Cosmos Asia. A decade later, however, the global village still faces the continued reality of suffering, whether it is the slaughter of innocents in politically volatile regions, the ongoing economic crisis that currently roils the world financial system, or repeated natural disasters. Buddhism has always taught that the world is inherently unstable and its teachings are rooted in the perception of the three marks that govern all conditioned existence: impermanence, suffering, and non-self. Indeed, the veracity of the Buddhist worldview continues to be borne out by our collective experience today. -

Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Kevin Buckelew All rights reserved Abstract Inventing Chinese Buddhas: Identity, Authority, and Liberation in Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism Kevin Buckelew This dissertation explores how Chan Buddhists made the unprecedented claim to a level of religious authority on par with the historical Buddha Śākyamuni and, in the process, invented what it means to be a buddha in China. This claim helped propel the Chan tradition to dominance of elite monastic Buddhism during the Song dynasty (960–1279), licensed an outpouring of Chan literature treated as equivalent to scripture, and changed the way Chinese Buddhists understood their own capacity for religious authority in relation to the historical Buddha and the Indian homeland of Buddhism. But the claim itself was fraught with complication. After all, according to canonical Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha was easily recognizable by the “marks of the great man” that adorned his body, while the same could not be said for Chan masters in the Song. What, then, distinguished Chan masters from everyone else? What authorized their elite status and granted them the authority of buddhas? According to what normative ideals did Chan aspirants pursue liberation, and by what standards did Chan masters evaluate their students to determine who was worthy of admission into an elite Chan lineage? How, in short, could one recognize a buddha in Song-dynasty China? The Chan tradition never answered this question once and for all; instead, the question broadly animated Chan rituals, institutional norms, literary practices, and visual cultures. -

A Pliable Life: Facts and Fiction about the Figure of the Chinese Meditation Master Wolun* Carmen Meinert (Hamburg) I Object of Research The Chinese meditation master Tanlun – better known to posterity by his nickname Wolun – passed away in 626 AD at the age of over eighty years in Zhuangyan monastery in Chang’an, officially leaving behind one lay student and no work that was included in the Buddhist canon. Judging from the scarce biographical material available, Wolun is under no account representa- tive of the whole, rather heterogeneous movement of early Meditation Buddhism in China. Instead he must even be regarded as an isolated case that after his decease has seemingly left little to no impact to the immediate Meditation Buddhist movement in China proper. None- theless, a number of Chinese and Tibetan Dunhuang manuscripts and autochthon Tibetan texts witness Wolun’s posthumous fame. Those materials prove that a meditation practice connected to a certain Wolun belong properly within a regional current of Chinese Meditation Buddhism, known as Cig car ba (sudden teaching), prevailing in Dunhuang and Tibet from the 8th and 9th centuries.1 Then, it seems that the knowledge of the supposedly forgotten 6th cen- tury meditation master Wolun travelled back to China via Dunhuang. Wolun is mentioned once more in the 9th century by Zongmi (780–841) in the preface to his doxographical treatise on Meditation Buddhist Schools, in the Chanyuan zhuquan ji duxu. Very much in the tradition of his own teacher Shenhui (684–758) Zongmi’s material is presented with an underlying doc- trinal agenda, to reinforce the classification of sudden and gradual teachings and to show the superiority of the former to the latter. -

Revista de Antropología y Filosofía de lo Sagrado Review of Anthropology and Philosophy of the Sacrum ISSN: 2530-1233 Nº 2, diciembre (2017) pp.: 67-79 SACRED PLACES IN BUDDHISM OR THE PLACE OF THE SACRED IN BUDDHISM LOS LUGARES SAGRADOS EN EL BUDISMO O EL LUGAR DE LO SAGRADO EN EL BUDISMO Antoaneta Nikolova1 The South-West University (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria) Abstract: The paper aims to examine the meaning of sacredness in such a religion as Buddhism where there is no idea of God or any supernatural being. Instead, there are elaborated inner practices for achieving enlightenment. The paper consists of two parts. The first one analyses the place of the sacred in Buddhism considering the two important concepts of samsara and nirvana. The second part discusses sacred places in Buddhism comparing two different space structures: stupa as representative for a vertical structure and mandala for a horizontal one. On the base of juxtaposing these seemingly opposite concepts and structures the paper reveals that in terms of Bud- dhism the real sacredness is non-sacredness: a term that transcends the opposition sacred-profane and expresses the specific Buddhist vision of non-duality. Resumen: Este artículo tiene el propósito de examinar el significado de lo sagrado en una religión como el Budismo, donde no hay una idea de Dios como tal o ningún ser sobrenatural.
