  • Baseball and Beesuboru
AMERICAN BASEBALL IMPERIALISM, CLASHING NATIONAL CULTURES, AND THE FUTURE OF SAMURAI BESUBORU PETER C. BJARKMAN El béisbol is the Monroe Doctrine turned into a lineup card, a remembrance of past invasions. – John Krich from El Béisbol: Travels Through the Pan-American Pastime (1989) When baseball (the spectacle) is seen restrictively as American baseball, and then when American baseball is seen narrowly as Major League Baseball (MLB), two disparate views will tend to appear. In one case, fans happily accept league expansion, soaring attendance figures, even exciting home run races as evidence that all is well in this best of all possible baseball worlds. In the other case, the same evidence can be seen as mirroring the desperate last flailing of a dying institution – or at least one on the edge of losing any recognizable character as the great American national pastime. Big league baseball’s modern-era television spectacle – featuring overpaid celebrity athletes, rock-concert stadium atmosphere, and the recent plague of steroid abuse – has labored at attracting a new free-spending generation of fans enticed more by notoriety than aesthetics, and consequently it has also succeeded in driving out older generations of devotees once attracted by the sport’s unique pastoral simplicities. Anyone assessing the business health and pop-culture status of the North American version of professional baseball must pay careful attention to the fact that better than forty percent of today’s big league rosters are now filled with athletes who claim their birthright as well as their baseball training or heritage outside of the United States.

Sports News Roundup May 25 Hemingway's Grandsons Statements The two grandsons of US writer Ernest Hemingway, John and Patrick, said in Havana that they are happy with the new stage of relations between Cuba and their country. John and Patrick arrived here boarding a yacht along other US citizens to participate at the 65th International Bill-fishing Tournament named after their grandfather, which begins today, May 25th, and will run until Saturday, the 30th. John said that the announcement by President Barack Obama to work for the normalization of relations with Cuba came as a big surprise. John and his brother had to apply for special permit from the Department of the Treasury to visit the Island due to the travel restrictions imposed by Washington on Cuba. John Patrick, a writer, and Patrick Edward, a photographer, are the children of Gregory Hemingway and grandchildren of Pauline Pfeiffer, 2nd of 4 wives of the US writer. Cuba-USA Joined in Wrestling A team of wrestlers from Cuba recently wrestled a team of wrestlers from America in the most American, least Cuban place America has to offer: Times Square. The Cubans were there for a pretty good reason. This is the annual blowout of Beat The Streets NY, a charity providing wrestling resources to New York youth. Each year, the organization hosts a wrestling exhibition in a notable New York location. Last year, it raised $1.5 million in a match up between the U.S. national team and "World All-Stars." In 2013, the Americans wrestled Iranians and Russians in Grand Central Station.

30 TABLE OF CONTENTS THE GIRLS WHO PLAY BASEBALL IN THE LAST FRONTIER In Alaska, Nadia Chernich, Anya Chernich and Athena Clendaniel are carving their own path, no matter what obstacles get in their way. BY BRITNI de la CRETAZ 31 The list of professional baseball players who have come out of Alaska is short. Of the 12 Alaskans in Major League Baseball history, 10 of them have been from Anchorage, the Last Frontier’s largest city. And of course, none of them have been women. You don’t need to remind Nadia and Anya Chernich of the challeng- es they face playing baseball in Fairbanks, Alaska. Nadia is built to play baseball. hes fast — a top-fight sprinter — and muscular. ost of the time, you can fnd the -year-old behind the plate, though she also plays center feld. he is a student of the game, which makes her an ef- fective catcher, a position where she must know what is happening on the feld at all times. Nadia was the only girl playing baseball in her community, which is not a unique situation for young women in the sport. Nor was it unique for the boys to give her a hard time for doing something they thought girls shouldn’t do. But she couldn’t have known any of that then, far away 32 from anyone else who had experienced what Nadia was going through at that moment.

  • The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club February 2021
The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ February 2021 By Dave Badertscher The 400 Fan Club was able to keep its consecutive Gameboree streak alive by hosting the 55th annual gala as a free virtual event on Zoom on Wednesday evening, January 20. This year’s theme was appropriately “2020: A Season Like No Other.” Due to COVID considerations our traditional cocktail reception, silent auction, raffle, and dinner were not offered. Food and beverages were on you own at home. Approximately 80 attendees and special guests participated in the session. After this enthusiastic, 90-minute celebration of Braves baseball, we could definitely lay claim to hosting the best virtual Eddie Glennon Gameboree ever. Emcee Wayne Coleman opened the Gameboree by introducing the evening’s producer, Harlow Lisak, and Fan Club President Howard Evans. Howard welcomed the attendees and talked about the work of the Club’s Board of Directors, much of which had to be done virtually in 2020. The Board is planning activities for 2021, which will include more monthly Zoom meetings, pre-game socials at Truist Park, a Major League trip to Denver during Labor Day Weekend and, pandemic permitting, minor league trips to Gwinnett and Rome and hopefully to the Braves new affiliate, the Augusta Green Jackets. For more details on the Club’s activities and the evening’s agenda, Howard referred folks to the Deluxe Gameboree Souvenir Program, which can be accessed by clicking here. Before starting the program, Wayne began with remembrances for the loss of two of the Fan Club’s biggest supporters—Bill Bartholomay on March 25, Phil Niekro on December 26—as well as Braves trainer Dave Pursley on October 21 and announcer Don Sutton, who passed away the day before the Gameboree.

  • Healthy Attendance for a Vintage Year!
News Release For immediate distribution Re-cap of the 27th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal: Healthy attendance for a vintage year! Montreal, Monday, July 10th, 2006 – If the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal was particularly successful this year, it’s almost entirely due to the extraordinary mix of artistry that marked this 27th edition of the event. Not that we haven’t come to expect surprises, but this year was a true feast for the ears and eyes. Featuring a whole lot of new blood and an astonishing variety of hybrid genres, this year 30 countries were represented at the Festival—a record number—including Italy (with Suono Italia), featured country of the Festival, which we welcomed as we would an old friend. Special honours at this year’s event were also given to the State of Louisiana, the birthplace of jazz and scene of last year’s natural disaster. As the public has grown to expect, it wasn’t just jazz but its many musical relatives that were heard throughout the site. Even the series devoted to the good ol’ blues took on a new vitality. So maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that this year’s Festival enjoyed record-breaking ticket sales, with a full 50 of the 150 indoor shows completely sold out. The beautiful exterior site was better arranged than ever, and the exterior program of about 350 free shows registered a healthy attendance of at least 2 million visits, once again demonstrating Montrealers’ diverse musical interests. Even though storm clouds darkened the first few days of the event, Mother Nature herself finally surrendered to the crowds’ enthusiasm at the second Grand événement.
