Sports News Roundup May 25 Sports News Roundup May 25 Hemingway's Grandsons Statements The two grandsons of US writer Ernest Hemingway, John and Patrick, said in Havana that they are happy with the new stage of relations between Cuba and their country. John and Patrick arrived here boarding a yacht along other US citizens to participate at the 65th International Bill-fishing Tournament named after their grandfather, which begins today, May 25th, and will run until Saturday, the 30th. John said that the announcement by President Barack Obama to work for the normalization of relations with Cuba came as a big surprise. John and his brother had to apply for special permit from the Department of the Treasury to visit the Island due to the travel restrictions imposed by Washington on Cuba. John Patrick, a writer, and Patrick Edward, a photographer, are the children of Gregory Hemingway and grandchildren of Pauline Pfeiffer, 2nd of 4 wives of the US writer. Cuba-USA Joined in Wrestling A team of wrestlers from Cuba recently wrestled a team of wrestlers from America in the most American, least Cuban place America has to offer: Times Square. The Cubans were there for a pretty good reason. This is the annual blowout of Beat The Streets NY, a charity providing wrestling resources to New York youth. Each year, the organization hosts a wrestling exhibition in a notable New York location. Last year, it raised $1.5 million in a match up between the U.S. national team and "World All-Stars." In 2013, the Americans wrestled Iranians and Russians in Grand Central Station. In 2010, matches were held on the deck of the USS Intrepid. The organization needed an "other" to stand in so wrestling fans can get to see America's best face off against somebody else's best. Cuba was a nice fit though gets most of its medals from fighting sports instead-- at the London Olympics in 2012, 10 of Cuba's 14 medals came from boxing, judo, wrestling and taekwondo. And of course, Cuba and the United States are working to re-establish diplomatic relations. And there's no better way to be friends than through sports! Now that travel restrictions are easier between our countries --a Cuban team official reports the visa process only took a day-- the Cuban team happily made the trip to help out children on the streets of New York City. • Baseball and Beesuboru
AMERICAN BASEBALL IMPERIALISM, CLASHING NATIONAL CULTURES, AND THE FUTURE OF SAMURAI BESUBORU PETER C. BJARKMAN El béisbol is the Monroe Doctrine turned into a lineup card, a remembrance of past invasions. – John Krich from El Béisbol: Travels Through the Pan-American Pastime (1989) When baseball (the spectacle) is seen restrictively as American baseball, and then when American baseball is seen narrowly as Major League Baseball (MLB), two disparate views will tend to appear. In one case, fans happily accept league expansion, soaring attendance figures, even exciting home run races as evidence that all is well in this best of all possible baseball worlds. In the other case, the same evidence can be seen as mirroring the desperate last flailing of a dying institution – or at least one on the edge of losing any recognizable character as the great American national pastime. Big league baseball’s modern-era television spectacle – featuring overpaid celebrity athletes, rock-concert stadium atmosphere, and the recent plague of steroid abuse – has labored at attracting a new free-spending generation of fans enticed more by notoriety than aesthetics, and consequently it has also succeeded in driving out older generations of devotees once attracted by the sport’s unique pastoral simplicities. Anyone assessing the business health and pop-culture status of the North American version of professional baseball must pay careful attention to the fact that better than forty percent of today’s big league rosters are now filled with athletes who claim their birthright as well as their baseball training or heritage outside of the United States.

30 TABLE OF CONTENTS THE GIRLS WHO PLAY BASEBALL IN THE LAST FRONTIER In Alaska, Nadia Chernich, Anya Chernich and Athena Clendaniel are carving their own path, no matter what obstacles get in their way. BY BRITNI de la CRETAZ 31 The list of professional baseball players who have come out of Alaska is short. Of the 12 Alaskans in Major League Baseball history, 10 of them have been from Anchorage, the Last Frontier’s largest city. And of course, none of them have been women. You don’t need to remind Nadia and Anya Chernich of the challeng- es they face playing baseball in Fairbanks, Alaska. Nadia is built to play baseball. hes fast — a top-fight sprinter — and muscular. ost of the time, you can fnd the -year-old behind the plate, though she also plays center feld. he is a student of the game, which makes her an ef- fective catcher, a position where she must know what is happening on the feld at all times. Nadia has also pitched, but it has been a fraught experience at times. “There is a whole bunch of horrible toxic masculinity up here,” she says. hat played out the frst time she ever took the mound, when she was years old. Nadia was the only girl playing baseball in her community, which is not a unique situation for young women in the sport. Nor was it unique for the boys to give her a hard time for doing something they thought girls shouldn’t do. But she couldn’t have known any of that then, far away 32 from anyone else who had experienced what Nadia was going through at that moment.

  • The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club February 2021
The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ February 2021 By Dave Badertscher The 400 Fan Club was able to keep its consecutive Gameboree streak alive by hosting the 55th annual gala as a free virtual event on Zoom on Wednesday evening, January 20. This year’s theme was appropriately “2020: A Season Like No Other.” Due to COVID considerations our traditional cocktail reception, silent auction, raffle, and dinner were not offered. Food and beverages were on you own at home. Approximately 80 attendees and special guests participated in the session. After this enthusiastic, 90-minute celebration of Braves baseball, we could definitely lay claim to hosting the best virtual Eddie Glennon Gameboree ever. Emcee Wayne Coleman opened the Gameboree by introducing the evening’s producer, Harlow Lisak, and Fan Club President Howard Evans. Howard welcomed the attendees and talked about the work of the Club’s Board of Directors, much of which had to be done virtually in 2020. The Board is planning activities for 2021, which will include more monthly Zoom meetings, pre-game socials at Truist Park, a Major League trip to Denver during Labor Day Weekend and, pandemic permitting, minor league trips to Gwinnett and Rome and hopefully to the Braves new affiliate, the Augusta Green Jackets. For more details on the Club’s activities and the evening’s agenda, Howard referred folks to the Deluxe Gameboree Souvenir Program, which can be accessed by clicking here. Before starting the program, Wayne began with remembrances for the loss of two of the Fan Club’s biggest supporters—Bill Bartholomay on March 25, Phil Niekro on December 26—as well as Braves trainer Dave Pursley on October 21 and announcer Don Sutton, who passed away the day before the Gameboree.

  • The Impact of the Flat World on Player Transfers in Major League Baseball
ROSNERFINAL_FOUR 1/22/2010 5:12:21 PM THE IMPACT OF THE FLAT WORLD ON PLAYER TRANSFERS IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL Scott R. Rosner* William T. Conroy** I. INTRODUCTION Globalization has indeed made the world “flat,” and the sports industry is no exception. Throughout the last two decades, American professional sports leagues have attempted with varying degrees of success to expand worldwide and create global product markets. The impact of this internationalization is apparent—from the success of the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009 to the exploding popularity that has led the National Basketball Association (“NBA”) to announce the creation of NBA China, a Chinese subsidiary league pairing Disney with other local partners.1 Perhaps the most significant of these effects is that the current player pool for most of the top American professional sports leagues is no longer purely domestic. This sea change is well underway, with international players comprising significant portions of current professional sports rosters across the sporting spectrum.2 Partly as a result of domestic * Lecturer, Legal Studies and Business Ethics Department, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. INTEGRATION OF NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICAN PLAYERS IN JAPAN’S PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUES By Akihiko Kawaura Sumner La Croix 1 30 October 2011 University of Hawaii Dept. of Economics Working Paper No. 11-14 JEL Codes: J71, L83, N35 Keywords: Baseball, Japan, integration, NPB, sports, team Abstract Teams in Japan’s two professional baseball leagues began to add foreign players to their rosters in the early 1950s, with the average number of foreign players per team reaching 5.79 in 2004. One reason for their increased use of foreign players was that foreign hitters substantially outperformed Japanese hitters. We show that the pace of team integration with African-American, Latino, and Caucasian players varied substantially across teams, a pattern also observed in North American professional baseball leagues. Using team data for the 1958-2004 seasons, econometric analysis shows that good teams that experienced a poor season played foreign players more frequently in the next season’s games. 1 Kawaura: Professor, Department of Policy Studies, Doshisha University, Kyoto, 602-8580 Japan ; tel +81(Japan)-75-251-3473, fax: +81(Japan)-75-251-3094; e-mail: [email protected] . • Kenichi Zenimura, Japanese American Baseball Pioneer
Kenichi Zenimura, Japanese American Baseball Pioneer Bill STAPLES, Jr. INTRODUCTION (After showing the opening sequence of the NHK Documentary on Zenimura) Hello, my name is Bill Staples. I am a baseball historian and author of the book, Kenichi Zenimura, Japanese American Baseball Pioneer. It is an honor to be here today to discuss the life and legacy of Zenimura-san. Before I start, I would like to thank the representatives from Ritsumeikan University for inviting me to Japan. Specifically, I want to thank Kyoko Yoshida, a fellow baseball historian who I have collaborated with on baseball research projects since 2006. Amazingly, this is our first time to meet in person. I would also like to thank the distinguished faculty of the International Institute of Language and Culture Studies and its staff members: Prof. Takahashi, Mr. Yasukawa, Ms. Shiga, and Mr. Shimizu. I would also like to thank the three panelists joining us today at our symposium: Mr. Ishihara, Mr. Takano, and Mr. Masaki. For me to tell you the story of Zenimura I first have to tell you a little about myself, as I feel our life stories are now intertwined. I fell in love with the game of baseball at age 10. I lived in Houston, Texas, at the time and the Astros were my favorite team. If you would have told me then that the Astros would win the World Series in 2017, and that I would travel to Japan to talk about baseball history several months later, I would not have believed you. My interest in Japanese culture began 30 years ago.

Kelly 6 Blood cu'\d ~ttts ii'\ 3apal'\ese Pt4-ofessiol'\al Baseball At first glance, baseball in Japan appears to be the same game played in the U.S.-but it isn't. The Japanese view oflife stressing group identity, cooperation, respect for age, seniority and "face" has permeated almost every aspect of the sport. Americans who come to play in Japan quickly realize that Baseball Samurai Style is different. For some it is fascinating and exciting; for others, exasperating, and occasionally devastating. (Whiting 1977:v) Pattel-41'15 of (Spod) C[;\lt[;\1'4e There is a widespread notion that sport is iconic of national charac ter-that the way we play a game, and the particular game we as a people choose to play, says a lot about who we are as a people. There are countless claims, in particular, that baseball embodies some thing centrally expressive about America, the single most famous imperative being that of Jacques Barzun (1954:159): ''Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn base ball." This chapter is a brief examination not so much of as beyond the notion that people at play can be seen as "a people" at play. The people in question are the Japanese as fans and players of profes sional baseball, and in highlighting two themes-ethnicity and 95 96 SPORTS spiritism-the chapter suggests the shape of my larger, ongoing research into the institutions and ideologies of baseball in Japan.
