The discipline was previously dominated by summary descriptions of single archaeological sites made by explorers. This gradually gave way to multi-year investigations of single sites, such as Uaxactún and Piedras Negras in Guatemala, Chichén Itzá in Yucatán, and later at Tikal in Guatemala, and at Copán in Honduras. Fieldwork, romantic thoughts aside, was a logistical concern quite different at the beginning of the twentieth century and considerably more complex than it is today. Biographical field accounts (Brunhouse 1971, 1975, 1976; Desmond and Messenger 1988; Givens 1992; Graham 2002, 2010; E. Lothrop 1948; S. Lothrop 1961; Shook 1990, 1998; Solomon 2002; J.E.S. Thompson 1963; Wauchope 1963; Willey 1989; Woodbury 1973) routinely describe the difficulties in planning, as well as implementing, major field programs.   • 1 Central Belize and the Development of Maya Archaeology: a Critical Assessment
    1 CENTRAL BELIZE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF MAYA ARCHAEOLOGY: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT Arlen F. Chase and Diane Z. Chase Maya archaeology has changed substantially since its inception - and the role of Belize, within the broader field of Maya Studies, has been transformed as well. Once considered a backwater for the Maya region, Belize has been at the cutting edge of Maya archaeology for some time. This paper first reviews the changes that have occurred in Maya archaeology over the last century, specifically focusing on the practice and goals of archaeology; it then positions archaeology in Belize relative to these transitions with a specific focus on research carried out in the central part of the county. Once the past-time of wealthy individuals interested in spectacular tombs, architecture, and artifacts, the field of Maya archaeology now includes a broader spectrum of practitioners and field research that includes a focus on domestic remains to answer more mundane and academically-oriented questions. Over the last 40 years, archaeology in the central part of Belize has also been responsible for providing the field of Maya Studies with significant data relevant to: (1) the earliest Maya, (2) both localized and regional politics during the Classic Period, and (3) the Postclassic Maya, including Spanish contact. Since the 1980s, research in Belize has truly been at the forefront of Maya archaeology, resulting in striking challenges to disciplinary dogma in Maya studies.     A TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM R. COE: AN INTRODUCTION by Robert Sharer and Christopher Jones A tribute to the late William R. Coe was held at the Penn Museum on April 9, 2010, attended by a number of Bill‘s colleagues and former students. People spoke of his professional achievements and their recollections of working with Bill during his career at Penn spanning almost 40 years. The attendees also told a number of stories about Bill. After this event several people suggested that these recollections and stories should be collected and recorded so that they could be more widely shared and preserved. Word went out by email to colleagues and former students to contribute their accounts and over the following weeks and months many people shared their recollections and stories about Bill.   • Inauguration Dates of Three Late Classic Rulers of Tikal, Guatemala
    INAUGURATION DATES OF THREE LATE CLASSIC RULERS OF TIKAL, GUATEMALA CHRISTOPHER JONES Three passages in the hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Maya city of Tikal in Guatemala indicate inaugurations to the throne of three rulers at A.D. 682, 734, and 768. The distribution of the rulers' name·glyphs in the inscriptions, as well as differences in the art and architecture of the time-periods thus marked, support the validity of the three inaugural dates. The parentage of the rulers and the likelihood that the three rulers were members of the same family is discussed. The author suggests that persomlity differences among the three rulers can be discerned. DURING THE LAST FEW YEARS, our understanding of Classic Maya society (approximately from A.D. 300 to A.D. 900) has been expanded through studies of historical data in the surviving hieroglyphic inscriptions. The life-spans and the reigns of rulers in Piedras Negras, Yaxchilan, Copan, Naranjo, Quirigua, Palenque, and smaller cities have been deduced from patterns of Maya dates in association with certain glyphs and scenes, even though the glyphs themselves have not necessarily been deciphered phonetically (Proskouriakoff 1960, 1963, 1964a, 1964b; Kelley 1962; Graham 1967; Berlin 1958, 1968a, 1968b; Barthel1968; Kubler 1969). In the inscriptions of Tika1, one of the largest and perhaps the most important of the ancient Maya cities, Proskouriakoff identifies only two historical statements in her original article: an inaugural date on Stela 4 and a birthday ("initial date") on Stela 23. Both dates are in the Early Classic and have only recently been connected to other historical information (Clemency Coggins, personal communication 1974).
