  • The Marine Protected Area of Portofino, Italy
Ocean & Coastal Management 44 (2001) 39–60 The marine protected area of Portofino, Italy: a difficult balance Paola Salmona*, Debora Verardi Facolta` di Architettura, University of Genova, Stradone S. Agostino 37, 16123 Genova, Italy Abstract The Portofino promontory extends for 13 km along the northwestern Italian coast. This peninsula has a rough coastline, steep seabed, and high indices of biodiversity, both in its terrestrial and marine ecosystems. In 1935, a terrestrial protected area was established, preventing the intense urban development and mass tourism that characterises nearby areas today. Presently, the economies of the small towns in the area are based on elite tourism and recreational boating. Based on an analysis of the uses of the area and their impacts on the coastal ecosystems, we suggest that the present activities significantly degrade the area’s environment. In 1998, the national government created a marine protected area surrounding the peninsula. Some local authorities and many stakeholders from the nearby communities opposed the designation, fearing a decrease in tourism and stricter control over recreational activities. Two potential alternatives exist for the area: (a) maintaining a traditional system with short-term economic benefits; or (b) choosing an innovative, environmentally sound system of management providing intermediate and long-term economic and environmental benefits. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. The Portofino promontory, located about 25 km east of Genoa, juts into the Ligurian Gulf and possesses 13 km of coastline along the Ligurian Sea. The peninsula is a hilly area that reaches a height of 610 m at the summit of Monte di Portofino.

We begin in the charming seaside town of Moneglia. Beautifully located in the heart of a bay on the Mediterranean sea, the picture-postcard town is listed since 2012 on the 'I Borghi Più Belli d'Italia' (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) and has been awarded the European Blue Flag every year since 1990, for its clear waters and the quality of the services offered. Day 2 Follow the coastal trail between Deiva Marina and the villages of Framura and Bonassola In the morning we take a short train to Deiva Marina and start our walk through holm oak forests and maquis shrubland. The walk begins with a relatively steep path, climbing up to picturesque woods of pine and strawberry trees. Our efforts will be rewarded at the top of the hill with stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Promontory of Portofino. We will then take an ondulating trail that offers beautiful views over the Ligurian Sea and leads to the village of Framura, where we stop for lunch. After the refreshments, we descend by steps almost to sea level then meander through woods until a final steep climb for magnificent views of the sea. We then head to the pretty village of Bonassola before taking the train back to our hotel in Moneglia.

System Sciences Reply to Marchi’s comment on “Geomorphic hazards and intense rainfall: the case study of the Recco Stream catchment (Eastern Liguria, Italy)” by Faccini et al. (2012) F. Faccini, A. Robbiano, and A. Sacchini University of Genoa, DiSTAV, Italy Correspondence to: F. Faccini ([email protected]) 1 Reply “Geomorphic hazard and intense rainfall: the case study of the Recco Stream Catchment (Eastern Liguria, Italy)” (Nat. Hazards Earth Syst. Sci., 12, 893–903, 2012) presented the impact of a heavy and short rainfall event in the Ligurian area (NW Mediterranean). It triggered several shallow land- slides and flooded a part of the Recco alluvial plain. In the last decades, such events are increasing in Liguria and in the Mediterranean. In the Recco Stream catchment, we analyzed the conditions of geomorphic hazard related to the recent in- tensification of heavy rainfalls. We demonstrated the inade- quacy of the Basin Master Plan for the slope environment. In fact, most of the instability phenomena were triggered in areas classified with medium and low geomorphic hazard. In the section “Information about the target event rainfall” the triggering weather condition was considered. The pre-frontal thunderstorm super cell caused heavy and short rainfalls con- centrated on a very narrow area. These phenomena occur particularly in the central area of Liguria, due to Alpine- Apenninic orography and the Ligurian Sea.

The Genoa rail corridor, in north-west of Italy, has a very complex track configuration and complex junction intersections, with a constrained capacity network shared by a large number passenger and freight trains. In the present study a new methodology to create a modular, periodical and symmetrical train scheduling for Genoa, Italy rail corridor is proposed. The objective is to answer the necessities for a modern and irregular mobility, typical for large metropolitan areas. The understanding of preferred methods of transportation, amounts of commodities shipped and types of commodities shipped can provide vision into the resiliency of the transportation system and project future sustainable infrastructure improvements necessary to create more reliable and efficient methods of transportation. Keywords: Railway, sustainable development, timetable, urban planning INTRODUCTION paper on optimization methods for train scheduling is conducted (Cordeau et al., 1998; Oh et al., 2004; In Europe, the rail networks have complex train Törnquist, 2005; Ahuja et al., 2005).
