Arrival: Genoa Airport / Sestri Levante Train Station D You will be met by your Tour Leader at Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo Airport between 12-12.30pm, or at the Sestri Levante train station between 2-2.30pm. A well-appointed private, air-conditioned vehicle will transfer you to the Hotel Genova in time to unwind either in your room, or on the nearby seashore. In the evening we head off for a welcome dinner/cooking class at a local cooking school located in an historic seaside building in the charming old part of Sestri Levante. Here we will enjoy preparing Liguria’s most famous dish – Pesto! You’ll have the opportunity to make the pasta and the pesto sauce from the best local ingredients available, whilst also enjoying a couple of glasses of local wine! Day Two – (A day in a seaside Paradise!) Cinque Terre B Today we spend a full day in the stunning Cinque Terre National Park. You are free to walk or utilise the train service at your leisure in this wonderful part of the world (our suggestion would also be to take a boat ride!). You will be accompanied to Monterosso al Mare in the morning to get your day started. Following this you have the time and flexibility to get the most out of your day and you can return to the Sestri Levante by train whenever you like later in The Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera and the the day. Camogli – Abbey of San Fruttuoso – Portofino - Leivi B | D We begin our fourth day in Camogli, a very popular town for Italian holiday makers during summer. It is also a place where one can enjoy a sumptuous slice of cheese focaccia, more commonly known as Focaccia di Recco (the name of a neighbouring town). We arrive early in the morning in time to take the ferry to the nearby location of the Abbey of San Fruttuoso. We spend the morning in this isolated and idyllic location, which is only reachable by boat or foot, before heading back to Camogli for an hour or so’s free time. At lunchtime we return to Sestri Levante to relax at our hotel and prepare for tonight’s provided farewell meal. Our dining location tonight is in the town of Leivi, high up in the hills above the Ligurian coastline. Day Five – Farewell Day) B Departur: Sestri Levante train station and Genoa Airport Today is the end of the tour, as we say farewell to our fellow guests and the beautiful Ligurian seaside. After breakfast guests will be taken to the Sestri Levante train station at 9am, and Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo Airport (arrival time approximately 11-11.30am). Agostino 37, 16123 Genova, Italy Abstract The Portofino promontory extends for 13 km along the northwestern Italian coast. This peninsula has a rough coastline, steep seabed, and high indices of biodiversity, both in its terrestrial and marine ecosystems. In 1935, a terrestrial protected area was established, preventing the intense urban development and mass tourism that characterises nearby areas today. Presently, the economies of the small towns in the area are based on elite tourism and recreational boating. Based on an analysis of the uses of the area and their impacts on the coastal ecosystems, we suggest that the present activities significantly degrade the area’s environment. In 1998, the national government created a marine protected area surrounding the peninsula. Some local authorities and many stakeholders from the nearby communities opposed the designation, fearing a decrease in tourism and stricter control over recreational activities. Two potential alternatives exist for the area: (a) maintaining a traditional system with short-term economic benefits; or (b) choosing an innovative, environmentally sound system of management providing intermediate and long-term economic and environmental benefits. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved. The Portofino promontory, located about 25 km east of Genoa, juts into the Ligurian Gulf and possesses 13 km of coastline along the Ligurian Sea. The peninsula is a hilly area that reaches a height of 610 m at the summit of Monte di Portofino.

The itinerary leads from Camogli on the severe and wild western slope of the Promontory to the famous village of Portofino, passing by the military installations of World War II, now hosting the interesting Visit Centre of the Park, and the thousand years old Abbey of San Fruttuoso. The first part of the itinerary is marked with “two red dots” and runs along the Gentile stream. A quite steep staircase with circa 900 steps will lead you up to the Church San Rocco, passing between olive groves, farmed terraces and tall dry walls. The hamlet of San Rocco di Camogli, in a unique position with a gorgeous lookout, is one of the accesses to the Park of Portofino.
