INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again-beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

  • Impressionism Post-Impressionism and Fauvism
    • This lecture provides a quick introduction to Impressionism, the Post- Impressionists, particularly Paul Cézanne, Divisionism/Pointillism, the Fauves and Matisse • The lecture ends with the exhibition held by Roger Fry in 1910 called Manet and the Post-Impressionists. This is regarded as a turning point and the time when developments that had taken place in France over the previous 20 years were seen in England. Although made fun of by the critics it changed the way many artists worked. Notes • The following are not covered as they were covered in the course last year. • Introduce the influence on England Whistler, English Impressionists • New English Art Club • Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) is the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886. He ‘acted as a father figure not only to the Impressionists’ but to all four of the major Post-Impressionists, including Georges Seurat (1859-1891), Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890, died aged 37)) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). • Roger Fry 1 • Created the name Post-Impressionist, started the Omega Workshop (Fitzroy Square), curator Metropolitan Museum, ‘discovered’ Paul Cezanne, Slade Professor • Wrote An Essay in Aesthetics • Organised the 1910 ‘Manet and the Post-Impressionists’ Exhibition, Grafton Galleries. ‘On or about December 1910 human character changed’ Vanessa Bell. • Organised the 1912 ‘Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition’. References • The main sources of information are the Tate website, Wikipedia, The Art Story and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Verbatim quotations are enclosed in quotation marks. We have survived two world wars but we have been flattened by this pandemic! Despite an amazing £80, 000 raised from last year’s crowd funder and a very generous rent break from the landlords we find ourselves facing the merde hitting the fan, if you will pardon my French! To paraphrase Dan Farson, between the crisis and the catastrophe there is always time for a glass of champagne..and some fabulous, FABULOUS art! We are so lucky to be the meeting and stomping ground for so many hugely talented artists.

  • Divisionism - Heritage
Divisionism - Heritage Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) went to live with his brother in Paris in 1886, where he fell under the influence of the Impressionists and Neo Impressionists. His palette lightened and became more colourful, and he adopted the technique of painting in small dabs of contrasting colours. van Gogh, Self Portrait 1887 Maximilien Luce (1858 – 1941) was a prolific French Neo- impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art, and also for his anarchist activism. Starting as an engraver, he then concentrated on painting, first as an Impressionist, then as a Pointillist, and Luce, Morning, Interior 1890 finally returning to Impressionism. Luce aligned with the Neo-impressionists not only in their artistic techniques, but also in their political philosophy of anarchism. Many of his illustrations were featured in socialist periodicals. Charles Angrand (1854 – 1926) was a French artist who gained renown for his Neo-Impressionist paintings and drawings. He was an important member of the Parisian avant-garde art scene in the late 1880s and early 1890s. He moved to Paris in 1882, becoming friends with Seurat, van Gogh, Signac, Luce, and Cross. In 1884 he co-founded Société des Artistes Indépendants, along with Seurat, Signac, Odilon Redon, and others. Angrand, The Western Railway at its Exit from Paris 1886 In 1887, L'Accident, his first Divisionist painting, was exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. Angrand joined Seurat in plein air painting on La Grande Jatte island. It has been said that he had the "ability to distil poetry from the most banal suburban scene" Angrand's implementation of Pointillist techniques differed from that of some of its leading proponents.
