Issue: 1 Greenside A Curious & Inspirational Place of Experiential Learning & Leadership Where we are .. Breaking Boundaries Learning is Everything, Everything is Learning

Welcome to the Year of Colour!

Date: Friday 15th October 2020

Dear Parents/ Carers, Welcome to our final Greenside Newsletter of the half term - we have made it this far and we are all feeling super positive and happy (if a little autumnal as the early mornings & evenings start to get darker). Last week our overall attendance was 99% so thank you all for making that happen - we are so grateful for each day we get together on site and having all our students here is so important. A special well done goes to Reception, Y3 and Y5 for 100% across the whole week - wonderful!

The Year of Colour continues to burst out at Greenside each day - we had such fun last week enjoying Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi and a special treat with Ciara Finney making her own fab version to help us learn the song too - we were most inspired! This week we have an equal amount of fun writing our own Greenside lyrics to the songs we have been studying over the last couple of weeks - oh what talented students we have!

1. Data Capture 1 This week our Y1 - Y6 students have had their first Test Ready experience of the academic year. Students in Y2 and Y6 have been taking end of year papers in Reading and Maths and this has been so helpful in allowing us all to know exactly how we support and challenge all our students individually. They all tried so hard and showed great resilience. Students in other year groups have been taking Maths papers and our Teachers have also been making TAs (Teacher Assessments) in Reading & Writing. Please check in by email with your daughter/ son’s Class Teacher if you have any questions or would like to know more about her/ his progress and attainment.

If you have a daughter/ son who is in Y2 please be aware that we have been told by the Government that they will have a Phonics Screening Check in December and these results will be reported to the DfE. This will replace the Screening Check they missed during Lockdown (it was officially cancelled by the DfE in June). This is a check where students read 40 words - some are ‘real’ words and some are ‘alien’ and students need to score 32 marks or more to reach the ARE (Age Related Expectation). Laura Gilroy and Michelle Williams are busy supporting and rehearsing these words and checks with students. If we feel your daughter/ son would benefit from some extra practice at home Laura or Michelle will contact you before half term holiday.

The Y6 journey has begun in earnest and Daniel Mahara will be keeping in touch with you about progress as the weeks go by.

Our Nursery & Reception Teachers will also begin the assessment process for our little EYFS students - just to make sure learning is happening as we hoped and they are all happy, having fun and feeling appropriately challenged. I think most of our N & R students will be looking forward to a very relaxed half term to sleep and regain some energy!

Over half term if you have any time please check out Year Group DfE allocated Spelling lists on our website - any time rehearsing and using these words would be time very well spent!

2. Y6 Secondary Transition This is our final reminder to all our Y6 Families - the Pan-London Secondary application should be completed by 30th October this year. Please contact us at any point if you have any questions this year! 1

3. Open Days Our Open Day film is a ‘raw, one-take’ tour of Greenside - it was fun to make and really is an organic, natural visit to classes - but we hope it gives everyone a flavour of Greenside. It is now on our website so please take a look if you have a daughter/ son ready to start Nursery or Reception in September 2021. We’d be really grateful if you can tell all your friends, neighbors and family as we cannot invite anyone to view Greenside in person - thank you!

4. Covid-reminders We have had a good week at Greenside - we are most fortunate that we have still not had any positive cases at Greenside or Griffin but at this pivotal moment in London’s safety we are being extra cautious on site, ensuring social distancing wherever possible and meeting the highest standards of cleaning. We are still going outside when we can and keeping windows and doors closed for good circulation. You may have heard stories about a possible ‘Circuit Break’ in the media this week. We will, of course, keep you updated if we hear anything further next week. Meanwhile please keep in touch with questions or suggestions on anything Covid related.

5. TEFAT Relationship Education As some of you may be aware the Government issued updated guidance for schools on teaching Relationship Education a year or so ago. The introduction of the guidance has been postponed because of Covid and will now either begin in the summer or autumn term 2021. I would like to put your minds at rest in a couple of ways at this point. Firstly there are few actual changes that affect Primary Schools and secondly we will be consulting with you before we begin any such teaching. We will share ideas, facts and information - do remember if you have any questions come and speak with us directly (or email in these Covid times). We will be able to answer any concerns and help keep everyone up to date with information.

6. Little Amal Some of you may have seen the Press release this week made by the charity Good Chance as Little Amal a 9 year old Syrian refugee girl is all set next year to make a walk from Turkey, across Europe before reaching London. Little Amal is actually a 3.5m high puppet and she is quite extraordinary. Some of our Greenside students ‘met’ her when she was a tiny prototype and helped create her personality as she started to grow and come to life. At the Press Release Mary & Andre (Y6) Ibrahim (Y5) and Lara (Y4) represented not only Greenside but all young people in an online event and shared a moment in history! Little Amal is making her journey for all the children who have been forced to undertake such extraordinary stories. Here at Greenside we will be doing some fab work this year to support Good Chance. I know some of your daughters & sons have already made a money box (see item in green below) and at home you have been collecting loose change. May I urge all families to get invoked - every penny students can collect will make a difference. We will be following Little Amal’s journey over the next few months and meeting and greeting her when she reaches London - where she is due to celebrate her 10th birthday with our Greenside families (we hope in a big outside party) so watch out for information!

GREENSIDE FILM FACTORY Film Inspired Money Boxes Collecting loose change for charity

One of the 1st Greenside traditions that our potential Head Girls & Boys have pitched in their applications is to ask our students (and their families) to please make a really interestingly designed ‘money box’ at home inspired by their Class Film for this half term. After they have designed and made the box at home please can your family collect loose change all the way through to the start of December. We will then choose a day to bring the money in and count it all. It really is a case that every penny counts and it’s a great way to get young people to engage with charity, counting money and seeing that a little contribution from a lot of people can make a huge difference and impact. It would be wonderful if you could send me a photograph of their Money Box when they have made it! With many thanks for your help. Karen and our Y6 students.

Have a great day, week ahead and half term. Karen

2 1. Message from the Head of School

Dear Greenside families, As we come to the end of our first half term, the time has zoomed by and as I have said many times - we have loved having our students back with us! This half term has been jam packed with incredible learning experiences, a Specialism focused entirely on Black Lives Matter and Black History, while our history crew days are only reaching the halfway point with another period of history to compare and contrast coming up. We are already excitedly planning next half term's learning experiences, ready to take it up another notch to keep those curious minds buzzing. This year's theme is The Year of Colour and it is definitely our students who have brought the colour back to Greenside! Robin Yeats (Head of School)

3 2. STAR Days - Hooks Goodness me our Classes have almost reached the end of their Colourful Film and our Teachers proudly share some of that amazing learning with you here. a) Nursery - Nursery has had a wonderful half-term learning all about London and Paddington ! This week we were able to use a variety of 2D shapes in order to re-create some iconic London symbols (like a red London bus and Big Ben). Then we were inspired by the dinosaurs at The Natural History Museum, so we became paleontologists in search of dinosaur fossils in the sand. Of course all of this hard work has been making us hungry so next week we will be getting busy learning how to make marmalade sandwiches... because they are Paddington's favourite! Interesting Facts about our Film: 1. "Paddington likes to eat orange marmalade!" Danny 2. "He has a red hat and a blue coat." Zeynep 3. "Paddington carries a brown suitcase." Theo b) Reception - As we get ready to move on from our London learning, we look back on our first half term of Reception with such great memories. Paddington helped us explore lots of different aspects of our city, from all the different jobs people do, to the journeys and stories of how so many people come to love in London and call it home- just like Paddington himself. This week we reflected on how our city has changed and how it might have looked in the olden days. We learnt about The Great Fire of London in 1666 and even set fire to a building to reenact it- a model one of course and with all safety measures carried out!

Interesting facts about our film 1. “If you wash your white clothes with a red sock everything will turn pink!” Kianna 2. “You need a lot of oranges to make marmalade. Like maybe 50,100” Gray 3. “One scene from Paddington 2 was filmed in Ms Buchanan’s Street! Kimberley c) Y1 - The Magic School Bus Ms Trapp tells us: “Y1's journey on The Magic School Bus is coming to an end. We have traveled over rainbows, back to the Jurassic era, to a recycling center, into a storm cloud, through the skeletal system, and into a computer. All this in 6 weeks! Our Y1 students would like to apologize to all the families for the rain that was created due to their fantastic Rain Dances. This Learning Experience helped inspire our students to create their own comic book strip about 'Weather Man' with a special talent for helping all the plants. Our students used colorful art mixed with their fantastic descriptive writing to create the next new bestseller comic book. We have also learned a lot about the science around us and we are ready to continue our academic journey as strong scientists within our STEM world. Well done for an incredible first half term back Y1, I am beyond proud of every single one of you!”

Interesting facts inspired by The Magic School Bus: "We learned about how color is made one time. But how is colour made on T.V.?" Tiana "The Magic School Bus is a cartoon with bright colors. The bus is yellow like they are in America." Saifan. d) Y2 - Anne with an ‘e’ Y2 have had some really interesting discussions this term come out of our Anne with an E learning and the hooks we have used. The most memorable would be our 'Community Matters' hook where we saw how the community of Avonlea came together to help a family in need. This got students really thinking about times when they have been helped by a person/people in their community and when they themselves have helped others. We wrote newspaper articles about, and a letter to, our community heroes thanking them for everything they do and we even got to make friendship bracelets for someone important to us in our Greenside Community, which tied in perfectly with our Maths learning on identifying shapes and patterns. We're looking forward to our final week hook 'The Colour of Money' and

4 thinking about how money has impacted us, our wider community and the world whilst getting hands on with lots of coins and notes in our very own pawn shop!

Interesting Facts about our Film: "I think they didn't have many colourful clothes because Anne with an E was set a long time ago and they didn't have much money." Nico "Anne with an E has very red hair and she doesn't like it. I think it's nice though" Ghali e) Y3 - Inside Out We have had some fantastic learning experiences based on our films! The students loved making their own broccoli pizzas! We were surprised to discover that most of the class really enjoyed it. We then wrote our own 'Disgusted Restaurant Reviews' based on Riley's experiences in the film. The students really enjoyed imagining all the disgusting things they might complain about in a restaurant and had a chance to use persuasive language to convince people to avoid the restaurant.

We looked more closely at the character of Disgust, who is very opinionated. We thought about the differences between opinions and facts and put this learning into practice for our class debate. The question, 'should homework be banned', was very divisive and resulted in a very animated discussion!

Interesting Facts about our Film: “I like how each colour is a different emotion in the film. Every week our hook is a different colour and emotion, like Yellow Joy or Red Anger. It can be really helpful to talk about all these different emotions in class. Some of the colours link to the emotions really well, like blue for sadness or red for anger, but we discussed whether green always makes you think of disgust, because sometimes it is used for jealousy too.” Saja

“The film is so colourful and I love that all the different characters have their own colours. I'm really excited for next week because we are looking at the colour pink and the character Bing Bong. He is in Riley's imagination, I think pink is a good colour for imagination because it's fun and happy.” Siham f) Y4 - Howl’s Moving Castle Y4 have loved learning through the ever-enigmatic Howl’s Moving Castle. It’s been beyond a wild ride, as we’ve made our own blob henchmen out of non-Newtonian fluid! During our week 6 hook, Howl’s Secret Garden, we reviewed the idea of a “secret garden,” recognising that it represents Howl’s safe space – a place where he can go to feel comfortable, loved, and to express himself. We wrote about our own safe spaces – what they look like, who would be allowed and invited in, where they would be, and most importantly, why these spaces are safe for us.

Interesting Facts about our Film: “Colour is shown in the war scenes, giving us a lot of dark and gloomy colours, but then we see how, in the secret garden, the film shows rainbow and happy colours.” Minnie

“I think that colour is shown a lot in the film because the colour wheels change colour as they spin. When the arrow lands on a particular colour, it will bring Howl into a different portal!” Lola g) Y5 - Coco In Y5 we have explored a number of themes related to our wonderful film Coco. We have used Mexican folklore of Alebrijes to inspire some amazing creative writing and beautiful clay sculptures - and even more recently looking into themes of betrayal, adoration, and family. We have been so impressed with Y5’s ability to interpret the themes from the film and turn them into fantastic pieces of writing. Well-done to all the Y5 students.

Interesting Facts about our Films:

Alliah: “I have loved the Mexican art we have studied. We have learnt about Frida Kahlo and created some amazing Cactus and Sombrero art.” Sonia: “I loved learning about the Day of the Dead this week. Did you know it's on the same day as Halloween? We got to have a party and make masks and cookies. I decorated the whole classroom, it was great!” Max: “I enjoyed learning about Alebrijes and Mexican folklore. Did you know that they are mythical creatures created by a famous artist? I was really proud of the wrote about my mythical Alebrije.”

5 h) Y6 - Cool Runnings This piece was written by Mary & Ayman: In Y6 we have been exploring the film Cool Runnings. It is about a Jamaxican Bobsleigh Team who work their way into the 1988 Calgary Olympics - amazingly it is based on a true story and this adds to the excitement created by the Director. We have been using the vibrant colours of the Caribbean to create Art. We made Bernard Hayes Art filled with rhythm and movement. Our own Wassely Kandinsky style Art using different shapes and angles revealed different abstract techniques and shades. We have also been looking at the Windrush Generation and the colours of the two contrasting places, the Caribbean and Britain. The Caribbean was bright and exotic whilst Britain was filmed with dark shades with grey black and brown. We have loved working with all sorts of colours to celebrate the Greenside Year of Colour!

3. The Mahara’s Maths Revolution - Maths is Back!

Stop the press ……. On Thursday 15th October we are proud to announce the arrival of a new Greenside baby! Kelly and our very own Y6 Teacher Daniel welcomed Freddie Joseph Mahara to the world. We are so thrilled and excited by this news and here he is:

Daniel says - Maths question can you guess Freddie’s weight?

4. Artistic Greenside - A Green Garden Competition So many of our students have read The Secret Garden and many have watched one of the versions of the film. On October 23rd Sky Cinema are releasing a new film of this magical story. This week they sent us information of a competition that looks like it was specially made for Greenside as we rewild! Please take a look and if your daughter/ son wishes to make an entry just send their submission to KBS and I will make sure it reaches Sky in time for the competition.

“We would like young people to imagine they have discovered the gates to a hidden, secret garden and to let us know what it looks like. For inspiration you can think about the sort of things that would make you happy in a garden – anything from beautiful plants to a place to share with friends or a garden full of sunshine and wildlife. Please be as creative as you like! Students can choose how they would like to showcase their garden. They can submit a drawing, painting or collage of their garden or, if they prefer, they can take a photo of a model or fully planted mini garden they have made and send that to us. The winner will have the chance to see their garden, or elements of it, brought to life either in their school or in a community space. The winner and runners up will also win a movie goody bag. Deadline for entries is November 19th 2020”.

5. The Greenside Film Factory - Crews are Back! Our Colourful History Film Crews have been delightfully rich and challenging at times as we have learnt facts galore! We hope you saw some pictures on Instagram this week too. As we near the end of this 1st period of history our students will ask similar big questions relating to a second period of significance history after the holiday and explore a) a timeline of History b) what each period inherited, how they lived and their legacy. These overarching questions allow students to understand the connections between periods and to build upon previous/ other knowledge. This alongside a totally immersive experiential model of learning supports deep and long lasting learning - go Greenside students! a) Film Crews 1 & 2 It has been a wonderful half term of exciting and creative learning in Crew 1 & 2 on their topic of Ancient Egypt. This has truly been an amazing period in History to study and the students have enjoyed every moment!! We have of course, studied the legacy of the phenomenal pyramids on our crew days, learning about how they were built, what materials and techniques were used and how these amazing buildings influenced future periods in History.

Please enjoy these images of our students re-creating these magnificent buildings using different mediums.

7 b) Film Crews 3 & 4 The Y3 & Y4 Crew have been studying the wonderful world of the Ancient Greeks and this week our focus was Ancient Greek architecture. Revered as one of the most influential of architectural styles, we have explored the many wonderful examples of buildings around London today that have been inspired by this design aesthetic. The most famous of which is probably the British Museum but the legacy extends well beyond that into the National Gallery, Mansion House, Apsley House, Canada House, St Pancras New Church, Theatre Royal Haymarket and many, many more. Our crew are ‘masters’ at identifying the key features of Ancient Greek architecture and are specialists on the stylistic variations of Ancient Greek columns. So next time you are wandering, London, if you have a student from Y3 or 4 with you, you're in for a historical and architectural superclass!

c) Film Crews 5 & 6 Y5 and Y6 have continued to be immersed in the world of the Tudors. We learnt all about how religion changed throughout Tudor England and the influence of key monarchs on the nation. Last week, we assumed the roles of young Tudors as we learnt all about their daily lives- from the luxurious lives of the royal family to the trials and tribulations of the poor. We studied their architecture during crew this week, and used black and white to create our own freeze frames of Tudor streets. We thought about the lasting architectural impact of Tudor designs on our buildings today and explored ‘wattle and daub’ by weaving paper together to create a frame. We are true ‘experts’ now!

Mary & Ayman tell us: “We have been studying the Tudors in Crew. We learnt about the War of the Roses - two rival families were fighting for the English throne. They were the Yorkosts with the white rose as their symbol and the Lancastrians whose herald was a red rose. The clothes of the Tudors were often red and black and embroidered with , pearls and jewels - so appropriate for the Greenside Year of Colour!

6. Sharing Events a) Playground Development This week has been the most exciting week in the playground since the start of the year. Why? A new part of the playground was finally opened for our students to enjoy! Over the last 4 weeks, the 'mound' area in the corner of the playground has been going through a well needed makeover. The aim was to have an area that the children could sit on the grass and enjoy, read under the tree and yes, probably roll down on occasion. Well thanks to all of your amazing fundraising and the work of the PSA, we finally achieved it! The majority of the mound was excavated, refilled and made nice and even. The drain at the bottom has been safely covered to avoid a trip hazard. Stepping stones have been added for children to play on or sit on. Steps down the middle give easy access up and down. Wooden posts make a lovely dividing wall at the top which has a layer of durable 'tiger mulch' and finally, a lovely bench has been added around the tree. Thank you Greenside families! Robin

8 b) Nursery & Reception Sharing Event At this point in the year we would ordinarily be inviting our EYFS families into Greenside for a special sharing event to show them all the amazing learning we’ve done since September. This year to be Covid safe we will do this in a slightly different way. On Wednesday 21st October we will be sending our EYFS parents/ carers a link to a special Celebration Film instead - we can’t wait to share! Stay tuned! c) Social Media Do remember to sign up and check out the posts, comment and tell your friends and family: @greensideprimaryschool On Twitter: @greensidew12.

8. Specialisms - Black History Ms Webber explains: This term we have been focusing on Black History in each of our Specialism sessions. We began by looking at slavery then moved onto the Windrush, the Civil Rights movement and the more recent Black Lives Matter movement. It has been a great opportunity to share and discuss this important subject and it has been a great way to honour the memory of our dear Caroline Allen who was so passionate about this subject. Here are some images of the art piece that was inspired by Black Britons.

9. Our Support Staff Our final TAs to be introduce this week say: a) “It has been so nice to be back at Greenside and to be with everyone again. I missed you all during lockdown. It has been great to see how excited everyone has been to be back at school with their friends.” Ms Martyn

We explored: Yellow Submarine, Yellow, Follow the Yellow Brick Road, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Big Yellow Taxi, Blackbird, 99 Red Balloons, True Colours & shared the story of Vera Lynn and The White Cliffs of Dover. Greenside students then turned into lyricists and rewrote the words to create Greenside anthems - we can’t wait until we can sing them for you in person but here are some of the lyrics to read.

1 2 13. Random Act of Kindness We are so pleased this week to share some beautiful moments of and random acts of kindness that our Greensid students have shown over the past few weeks - how lucky we are to have such thoughtful and lovely young people!

Tien is always demonstrating random acts of kindness in Nursery. He is really great at sharing with others, taking turns, and playing cooperatively. This week while Tien was riding around the Learning Garden on his bike, he offered to give his friend Jairah a ride on the back (N)

Ted is always super kind to everyone all the time, but this week he did something small to help a friend when she was having trouble turning on a tap. Ted said, “Oh it’s a bit slippery, would you like me to help you?” And saved the day. SuperTed to the rescue! (R)
