LE MONDE Fin Août productions presents FRENCH With ALBAN LENOIR BLOOD SAMUEL JOUY PAUL HAMY (UN FRANCAIS), A FILM BY DIASTEME 97’ / DCP / 2.35 / Dolby SRD ©Fin Août / Photo Guy Ferrandis SYNOPSIS It’s the story of a Frenchman, born in 1965, on the outskirts of Paris. The story of a skinhead, who hates Arabs, Jews, blacks, communists and gays. An anger that will take thirty years to die out. A bastard, who will take thirty years to become someone else. And he will never forgive himself for it. DIASTEME’S BIOGRAPHY Although initially leaning towards a musical career, Diastème decided at the age of 20 to become a journalist. He wrote for the press during several years before turning towards litera- ture, cinema and theater. His first play as playwright and director wasLa Nuit du thermometre [The Night of the Thermometer], for which he received two Moliere nominations in 2003. He followed it with 107 Ans [107 years], adapted from his third novel, La Tour de Pise [The Tower of Pisa]. He staged several creations for the Avignon Off Theater Festival and in 2008 he put on a production of Albert Camus’ The Just Assassins. In 2009, he staged his own creation, L’Amour de l’art [Love of Art]. Diastème has also co-written screenplays for television (Close to Léo by Christophe Honoré) and for the movies (Les châteaux de sable [Sand Castles], by Olivier Jahan and Coluche, l’his- toire d’un mec [Coluche, The story of a Guy], by Antoine de Caunes). His first feature-length film as a director wasSunny Spells, written with Christophe Honoré (2008). In 2014 he directed French Blood which came out in French cinemas on June 10th 2015. His third feature film, Pimpette, was shot during the summer of 2015. ©Fin Août / Photo Guy Ferrandis INTERVIEW WITH DIASTEME What prompted you to write this film? • From Sarkozy to Hollande: the New Normal?
From Sarkozy to Hollande: The New Normal? Alistair Cole (Cardiff University, UK), Sophie Meunier (Princeton University, US) and Vincent Tiberj (Sciences Po, Paris, France Paoper presented to the Annual Conference of the Political Studies Association, Cardiff, 25-27 March 2013 1 The overall aim of the Developments in series, form which this paper is drawn, is to provide an integrated and systematic assessment of current trends, drawing on the latest research but with sufficient background to make the book accessible for readers without a detailed knowledge of French politics. Two central questions guide the present volume. First, is there still a “French exception”, a uniquely French path to identity and globalization - if there ever was? And second, did the presidencies of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande represent mostly rupture or continuity with French political and cultural traditions? To answer these questions, rather than identifying a single encompassing theme, the book sets out to capture the past decade or so of French politics across five main dimensions: the core political and institutional evolutions; processes of partisanship, citizenship, communication and mediation; political attitudes and elections; domestic policy reforms and the multi-level, regional and international contexts. Though there is no overarching conclusion to this volume, the key approach underpinning most chapters is one of France’s contingent governance --the country caught between converging economic, European and international pressures and the robust defence of a particular model of republican integration. The main purpose of the introductory chapter on which this paper is based is to provide a temporally specific overview that integrates the five dimensions mentioned above and contributes to our understanding of the evolution of the French polity.

Europe Program 2017 | No.01 THE RISE OF THE FRONT NATIONAL Taking Stock of Ten Years of French Mainstream Politics MARTIN QUENCEZ AND MARTIN MICHELOT FOREWORD BY TIMO LOCHOCKI THE RISE OF THE FRONT NATIONAL Taking Stock of Ten Years of French Mainstream Politics 2017 | No.01 MARTIN QUENCEZ AND MARTIN MICHELOT FOREWORD BY TIMO LOCHOCKI SUMMARY: The growing influence of the Front National (FN) in French politics and the explanations for its success are playing a pivotal role in the upcoming 2017 French elections. Favorable economic and political contexts and a successful rebranding of the party are often emphasized to explain the current situation. However, the role of mainstream parties, and especially that of the two previous failed presidencies, has been largely underestimated. This paper argues that although Marine Le Pen’s internal strategy to transform the party’s image and to design a coherent anti-liberal project has increased its influence in the French political landscape, its seemingly unstoppable rise is best understood by the ability of the FN to take advantage of four key conditions. First, its anti-establishment discourse has thrived due to the general lack of clear political alternatives; second, anti- liberal promises made by mainstream parties have not been delivered; third, the FN has managed to appear as a victim of the media system; finally, the depreciation of the presidential function during the last ten years has weakened the traditional bipartisanism and helped the FN emerge as a credible alternative. Even if the FN is does not come to power in this election, it is likely to become the main menace in the French political system during the next presidency.

Born on April 24, 1952 in Arcueil, France, Gaultier was an only child who spent his youth struggling to escape the influence of his parents, who were both accountants and who hoped that their son would become a Spanish teacher. The future designer was greatly influenced by his grandmother, Marie Garrabe, a hypnotist and practitioner of alternative healing who encouraged him to pursue the unmanly pastimes of sketching and costume making. Gaultier first realized the impact of his sketches when he was punished by his school teacher for drawing Folies Bergère showgirls. He was made to walk around school with the drawing pinned to his back. The punishment, however, only made the young Gaultier aware of his potential for showmanship. Gaultier had no formal fashion training. Instead, he sent hundreds of his sketches to various couture houses.

  • Political Articulations of the Memory of the Algerian War in France
Morin, PM 2020 Cultural Insecurities and the Desire for Separation: Political Articulations of the Memory of the Algerian War in France. Modern Languages Open, 2020(1): 29 pp. 1–13. DOI: https://doi.org/10.3828/mlo.v0i0.325 GLOBAL CRISIS IN MEMORY Cultural Insecurities and the Desire for Separation: Political Articulations of the Memory of the Algerian War in France Paul Max Morin Sciences Po, FR [email protected] French colonization and the consequent War of Independence in Algeria have marked contemporary French society deeply in numerous ways. For decades, the history and memories of these events have been described as ‘padlocked’ by the state. Since the 2000s, academics have observed an increase in the political use of memory. While the literature has often employed psychoanalytical concepts to interpret this resurgence of the repressed, I argue that these readings are in fact designed to be present incursions into the past, serving to legitimate contem- porary political projects. This is because new political actors and projects have emerged defending certain visions of the past in order to bolster present ambi- tions. In recent years, France has also experienced a rise of both far-right national- ist movements and Islamism. These radical formations continue to instrumentalize the history and memories of colonization and the war in Algeria to legitimate their discourses. In a fast-changing world, radical groups promote the rehabilitation of a reassuring past in which racial hierarchies and endogamy are associated with prestige and stability. I contend that while radical elements develop discourses bearing on the past, they thrive on the cultural insecurities of today’s youth and thereby contribute to the reification of identities.
