Even though they were only protesting for men’s rights the women thought that having a household member who could vote could make a big difference on matters such as income, wages, and working conditions. Changes were introduced in 1832 which began to give more people a voice in politics in britain. Around 50 years later in 1884, there was a big step forward as the amount of men that could vote had tripled. Womens suffrage campaigners They wanted education for women and a vote for women too. They wanted the vote because they believed this would help improve the position and lives of women. They used methods like speeches and lectures to help campaigns. They were unsuccessful because even if they did get the vote, only women who owned a certain amount of property could vote. They really emphasised the issue which raised a lot of awareness and stated the fact that women should have the rights to vote. There were many disagreements amongust the different campaigners. There disagreements included whether women should be granted the vote on the same terms as men. -

The WSPU was set up by Emmeline Pankhurst and her daughters. The WSPU was created because they didn’t want to wait for women’s rights by campaigning and holding petitions. Identity of Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison Revealed in BFI Film

Source: BFI National Archive Identity of Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison revealed in BFI film footage for the first time For Immediate release: 6 June 2018, London The BFI is thrilled to announce the discovery of previously unidentified moving image footage of iconic Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison revealed within a film of a Suffragettes procession in 1910, Scenes in the Record Demonstration of Suffragettes (1910) held by the BFI National Archive and available to view for free on BFI Player as part of the BFI’s Suffragettes on Film collection. This is a significant find as the only previously known footage featuring Emily Davison came from the 1913 Epsom Derby Day, in which she lost her life, and from her funeral procession. The discovery was made by writer and performer Deborah Clair who was watching the BFI’s Suffragettes on Film collection as research for her new play about Davison, A Necessary Woman. Whilst studying Scenes in the Record Demonstration of Suffragettes (1910) Deborah Clair thought she saw Emily Davison in the Suffragette procession, in her graduate gown and mortar board, “A familiar figure emerged. I instantly knew it was her right away and I even cried out, ‘Emily’ almost to get her attention! Then, even more strangely, the figure stops as the line temporarily halts and she looks directly at the camera. I could see her up close, in motion, for the first time. She was alive and she looked – defiant!” Clair compared the moving image to a photo she knew of Davison held by the National Portrait Gallery. -

Mary lived at home while growing up and was educated at Bath High School. #KNOWHERNAME She first became involved with the suffragettes in 1906 when she sent a donation of 3 shillings to the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). She later went to WSPU meetings where she met Annie Kenney, a prominent suffragette who she became close friends with. In 1908 she helped organise the campaign for women’s suffrage in her local area; her work involved distributing leaflets around Bath and Image from Wikipedia speaking at open air meetings. In December of 1908 she was elected onto the executive committee for the local branch of the WSPU. Mary was prepared to do peaceful methods of protest but refused to be involved in any activities that could get her arrested as she thought her father would disapprove. Her home became known as the 'Suffragettes Rest' as suffragettes came to stay in order to recover from their prison sentences. -

(Publisher: Suffrage Atelier). 1 Suffrage campaigners were experts in creating powerful propaganda images which expressed their sense of injustice. This image shows the whole range of women being kept out of the polling station by the law and authority represented by the policeman. These include musicians, clerical workers, mothers, university graduates, nurses, mayors, and artists. The men include gentlemen, manual workers, and agricultural labourers. This hints at the class hierarchies and tensions which were so important in British society at this time, and which also influenced the suffrage movement. All the women are represented as gracious and dignified, in contrast to the men, who are slouching and casual. Davison (1913). Emily Wilding Davison is best known as the suffragette who 2 died after being trampled by the King’s horse on Derby Day, but as this photo shows, there was much more to her story. She studied at Royal Holloway College in London and St Hugh’s College Oxford, but left her job as a teacher to become a full- time suffragette. She was one of the most committed militants, who famously hid in a cupboard in the House of Commons on census night, 1911, so that she could give this as her address, and was the first woman to begin setting fire to post boxes. -

Sylvia Pankhurst Memorial Lecture Wortley Hall August 2014 Edited transcript of a talk by The Emily Davison Lodge Philippa Clark: Every year we try and find a speaker who is linked to our movement but who will also broaden our vision because sometimes we can get so focused on our campaigning and specific objectives that we forget about the wider picture. Earlier this year I went to an exhibition at Tate Britain in London of Sylvia Pankhurst’s paintings which made me remember that first and foremost Sylvia’s training was in art and that her original mission had been to be an artist. At the exhibition I read that there had been two dynamic women who had lobbied the Tate in order to get the work on public display. Fortunately, the sisters all thought that it would be a good idea to have them deliver this year’s lecture. So, we’re absolutely delighted that they can tell us in person about Sylvia Pankhurst the artist and why they lobbied for the exhibition. Hester and Olivia are multi-disciplinary artists who collaborate together under the umbrella of something called ‘The Emily Davison Lodge’ - that's Emily Wilding Davison, the suffragette who died trying to pin the flag on the king’s horse. They research and make artworks to re-historicise - which I thought was a good word - the suffragettes, in particular looking at the artists involved in the campaign and the role of militancy. Hester is going to give the talk and Olivia is going to join her at the end to answer any questions. -
How Effective Were the Suffragist and Suffragette Campaigns?
What were the arguments for and against female suffrage? Note: the proper name for votes for women is ‘Female Suffrage’ In the nineteenth century, new jobs emerged for women as teachers, as shop workers or as clerks and secretaries in offices. Many able girls from working-class backgrounds could achieve better-paid jobs than those of their parents. They had more opportunities in education., for example a few middle-class women won the chance to go to university, to become doctors. Laws between 1839 and 1886 gave married women greater legal rights. However, they could not vote in general elections. The number of men who could vote had gradually increased during the nineteenth century (see the Factfile). Some people thought that women should be allowed to vote too. Others disagreed. But the debate was not, simply a case of men versus women. How effective were the suffragist and suffragette campaigns? Who were the suffragists? The early campaigners for the vote were known as suffragists. They were mainly (though not all) middle-class women. When the MP John Stuart Mill had suggested giving votes to women in 1867, 73 MPs had supported it. After 1867, local groups set up by women called women’s suffrage societies were formed. By the time they came together in 1897 to form the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), there were over 500 local branches. By 1902, the campaign had gained the support of working-class women as well. In 1901–1902, Eva Gore-Booth gathered the signatures of 67,000 textile workers in northern England for a petition (signed letter) to Parliament. -

Objects Linked to Women's Suffrage in Moad's Collection
Background Information – objects linked to Women’s Suffrage in MoAD’s collection The issue of female suffrage was one of the major unresolved questions in western democracies in the early decades of the twentieth century. Many activists looked to Australia as the exemplar of progressive democratic leadership, because Australian women had won both the vote and the right to stand for parliament at a national level in 1903. Australians were also active in suffrage campaigns overseas, particularly in the United Kingdom, in the years just prior to the First World War. The formation of the Women s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in 1903 marked a break from the politics of demure persuasion that characterised the earlier period of the suffrage campaign. Frustrated at the lack of progress from years of moderate speeches and promises about women's suffrage from members of parliament, Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the WSPU,and several colleagues decided to abandon these patient tactics in favour of more militant ones. Emmeline later wrote that Deeds, not words, was to be our permanent motto. (E. Pankhurst, My Own Story, 1914, p.38). Over several years the actions of WPSU members became increasingly physical and violent. Emmeline herself was jailed several times for her actions, the first time in 1908 when she tried to enter Parliament to deliver a protest resolution to Prime Minister Asquith. She spoke out against the conditions of her first incarceration, protesting at the tiny amounts of food she received, the vermin, and the hardship of solitary confinement. In 1908 two WSPU members, Edith New and Mary Leigy, threw rocks at the windows of the Prime Minister s home at 10 Downing Street.
