UWE Obergs LACY POOL Uwe Oberg Piano / Rudi Mahall Clarinets / Michael Griener Drums
UWE OBERGs LACY POOL Uwe Oberg piano / Rudi Mahall clarinets / Michael Griener drums Just released! LACY POOL_2 (Leo Records / London) LACY POOL was founded by German pianist Uwe Oberg. With an intriguing lineup with the Berlin-based clarinettist Rudi Mahall and drummer Michael Griener, the band explores different styles in Steve Lacy's music and Oberg's compositions. It's a joyful celebration as well as an deconstruction, that transfers the Lacy's pieces into the present. Fresh and inquisitive. JAZZWEEKLY July 2017 “On Lacy Pool, an intriguing lineup (piano-trombone-drums) revisit what might one day become standards - 10 compositions penned by Steve Lacy. Uwe Oberg's angular lines, Christof Thewes' soaring trombone and drummer Michael Griener's clever support help bring out the joy that inhabits those pieces. Their truculent nods at Dixieland or Thelonious Monk are a reminder of how both influences informed the late soprano sax player's development. They never get lost in a meditative state, because Oberg and company's mood is definetely more celebratory than mournful. To sum up, this is an excellent addition to the recent tributes paid to Lacy's legacy that will surely inspire more generations to come. DOWNBEAT, December 2010 Great players, luminously entertaining album. TOUCHING EXTREMES, Okt. 2010 Confirming that the music of a true original like Lacy is best celebrated by adding to it rather than copying, the three leap into the Lacy Pool at the deep end. Accepting this challenge, they still manage an Olympic medal-like performance. KEN WAXMAN, March 2010 This refreshing and innovative, forward-thinking look on Steve Lacy's music is imaginatively clever as it is delightful. -

We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. Interview: Cooper-Moore Sometimes it is more difficult, especially during the bleak winter months, to 6 by Kurt Gottschalk put together a good mixture of feature subjects but we quickly forget about that when June rolls around. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, this first month of Artist Feature: Orrin Evans summer. Just like everyone pulls out shorts and skirts and sandals and flipflops, 7 by Terrell Holmes the city unleashes concert after concert, festival after festival. Holy Abyss, a collaborative project between New York guitarist Joel Harrison and Italian bassist Lorenzo Feliciati, is an antidote to angst. Flowing from a deep communion between the artists, the album turns dread on its head, offering a series of expansive soundscapes full of lustrous harmonies, searching melodies and knowing interplay. Featuring trumpeter Cuong Vu, drummer Dan Weiss and Roy Powell on piano and Hammond B3 organ, the quintet reflects jazz’s increasingly international reach. Harrison and Weiss, musical comrades for many years, are New Yorkers, while longtime collaborators Feliciati and Powell hail from Rome and Oslo via the UK, respectively. Vu, who has toured and recorded with Feliciati and Powell, was born in Vietnam and is now based in Seattle, near where he grew up. The musicians are united by a passion for modern jazz unbounded by stylistic conventions. Open to sounds from around the world, they have all created music infused with electronics, odd meters, and uncommon timbres and tonal palettes. Holy Abyss opens with Harrison’s anguished ballad “Requiem for an Unknown Soldier,” which establishes the album’s elemental sensibility with its ethereal trumpet fanfare and slow burning guitar solo. -

AkI TAkASe LA PLANèTe FLYING SOUL I don’t know which way is up. Aki Takase takes me to a place which looks new and exciting, but at the same time feels very fami - liar to me. There are constant twists of perspective. I become dizzy, as if I were riding a roller coaster through a primeval forest. There are trees standing there like musicians, and each of their green sheets of music resembles a painting or a book. I want to stay still to study them, but it doesn’t work, and right now it’s exciting to keep pace with the music. Life doesn’t wait for us, nor does music. We still don’t miss anything. Hundreds of ghosts and monsters are hiding in these woods. They aren’t malicious, more humorous, but still so energetic that their strength can frighten a civilised human being. The figure “Oni” from Japanese folklore is more comparable to Dionysus than to a devil. -

Jazz Collection: Django Bates - britische Wundertüte Dienstag, 13. Oktober 2020, 21.00 – 22.00 Uhr, SRF 2 Kultur Samstag, 17.
