Mr. John Sims (retired) [email protected] Rev. Mr. Myles Decker (retired) Mary, Queen of Heaven: The season of is a spiritual journey. Three saints of great prominence during the season of Advent are St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist and Mary, the Blessed Mother. Let us look to Mary, the Blessed Mother and the Queen of Heaven. God chose her from all women of all time to be the mother of the Divine Son of God. Our Lord was conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit and born of Mary. She is the Mother of the Church, which is the Mystical Body of Christ. At the time of the , Mary responded to the angel with the words, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” [Luke 1:38] Mary’s “yes” to God encourages us to say “yes” to God. We will grow in the spiritual life by meditating on the mysteries of the holy rosary. During Advent, there are two great Feasts of Mary. The first is the Solemnity of her Immaculate Conception, which this year will be celebrated on Monday, December 9th (usually on December 8th). The teaching of the Church is that from the first instant of her conception, Mary was kept free from the stain of original sin by a singular grace and the privilege of Almighty God, in view of the foreseen merits of Jesus Christ, our Savior. In 1846, the bishops of the United States of America proclaimed Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception as our national patroness. On December 12, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This feast recalls the apparitions of Mary at the hill of Tepeyac, Mexico in 1531 to the native convert, St. Juan Diego. Pope Pius XII named Our Lady of Guadalupe the “Patroness of the Americas.” St. John Paul II called Mary, “the Star of the New Evangelization.” Mary under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe is especially invoked as the patroness of the unborn as the miraculous image portrays Mary as being pregnant. When the Queen of Heaven appeared to St. Juan Diego, she requested that a shrine be built on the site of the apparitions and for him to relay her message to the bishop. When the bishop requested some sign of Mary’s request, our Lady provided roses which Juan Diego carried in his tilma. When Juan presented the roses to the bishop, the miraculous image was formed. The original image is still venerated in the basilica after 488 years. The news of the apparitions and the miraculous image were a catalyst that increased Christian devotion and conversions. The Feast Our Lady of Guadalupe is thus an important and popular celebration for all those of Mexican heritage and for the Faithful of North and South America. We will have a parish celebration on Thursday, December 12th beginning with the rosary and Mass. I have visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City many times and have always been impressed with the devotion and dedication. We may see ourselves as being on a spiritual journey. St. John the Baptist, St. Joseph, & Mary, Our Blessed Mother & Queen of Heaven, Please pray for us.

“Be strong, fear not! Here is your God… then the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing.” (First reading) What fears hold us back from living our faith? What miracles would be possible if we put fear aside?

Connecting with everyday life: In this Advent season, and throughout the year, we encourage people to take to heart God’s loving presence within and around them. Today, we may tackle the greatest obstacle to living faith in daily life: fear. Living faith in daily life as a disciple who is committed to steward his or her gifts well often feels risky — we must rely on God’s providence and presence in order to make Christ’s presence known to those who are blind or deaf to the message of the Gospel, those who are paralyzed by their life circumstances, those who fear rejection in living or sharing their faith. When we take the message of Isaiah to heart today, we realize that we can put fear aside, and that doing so will enable God to work through us. All women are invited to join the St. Therese Women’s Bible Study on the Book of Revelation beginning in 2020

Perhaps no book in the Bible fascinates people more than Revelation. Yet relatively few people have studied the book, especially from a Catholic perspective. Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come is an intriguing 11-session study program that shows how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. Presenter Jeff Cavins pulls back the veil on the rich symbolism present in Revelation. Discover what the mysterious figures and image of Revelation mean and see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the “end times.”
