  • By Brian Welsh
BEATS BY BRIAN WELSH SYNOPSIS 1994, a small town in central Scotland. Best mates Johnno and Spanner share a deep bond. Now on the cusp of adulthood, life is destined to take them in different directions – Johnno’s family are moving him to a new town and a better life, leaving Spanner behind to face a precarious future. But this summer is going to be different for them, and for the country. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK. In pursuit of adventure and escape, the boys head out on one last night together to an illegal rave. Stealing cash from Spanner’s older brother, under the hazy stewardship of pirate radio DJ D-Man, the boys journey into an underworld of anarchy, freedom and a full-on collision with the forces of law and order. A universal coming of age story, set to a soundtrack as eclectic and electrifying as the scene it gave birth to, BEATS is a story for our time – of friendship, rebellion and the irresistible power of gathered youth. DIRECTOR: Brian Welsh PRODUCER: Camilla Bray EXEC. PRODUCER: Steven Soderbergh SCREENPLAY: Kieran Hurley, Brian Welsh MUSIC: JD Twitch (Optimo) CAST: Cristian Ortega, Lorn Macdonald, Laura Fraser Q&A WITH BRIAN WELSH How did you come to be involved with BEATS, which is based on Kieran Hurley’s 2012 play of the same name? A friend said, “You have to see this show playing at the Bush Theatre in London – it’s about you growing up.” When I read the synopsis of BEATS – this story about a 15-year-old boy going to a rave at the time the Criminal Justice Act was introduced – I grabbed a ticket and went along.

  • A Profile of Marc Acardipane
the mover / pcp The Wire July 1998 The Mover A profile of Marc Acardipane A profile of Marc Acardipane (a.k.a. The Mover, Mescalinum United and another twenty or so alter- egos), the shadowy figure behind Frankfurt's PCP, Dance Ecstasy 2001 and Cold Rush labels, pioneer of gabba, doyen of phuture hardcore, and guru of gloomcore. Originally published in The Wire, July 1998 by Simon Reynolds. Queens, New York, a Saturday night in April: Lenny Dee, hardcore techno warlord and boss of Brooklyn's Industrial Strength label, is celebrating "30 years breathing, 15 years deejaying" at Club Voodoo in the sedate suburb of Bayside. For his birthday bash he's flown in a bunch of gabba allies from across the Atlantic--stormcore DJ Manu Le Malin, English hardtrance outfit Nebula 2 (whose '92- era breakbeat techno for Reinforced reputedly blew Goldie's mind at Rage), plus this mysterious figure from Germany called The Mover who's making his US debut. Since 1990, using over twenty different pseudonyms, The Mover has released literally hundreds of tracks via the cluster of labels affiliated to Frankfurt-based PCP; tracks whose catalogue numbers are recited in awestruck tones by hardcore cognoscenti. But when the Mover takes over the decks a little after 1-AM, it seems like few of the teenravers on the dancefloor realise that the nondescript-looking fellow in the DJ booth is a living legend. They sho' 'nuff know his tunes, though, roaring their approval and moshing violently to the bonehead bounce of gabbanthems like Turbulence's "Six Millions Ways To Die", with its Sid Vicious "My Way" intro and murderous ragga sample.

  • Techno » Techno
Club Guide » Techno » Techno http://www.clubguide.it/?p=1023 Techno Techno is a form of electronic dance music (EDM) that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, USA during the mid to late 1980s. The first recorded use of the word techno, in reference to a genre of music, was in 1988.Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of subgenres have been built. The initial take on techno arose from the melding of Eurocentric synthesizer-based music with various African American styles such as Chicago house, funk, electro, and electric jazz. Added to this was the influence of futuristic and fictional themes that were relevant to life in American late capitalist society: most particularly the book The Third Wave by Alvin Toffler.Pioneering producer Juan Atkins cites Toffler’s phrase “techno rebels” as inspiring him to use the word techno to describe the musical style he helped to create. This unique blend of influences aligns techno with the aesthetic referred to as afrofuturism. To producers such as Derrick May, the transference of spirit from the body to the machine is often a central preoccupation; essentially an expression of technological spirituality. In this manner: “techno dance music defeats what Adorno saw as the alienating effect of mechanisation on the modern consciousness“. Music journalists and fans of techno are generally selective in their use of the term; so a clear distinction can be made between sometimes related but often qualitatively different styles, such as tech house and trance. “Techno” is also commonly confused with generalized descriptors, such as electronic music and dance music.

  • Disco's Revenge: House Music's Nomadic Memory
Disco’s Revenge: House Music’s Nomadic Memory Feature Article Hillegonda C. Rietveld London South Bank University Abstract This article addresses the role of house music as a nomadic archival institution, constituted by the musical history of disco, invigorating this dance genre by embracing new production technologies and keeping disco alive through a rhizomic assemblage of its affective memory in the third record of the DJ mix. This exploration will be illustrated through a close analysis of a specific DJ set by a Chicago house music producer, Larry Heard, in the setting of Rotterdam, 2007, in which American house music is recontextualised. Refining the analysis through close attention to one of the tracks played during that particular set, Grand High Priest’s 2006 “Mary Mary”, the analysis shows how DJ and music production practices intertwine to produce a plurality of unstable cultural and musical connections that are temporarily anchored within specific DJ sets. The conceptual framework draws on the work of Deleuze, Guattari and Foucault, as well as Baudrillard’s sense of seduction, with the aim to introduce a fluid notion of mediated nomadic cultural memory, a type of counter- memory, enabled by the third record and thereby to playfully re-imagine the dynamic function of a music archive. Keywords: house music, DJ practices, third record, cultural memory, nomadology Dr. Hillegonda Rietveld is Reader in Cultural Studies at London South Bank University, UK, where she teaches and supervises topics in sonic culture. Her publications address the development and experience of electronic dance music cultures and she is the author of This Is Our House: House Music, Cultural Spaces and Technologies.
