Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp Game Notes JACKSONVILLE JUMBO SHRIMP GAME NOTES Mobile BayBears (3-4) at Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (3-4) Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp – Double-A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins Proud Member of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Southern League Champions 1996, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014 Friday April 13, 2018 – 7:05 p.m. Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville - Jacksonville, Florida. BayBears: RHP Ivan Pineyro (0-0, 4.15) vs. Shrimp: RHP Jeff Brigham (1-0, 0.00) Game #8 – Home Game #3 (2-0) Last Game: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp first baseman Eric Jagielo hit a two-run home run, and right-hander Nick Neidert went five innings for his first Southern League win to lead a 7-2 victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of 5,328 at the season’s first Budweiser Thirsty Thursday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Shortly after Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack threw the ceremonial first pitch to Jumbo Shrimp pitcher Max Duval, Jacksonville (3-4) took a lead in the bottom of the first inning. Designated hitter John Norwood hit a two-out infield single against BayBears right-hander Luis Pena (0-1), and first baseman Eric Jagielo homered to right field to make it 2-0. Mobile (3-4) answered in the top of the second inning against Jumbo Shrimp right-hander Nick Neidert (1-0). Left fielder Zach Gibbons hit a two-out single, stole second base and scored on right fielder Brendon Sanger’s RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, the Jumbo Shrimp got the run back. Center fielder Monte Harrison walked, stole second and third bases, and scored on right fielder Kyle Barrett’s RBI single to right field, extending a 3-1 lead. The teams traded lone runs in the fourth inning. BayBears shortstop Hutton Moyer singled, stole second base, advanced on catcher Michael Barash’s groundout and scored on Gibbons’ RBI single. Jumbo Shrimp catcher Rodrigo Vigil walked, went to third base on shortstop Chris Diaz’s single, and scored on Barrett’s groundout for a 4-2 Jumbo Shrimp edge. Neidert went five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Right-hander Jorgan Cavanerio worked around a double and walk in the sixth inning and lasted 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Left-hander Jose Quijada pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. After four walks, two wild pitches, a hit and an error led to three eighth-inning runs off BayBears left-hander Jonah Wesely, Jacksonville right-hander Marcus Crescentini pitched a perfect ninth inning. It was part of a night that saw Jacksonville’s first baseman go 2-for-5 with his homer and two runs batted in, in addition to sterling defensive plays at first base. He made back to back diving stops of grounders for the final two outs of the fifth inning, and also provided another diving stop in the ninth inning. Jagielo is hitting .261 and leads the Jumbo Shrimp with two home runs and six runs batted in. Jagielo is no stranger to the Southern League, having spent parts of the last two seasons with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A Affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds traded Jagielo to the Marlins during spring training on March 17, and has been Jacksonville’s primary first baseman this season. Brigham is Back: Tonight’s starting pitcher Jeff Brigham makes his Baseball Grounds debut. Brigham earned a victory in his first start of 2018 on Saturday April 7 in frigid temperatures against the Jackson Generals at The Ballpark at Jackson. Brigham tossed five scoreless innings scattering only two hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. He rode the momentum of Eric Jagielo’s 3 RBI in the first three innings to leave with a 3-0 lead, and Jacksonville won its first game of the season 3-2. Brigham was the only starting pitcher to earn a win in Jacksonville’s first series of the year at Jackson. The Green, Green Grass of Home: The Jumbo Shrimp are sure glad to be back at home on Florida’s First Coast. Last year Jacksonville was a rich home field advantage for the Shrimp, with the club posting a 43-27 record at the Baseball Grounds. The second half especially featured a home field advantage for the Shrimp, going 25-10 while losing only one home series in the second half en route to a second half South Division title. The Jumbo Shrimp were also 11-3 in home series last year at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Oh Hi BayBears: This is the first of four series this season between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. The BayBears will make a return trip to Jacksonville from May 17-21, while the two Jumbo Shrimp visits to Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile will be in the second half from July 4-7 and July 28-August 1. Last year Jacksonville had a winning record against Mobile, going 14-7 overall. The clubs split the two series at Hank Aaron Stadium 5-5, while the Jumbo Shrimp were 9-2 against the BayBears at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville last season. Home Opening Series Wins: The first series of the year in Jacksonville has been kind to the franchise in the Miami Marlins era of Jacksonville baseball (2009- present). In the previous nine home openers at the Baseball Grounds, Jacksonville has a record of 6-3, and Jacksonville has also gone 6-3 in terms of series wins and losses in the first home series during that time span. The last time Jacksonville lost a series during their first homestand was 2014, losing four of five games to the Huntsville Stars after winning the Opening Night game. Jacksonville has won three straight home opening series at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the Opening Day roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who are listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (2), Isan Diaz (8), RHP Nick Neidert (10), RHP Merandy Gonzalez (16), and RHP Pablo Lopez (24), who is currently on Jacksonville’s disabled list. All five of these prospects were acquired by the Marlins in trades within the past 12 months.
