His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short- season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with Jackson, will serve as hitting coach. LARA PROMOTED TO AA: INF Jordy Lara was promoted to AA Jackson on July 27. At the time of his promotion, Lara had a 17-game hit streak, batting .479 (34x71) with 21 runs scored, 8 doubles, 8 home runs, 24 RBI and 6 walks. He also hit safely in 24 of his final 26 games, batting .443 (47x107) with 27 runs scored, 11 doubles, 10 home runs, 29 RBI, 10 walks and 1 stolen base. Overall he hit .353 (141x399) with 77 runs scored, 26 doubles, 5 triples, 22 home runs, 80 RBI, 38 walks and 1 stolen base in 102 games with the Mavericks. As of July 28, Lara led the California League in hits (141) and total bases (243), while also ranking 2nd in average (.353), T2nd in RBI (80), 3rd in (.609), T3rd in home runs (22), runs scored (77) and extra-base hits, T4th in games (102), 6th in on-base percentage (.413) and 8th in doubles. Lara was named California League Player of the week three times: April 21-27, July 14-20 & July 21-27.

GENERALS PAY TRIBUNE TO THE LATE TONY GWYNN: The game of baseball not only lost one of its greatest players in June, but one of the best humanitarian’s baseball has ever known. Tony Gwynn, 54, lost his battle with cancer on June 16, 2014 and to honor Gwynn and his entire family the Jackson Generals are wearing special #19 patches on their home pinstripe jerseys. Tony’s Brother Chris, who played 10 seasons in the Major Leagues, is the Seattle Mariners’ Director of Player Development and has been in his current role since 2012. The Generals began wearing the black patch with the white numeral 19 on July 10th (pictured on the jersey of Dario Pizzano). The lefty-swinging Gwynn, nicknamed Mr. Padre, had a career .338 batting average, won eight batting titles and played in the Padres’ only two World Series. Gwynn collected 3,141 hits during a Hall of Fame career spanning 20 seasons, all of which spent with San Diego. The Jackson Generals are the -A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and have been affiliated with Seattle since 2007.

COACHING STAFF: After managing High Desert in 2013, James Horner will take over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Southern League, the Jackson Generals. Horner enters his 8th season with the Mariners (2005-10, 2013-current), but second as manager since returning to the organization prior to last season. Pitching coach Lance Painter returns to Jackson after spending the 2013 season with the High Desert Mavericks. Painter enters his 9th season with the Mariners, including his 4th with Jackson (2010-12). Entering his 4th season with the Mariners organization, Mike Kinkade will serve as the Generals hitting coach. RECAP: The Mavericks scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to tie the game 4-4 and won on a walkoff single by DH Burt Reynolds with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th as High Desert defeated Rancho Cucamonga 5-4 on Tuesday night. CF/RF Gabby Guerrero (2x4, 2 R, RBI, BB) recorded the team’s only multi-hit game, while Reynolds (1x4, RBI, BB), PH/C Tyler Marlette (1x1, 2 RBI) and 3B Bryan Brito (1x4, RBI) combined to drive in 4 of the team’s runs. Starter Brett Shankin (3.0,6,3,3,1,0) allowed 3 runs on 6 hits over 3.0 innings, but did not factor into the decision. LH Will Mathis (3.0,1,0,0,0,2) and RH Jochi Ogando (1.0,0,0,0,1,0) combined to hold the Quakes scoreless over 4.0 innings in relief. COACHING STAFF: The Mariners California League affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, will be managed by Eddie Menchaca, who spent the previous 3 seasons with Clinton. He enters his 6th season in the Mariners organization, including 4 as manager. Menchaca has led his squad to the postseason in each of the last 4 seasons, accumulating a 238-243 (.495) record. Pitching coach Andrew Lorraine enters his 1st season with High Desert after spending the last 2 seasons with Clinton. Hitting coach Max Venable begins his 1st season as coach in the Mariners organization. Venable appeared parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including stints with the Giants (1979-83), the Expos (1984), the Reds (1985-87), and the Angels (1989-91). Overall he batted .241 (337x1397) with 176 runs scored, 57 doubles, 17 triples, 18 home runs and 128 RBI in 727 career games in the Major Leagues. His son, Will, is currently an outfielder with the . O’Neill (3x6, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI), who was activated from the DL earlier in the day, hit his first career multi-home run game with a solo blast in the 6th inning and a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 14th. RF Chantz Mack (3x6, R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB) and SS (2x6, R, BB) combined to record 5 of the LumberKings 12 hits. Starter Blake Holovach (1.0,4,3,3,3,2) allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in the first inning, but did not factor into the decision. COACHING STAFF: Manager Scott Steinmann returns to lead the LumberKings after a four-year absence from the Midwest League. Steinmann was Clinton’s manager in 2009 and led them to a 69-68 record. He was originally assigned to be the hitting coach with short-A Everett, but was promoted to Clinton after Chris Prieto was named the Mariners Quality Control Coach. Pitching Coach Cibney Bello and Hitting Coach Brent Johnson make their MWL coaching debuts after being teammates on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers squad in 2005. Bello held the same title with AZL Mariners in 2013 and Johnson was the hitting coach in Pulaski. Geoff Swanson is the Athletic Trainer coming from Pulaski in 2013 and Taylor Nakamura is the performance specialist after being with Everett in 2013.
