Celebrating Years of Music A Serenade to Music “We are the music-makers And we are the dreamers of dreams…” (Arthur William Edgar O’Shaughnessy, Ode) The story of BBC Northern Ireland’s involvement in nurturing and broadcasting local musical talent is still in the making. This exhibition provides a revealing glimpse of work in progress at the BBC’s Community Archive in documenting the programmes and personalities who have brought music in all its different forms to life, and looks at how today’s broadcasters are responding to the musical styles and opportunities of a new century. It celebrates BBC NI’s role in supporting musical diversity and creative excellence and reflects changes in fashion, technology and society across 80 years of local broadcasting. “ Let us celebrate the way we were and the way we live now. Much has been achieved since 2BE’s first faltering (and scarcely heard) musical broadcast in 1924. Innovation has Let us celebrate the ways we will be... been a defining feature of every decade from early radio concerts in regional towns and country halls to the pioneering work of Sean O’Boyle in recording traditional music and Sam Hanna Bell’s 1950s programmes of Belfast’s Let us count the ways to celebrate. street songs. The broadcasts of the BBC Wireless Orchestra and its successors find their contemporary echo in the world-class performances of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC NI’s radio and television schedules continue to Let us celebrate.” reverberate to the diverse sounds of local jazz, traditional and country music, religious services, brass bands, choirs, (Roger McGough - Poems of Celebration) contemporary rock, pop and dance music.

Seagull Scene SSE Airtricity League First Division Season 2021 Vol. 37 No. 3 WELCOME TO THE CARLISLE BRAY WANDERERS FC I would like to welcome Colin Healy and his Cork City team and club officials to the Carlisle Grounds for this ROLL OF HONOUR evening’s encounter. FAI Cup Winners (2) Both teams lie in the bottom half of the table going into this game. Wanderers have drawn four and lost once 1990, 1999 while Cork have lost their last four league games. First Division Champions (3) Wanderers have had a bit of an injury crisis so far, 1985/86, 1995/96, 1999/00 particularly amongst the forwards, where Gary Shaw First Division runners-up (2) and Darragh Lynch have both been missed. Lynch has yet to feature this season. 1990/91, 1997/98 On the plus side it was great to see Charlie Gallagher Shield Winners (1) make his first team debut in Cobh last week. Charlie is 1995/96 the latest player to come through the Academy ranks at Bray to play for the first team. Charlie was top scorer for National League B Division Champions (2) the under 17s last season. 1991/92, 1998/99 Our Academy teams returned to training this week in Enda McGuill Cup (1) preparation for the season. Only teams up to under 18 2005 can train now so the under 19s must wait a bit longer to resume training. FAI Intermediate Cup Winners (2) 1955/56, 1957/58 The viewing figures for the live streaming service of Bray Wanderers two home games so far this season FAI Junior Cup Winners (2) have been quite good.

  • 222 1 Remembering the Famine
NOTES 1 Remembering the Famine 1. Speech by the Minister of State, Avril Doyle TD, Famine Commemoration Programme, 27 June 1995. 2. The text of a message from the British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, delivered by Britain’s Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, Veronica Sutherland, on Saturday 31 May 1997 at the Great Irish Famine Event, in Cork (British Information Services, 212). 3. Irish News, 4 February 1997. 4. The designation of the event is contested; some nationalists find the use of the word ‘famine’ offensive and inappropriate given the large amounts of food exported from Ireland. For more on the debate, see Kinealy, A Death-Dealing Famine: The Great Hunger in Ireland (Pluto Press, 1997), Chapter 1. 5. The Irish Times, 3 June 1995. 6. The most influential work which laid the ground for much subsequent revisionist writing was R. D. Crotty, Irish Agricultural Production (Cork University Press, 1996). 7. The most polished and widely read exposition of the revisionist interpretation was provided in Roy Foster, Modern Ireland, 1600–1972 (London, 1988). 8. Roy Foster, ‘We are all Revisionists Now’, in Irish Review (Cork, 1986), pp. 1–6. 9. Professor Seamus Metress, The Irish People, 10 January 1996. Similar arguments have also been expressed by Professor Brendan Bradshaw of Cambridge Univer- sity, a consistent – but isolated – opponent of revisionist interpretation. See, for example, Irish Historical Studies, xxvi: 104 (November 1989), pp. 329–51. 10. Christine Kinealy, ‘Beyond Revisionism’, in History Ireland: Reassessing the Irish Famine (Winter 1995). 11.
