WUF11 is being co-organized by Poland’s Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the Municipal Office of Katowice. During the launch they signed an agreement on the preparation of WUF11 in June 2022. The UN-Habitat Executive Director, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy, Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak, and the Mayor of Katowice, Marcin Krupa, made a joint video to mark the occasion. The river Káodnica is highly contaminated. It carries waters that are out of any Rawa catchment - qualitative class of purity over its length. Main impurities that cause and quantitative changes such poor quality of waters in this river are: biogenic substances, mineral substances (represented by chlorides Ⱥɧɚɥɿɡɭɽɬɶɫɹ ɞɨɜɝɨɬɟɪɦɿɧɨɜɢɣ ɜɩɥɢɜ ɩɪɨɦɢɫɥɨɜɨɝɨ ɜɢɤɨɪɢɫ- ɬɚɧɧɹɤɨɦɩɨɧɟɧɬɿɜɝɟɨɝɪɚɮɿɱɧɨɝɨɫɟɪɟɞɨɜɢɳɚ, ɹɤɟɩɪɢɡɜɟɥɨɞɨ and sulphates coming from coal-mine waters drained to ɣɨɝɨɞɟɝɪɚɞɚɰɿʀ. In particular, the 2016 United States presidential elections and Brexit vote in the United Kingdom have shown that the increased use of social media has raised popular nationalism (Whitmeyer 2002) to a whole new level. While Europe and other parts of the world have visibly become more globalized, the Northern Atlantic region has witnessed a contradictory tendency for the rise and spread of nationalist sentiment. Much of this phenomenon has been taking place on the internet where conditions of apparent anonymity created a fertile ground for uninhibited identity expressions and performances. From the United States to Poland, people have retreated to their stable, national identities as a way of coping with the various facets of liquid modernity, in which the need for networking pushes individuals to engage in community building by bonding with other individuals through shared emotions (Bauman 2006, 37).

Katowice is located in the Silesian Highlands, about 50 km on north from the Silesian Beskids (part of the Carpathian Mountains) and about 100 km on south-east from Sudetes Mountains. The population within the city limits is 308 724. It is the central district of the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia, with a population of 2 million. Katowice has been the capital of Silesian Voivodeship since its formation in 1999. www.gig.eu Public awareness of river valleys as public spaces Changes in last 6 years – most important experiences: Ślepiotka River revitalization - REURIS Project (2008 – 2012) „Pure Kłodnica” – voluntary action since 2011 Idea of Rawa River revitalization - 2014 www.gig.eu REURIS Project REURIS (REvitalisation of Urban RIver Spaces) has been dedicated to meeting the growing demand for attractive and accessible water-courses in city areas by developing sustainable river revitalisation tools through transnational cooperation. It was one of first attempts in Upper-Silesian conditions to involve local communities at all stages of the project implementation. The main aim of REURIS project was to implement strategies and activities at reconstruction of natural and cultural resources and management of urban river spaces.

THE FUTURE STARTS HERE Introduction Katowice is a unique city in Poland in terms of its dynamic transformation from an industrial region into a modern metropolitan area. We have focused on revitalisation, creating new recreational areas and the rapid development of culture and business tourism. The metamorphosis of Katowice has been recognised by UNESCO, which in 2015 awarded Katowice the title of UNESCO City of Music. This means that we now have the potential to organise the largest global events. We share the motto of the British SAS: „Who Dares Wins”. A few years ago, we started to focus on e-sport, which from today’s perspective has been well worth it. These decisions have had a huge impact on where we are today. The investments we have made are having a positive impact on the perception of the city and its image, and are noticeably improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. Worth noting is the transformation that has been taking place with respect to the heritage and rich history of region, which can be seen in the vast array of projects. A great example is the Culture Zone, which was established on the site of the former Katowice Coal Mine. In line with our Katowice 2030 City Development Strategy, we take actions to make our city: intelligent, innovative, integrated and international. In order to achieve these four values, we cooperate with residents, investors and various types of organisations. We know that only our joint efforts and engagement will allow us to create a modern city.
