KATOWICE... THE FUTURE STARTS HERE

Introduction

Katowice is a unique city in Poland in terms of its dynamic transformation from an industrial region into a modern metropolitan area. We have focused on revitalisation, creating new recreational areas and the rapid development of culture and business tourism. The metamorphosis of Katowice has been recognised by UNESCO, which in 2015 awarded Katowice the title of UNESCO City of Music. This means that we now have the potential to organise the largest global events. We share the motto of the British SAS: „Who Dares Wins”. A few years ago, we started to focus on e-sport, which from today’s perspective has been well worth it. These decisions have had a huge impact on where we are today. The investments we have made are having a positive impact on the perception of the city and its image, and are noticeably improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. Worth noting is the transformation that has been taking place with respect to the heritage and rich history of region, which can be seen in the vast array of projects. A great example is the Culture Zone, which was established on the site of the former Katowice Coal Mine.

In line with our Katowice 2030 City Development Strategy, we take actions to make our city: intelligent, innovative, integrated and international. In order to achieve these four values, we cooperate with residents, investors and various types of organisations. We know that only our joint efforts and engagement will allow us to create a modern city.

Katowice is the central city of the GZM, the first metropolitan association in Poland. This has a key impact on how the city is perceived within the entire metropolitan area. Qualified staff with high linguistic skills and the constantly growing real estate market make Katowice one of the most important business centres in Poland. On the other hand, the rapidly developing housing infrastructure, extensive recreational facilities and access to numerous green areas, which make up more than half of the city's area, provide attractive living conditions for residents.

Katowice has been selected as the host of the World Urban Forum (WUF) 2022, which will be an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences relating to the development and transformation of cities. We will draw knowledge and inspiration for further projects from it. It is worth adding that for the first time the event will be organised by a country from Central and . It is a great honour and prestige for Poland as well as an incredible promotion for the host city and it provides new opportunities for the entire region.

To sum up, Katowice is our joint, unique project, which we are developing thanks to our awareness of changes taking place in the world and following them.

Come to Katowice – for a change - and see for yourself how we are changing and how much we have to offer. See you soon.

Innovative social projects are being implemented in Katowice, often using modern technologies. In 2018, the KATOobywatel project was launched, which addresses the needs of residents as well as the challenges faced by cities in the 21st century. KATOobywatel includes apps, actions and campaigns involving residents in the joint care of the city, connecting many partners, including non-governmental organizations and business.

Thanks to smart city solutions, the local authorities managed to involve people in Katowice, to improve the city and make it green. Users of the 'NaprawmyTo.pl/katowice' app can point out problems that need to be fixed. In two years, more than 10,000 repairs have been made in this way, ranging from damaged infrastructure to safety and nature issues.

Another app allows residents to report new tree plantings. Thanks to ‘wCOP drzewo’, several hundred new trees are already growing in the city. Flower meadows have also been created in Katowice, which are not only attractive, but also enrich the urban ecosystem. People in Katowice helped to sow 50,000 m2 of meadow land, including in the very centre.

'The Clean Up Our Districts' campaign is held regularly in Katowice. Residents first report and choose the most polluted places, and then they clean them up together. Each campaign ends with a picnic, which is an opportunity to promote the circular photo: Shutterstock economy and the idea of zero waste.
