Bolivia Abstract The Department of La Paz has the largest number of wild potato species (Solanum Section Petota Solanaceae) in Bolivia, some of which are rare and threatened by extinction. Solanum achacachense, S. candolleanum, S. circaeifolium, S. okadae, S. soestii and S. virgultorum were all searched for in their type localities and new areas. Isolated specimens of S. achacachense were found in its type localities, while S. candolleanum was found in low density populations. Solanum circaeifolium was also found as isolated specimens or in low density populations in its type localities, but also in new areas. Solanum soestii and S. okadae were found in small, isolated populations. No specimen of S. virgultorum was found at all. The majority of the wild species searched for suffered the attack of pathogenic fungi. Interviews with local farmers revealed the main factors negatively affecting these species to be loss of habitat through urbanization and the use of the land for agriculture and forestry.

VACHER, EMMANUEL BRASIER DE THUY, MAXIMO LIBERMAN Todo vIajero que llega a las orillas del lago Titicaca puede observar fácilmente una modificación importante de la agricultura. A medida que uno se aproxima al lago, la densidad de la población aumenta considerablemente (a menudo superior a 100 habitantes por km 2 contra 30 algunos kilómetros antes). Los cultivos tienen un fuerte crecimiento y una precocidad de 2 a 3 meses con relación al resto del Altiplano; además, los rebaños de bovinos pacen generalmente en las aguas poco profundas del lago o reciben en las orillas su forraje de plantas acuáticas. Esta influencia tan visible del lago Titicaca en la agricultura condujo los. autores de la primera ley de imposición agraria en Bolivia a dividir todo el Altiplano en una zona bajo influencia lacustre y otra zona fuera de la influencia lacustre. Es fácil comprobar la existencia de dos agriculturas diferentes, pero sus causas y la zonación han sido poco estudiadas. Por consiguiente, trataremos en este capítulo de identificar los principales factores de modificación de la agricultura, ligados a la presencia del lago, de evaluar su intensidad, sus zonas de acción y cuáles son sus consecuencias mayores en la agricultura. La zona de estudio que hemos considerado corresponde a la orilla boliviana del Huiñaimarca. Los resultados que presentamos no son ni exhaustivos, ni totalmente generalizados, pero permitirán, lo esperamos, comprender mejor la agricultura del borde del lago Titicaca. Influencia del lago Titicaca en algunos factores agroecológicos importantes Hemos considerado principalmente la influencia del lago sobre el clima y el suelo, factores determinantes de la agricultura, así como sobre la producción de macrofitas forrajeras.

    Municipios en Bolivia por departamento y provincia -Hay 327 municipios en Bolivia, pero 10 de ellos entrarán recién en plena vigencia con la elección de sus autoridades en abril de 2010. Hasta ahora se habla de 327 municipios. El último municipio creado el 23 de diciembre es Alto Beni. Se llevaron a cabo ya siete elecciones municipales. Fuentes: CNE, INE, FAM y Centro de Documentación e Información CEDOIN/GTZ Bolivia tiene 9 departamentos, 112 provincias y 327 municipios, de los cuales 187 son indígenas (57%), según investigaciones llevadas a cabo por Xavier Albó y Carlos Romero (Autonomías Indígenas y su realidad en la nueva Constitución, GTZ/PADEP, 2009). Entre 2005 y 2009 se han creado otros 10 municipios, los cuales tendrán plena vigencia con la elección de sus autoridades en los comicios del 4 de abril de 2010. Los municipios llegarán, entonces, a un total de 337 en Bolivia. Las elecciones municipales y prefecturales de abril marcan un hito en la historia boliviana ya que se desarrollarán bajo el paraguas legal de la nueva Constitución Política del Estado. Asimismo, once municipios que optaron por declararse municipios indígenas autónomos, en la consulta del 6 diciembre de 2009 (llevada a cabo junto con las elecciones generales) elegirán a sus alcaldes y concejales por primera vez de acuerdo a sus saberes tradicionales. La elección de las autoridades será transitoria hasta que se aprueben sus cartas orgánicas municipales, conocidas también como estatutos. 1.     Government of Bolivia Bolivia Coca Cultivation Survey June 2007 Bolivia Coca Survey for 2006 PREFACE The evidence from the 2006 Bolivia Coca Survey sends mixed signals. Overall, there is an 8% increase in cultivation over 2005 for a total of 27,500 hectares. Dire forecasts have not been borne out. Nevertheless, there are warning signs that should be heeded. Under Bolivian law, 12,000 hectares may be grown for traditional consumption or other legal uses: this Survey shows that the limit was exceeded in the Yungas of La Paz where most of the cultivation usually takes place. At the same time there has been a dramatic (19%) increase in the Chapare region, including more than 2,300 hectares of coca being grown in national parks in the Tropics of Cochabamba – a threat to the precious eco-system of the Amazon forests. The good news from this same region is that the amount of land devoted to the cultivation of alternative crops – such as bananas, pineapple, and palm heart – now exceeds the area used to grow coca. There are signs of hope that licit crops can help liberate vulnerable communities from poverty. Nevertheless, the considerable increase in seizures and the displacement of drug production to areas outside the coca growing areas, as reported by the Bolivian drug control police, demonstrates the need for sustained drug law enforcement of the Bolivian Government. Bolivia’s drug policy is in the spotlight. The Government needs to reassure the world that its support for coca growers will not lead to an increase in cocaine production.

It is the most extensive area of high plateau on Earth outside of Tibet. The bulk of the Altiplano lies in Bolivia, but the remaining parts lie in Peru, Chile and Argentina. La Paz and El Alto with over one-million inhabitants are the largest combined cities in Latin America inhabited by indigenous Americans and the highest major metropolis in the world.
