Filmový festival pracujících1 Dnes film už bude slúžiť ľudu a vravieť o tom, čo mu blízke. Dnes filmy už len pre ľud budú, budú mu radiť, viesť ho k výške. Dnes už to nie zbraň kapitálu zábava planá: skrátiť chvíľu. 1 Citovský, František (1949): I. Filmový festival pracujících.

  • FILM CENSORSHIP in 1943-1946 by Roberto Gulì
FILM CENSORSHIP IN 1943-1946 by Roberto Gulì In the historical era in Italy between 1943 and the immediate post-war period, the so-called temporary constitutional period, the Second World War was proceeding towards its dramatic conclusion, generating upheavals and clamorous coalition changes. The intensifying war on Italian territory had, of course, repercussions on the cinema industry: films were increasingly difficult to distribute, and cinema revision proceeded at a slow pace. Following the Allies’ offensive, Italy was broken in two: the South went to the Anglo- Americans, who dictated their propaganda, while Fascist censorship was restored in the Republic of Salò. Even before the end of the war, the movie revision system in Italy gradually got back into the swing of operations, but it had to face a past which was still too close for comfort, as troublesome as it was difficult to cleanse. The PWB The positive outcome of the “Italy campaign”, started by the Allies with the landing in Sicily on 10 July 1943 (preceded by operations in the Pelagie Isles and in Pantelleria in June), couldn’t depend entirely on military action, which however lead to a fast death for the already moribund Mussolini government on 25 July 1943. For the Anglo-Americans’ ambition of a progressive “defascistisation” of Italy (and of the whole Europe) to be realised, war using arms had to be flanked by ideas, a so-called “psychological war”. And in order to implement effective war propaganda, the Allies had to take control of the Italian media. Even before the start of military operations, the Anglo-American government created for this purpose the Psychological Warfare Branch (PWB), that was aimed to manage the Italian media.

This was the fourth consecutive year of growth in the number of French films scheduled (359 in 1995, 379 in 1996, and 404 in 1997). 91 films were programmed on Telepiu, and 390 on the free TV channels. Italian TV channels also devoted a larger share of their line-up to French fare. Of the more than 12,000 movie broadcasts, French films were aired 955 times, taking out 7.8% of film slots, showing an increase of 3.4 points compared with 1997. Their share of movie airtime rose significantly on the free TV channels, up from 1.9% to 5.3%. Traditionally giving greatest exposure to French films, RAI 3 bested past records this year. With 107 titles programmed, it outstripped even Telepiu, the specialist movie channel, in which Canal Plus had recently acquired a stake. The three public broadcasters stepped up the number of French films offered in 1998, demonstrated by an increase on RAI 1 from 41 titles broadcast in 1997 to 77 in 1998, and on RAI 2, from 30 to 32 titles. Of all the commercial channels, Rete 4 had always been the most oriented to French films. This year, it broadcast 84 titles, 38 more than the previous year.

  • Neorealism, History, and the Children's Film: Vittorio De Sica's
Neorealism, History, and The Children’s Film: Vittorio de Sica’s The Children Are Watching Us reconsidered BERT CARDULLO Yale University Abstract Vittorio De Sica used a child protagonist for the first time, not in his neorealist masterpiece Shoeshine (1946), but in his first truly serious film, The Children Are Watching Us (1943), which examines the impact on a young boy’s life of his mother’s extramarital affair with a family friend. The Children Are Watching Us proved to be a key work, thematically as well as stylistically, in De Sica’s directing career. In its thematic attempt to reveal the underside of Italy’s moral life, this film was indicative of a rising new vision in Italian cinema. And in exhibiting semi-documentary qualities by being shot partially on location, as well as by using nonprofessional actors in some roles, The Children Are Watching Us was a precursor of the neorealism that would issue forth after the liberation of occupied Rome. Keywords: Vittorio De Sica; The Children Are Watching Us; Italian neorealism; children’s films; Shoeshine; Bicycle Thieves.
