Speech and Language Virtual Learning Social Studies Vocabulary May 2020 Social Studies Vocabulary Lesson Lesson: May 2020 Objective/Learning Target: The student will learn basic Social Studies Curriculum Vocabulary and apply these skills in activities provided. Background Information: Semantic skills involve understanding and being able to use vocabulary to describe and categorize the items in the world around us. This lesson focuses on Social Studies Vocabulary for directions on a map. Word Targets: Map, Globe, Cardinal Directions, North, South, East, West Let’s Get Started: Here are the definitions for these words. Map: This is a picture or drawing of a land area. Globe: This is a model of the Earth that is round. Cardinal directions: Cardinal directions or cardinal points are the four main directions or points of the compass: north, east, south and west. These direction are also written in short form as N, E, S and W. North and south are directed towards the north and south poles of the Earth. The Earth's rotation defines east and west. North: This is the direction that is the opposite of south. South: This is the direction that is the opposite of north. East: This is the direction that is the opposite of west. West: This is the direction that is the opposite of east. Remember: The four directions are : North, South, East and West North and South face each other. East and West face each other. West is to the left of north and east is to the right of north. Answer: The sun always rises from the east and sets in the west. So if you know which direction the sun rises in the morning, that is the east. If you stand facing east, exactly opposite east and behind you will be west. Stretch your hands horizontally. Your left hand will face north, and right hand will face south. We also use tools called a compass and GPS to tell us what direction we are going. Question: Why do we need maps and cardinal directions? Answer: We use these when - 1. We are driving and need to know what way to go. 2. When we give someone directions to go someplace. 3. When we are trying to find where places are. 4. When we are reading a map. 5. There are 4 activities you could do. 1. You could go to the pool to swim. 2. You could go to the playground. 3. You could go to the lake for some fishing. 4. You could go to McDonalds for lunch. Use the compass to find which direction you need to go to get to the different places. Tell someone in your house what direction you would go. Check your work: 1. To get to the pool you would go east. 2. To get to the playground you would go south. 3. To get to the lake you would go north. 4. To get to McDonalds you would go east. This one is a little harder. We live in the state of Missouri. Which direction would you go to get to the following states? 1. Iowa 2. Arkansas 3. Kansas 4. Kentucky Check your work: We live in the state Missouri. Which direction would you go to get to the following states? 1. Iowa - North 2. Arkansas - South 3. Kansas - West 4. Kentucky - East Tricky Stuff: Most of the time you will not go in a straight line to get somewhere. You might go a direction that is between north, south, east, and west. When you do this you would look and the two directions and starting with either north or south combine the words: (northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast.) Northwest Northeast Southwest Southeast Warning!! Sometimes your directions will change with the roads or change roads themselves. The road might start out going north and curve east or you might go south on one road and turn west onto another.
