Transworld Non-Fiction Jul-Dec 2021 NON-FICTION CATALOGUE JULY - DECEMBER 2021 1 Rebuild How to Do Business Better Mary Portas Since the pandemic, many businesses have gone under. But some businesses are positively buoyant, despite the odds being stacked against them. Why is that? Rebuild is a life raft, a vital guide to how we reset and build back better. Over the past thirty years the business of what we buy has been dominated by the biggest, fastest and cheapest. But those values no longer resonate. We've come to realize that more doesn't equal better. Good business is now about putting people and planet before profit. The post-pandemic era is all about care, respect and understanding the implications of what we're doing. This 'Kindness Economy' is a new value system that means in order to thrive businesses must rediscover their true purpose, and fuse brand magnetism with social progress. We're not simply consuming anymore, we're buying into something. Which means that, whether physical or digital, the most important space that any business can now occupy is the space in peoples' hearts. Full of expert insight, Rebuild is about resetting the dial. It gives businesspeople pause for thought and the practical tools to build back post- pandemic and speaks to anyone who votes with the pound in their pocket, who with social progress in mind wants to spend their money differently and better. Mary Portas is one of the UK's most high-profile businesswomen. After making her name transforming Harvey Nichols into London's sexiest fashion destination, Mary July 2021 launched her own retail consultancy, Portas, which works with 9781787635166 clients ranging from Louis Vuitton to Sainsbury's. She has been Demy Octavo a regular on our TV screens, advised the government on the £14.99 : Trade Paperback future of high streets and developed a fashion label. Her 204 pages proudest achievement to date is the creation of twenty-six Mary's Living & Giving shops for Save the Children. She is the author of Shop Girl and Work Like a Woman. 2 The Authority Gap Why women are still taken less seriously than men, and what we can do about it Mary Ann Sieghart Based on new, original research and interviews with pioneering women including Baroness Hale, Mary Beard and Caitlin Moran, this is a fresh feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic sexism, perfect for fans of Invisible Women. Imagine living in a world in which you were routinely patronized by women. Imagine having your views ignored or your expertise frequently challenged by them. Imagine trying to speak up in a meeting, only to be talked over by female colleagues. Imagine subordinates resisting you as a boss, merely because of your gender. Imagine people always addressing the woman you are with before you. Now imagine a world in which the reverse of this is true. The Authority Gap provides a startling perspective on the unseen bias at work in our everyday lives, to reveal the scale of the gap that still persists between men and women. July 2021 Marshalling a wealth of data with precision and insight, and 9780857527561 based on interviews with pioneering women including Royal Octavo Baroness Hale, Mary Beard and Janet Yellen, this is a fresh £16.99 : Hardback feminist take on how to address and counteract systemic 384 pages sexism in ways that benefit us all. Mary Ann Sieghart spent 20 years as Assistant Editor and columnist at The Times and won a large following for her columns on politics, economics, feminism, parenthood and life in general. She has presented many programmes on BBC Radio 4, such as Start the Week, Profile, Analysis and One to One. She chaired the revival of The Brains Trust on BBC2 and recently spent a year as a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. In the beginning was the earth... From the Paleozoic volcanoes that stained its soil, to the Saxons who occupied it, to the Tudors who traded its wool, to the Land Girls of wartime, John Lewis-Stempel charts a sweeping, lyrical history of Woodston: the quintessential English farm. With his combined skills of farmer and historian, Lewis-Stempel digs deep into written records, the memories of relatives, and the landscape itself to celebrate the farmland his family have been bound to for millennia. Through Woodston's life, we feel the joyful arrival of oxen ploughing; we see pigs rootling in the medieval apple orchard; and take in the sharp, drowsy fragrance of hops on Edwardian air. He draws upon his wealth of historical knowledge and his innate sense of place to create a passionate, fascinating biography of farming in England. Woodston not only reminds us of the rural riches buried beneath our feet but of our shared roots that tie us to the land. July 2021 John Lewis-Stempel is a writer and farmer. His books include 9780857525796 the Sunday Times bestsellers The Running Hare and The Wood. Royal Octavo He is the only person to have won the Wainwright Prize for £20.00 : Hardback Nature Writing twice, with Meadowland and Where Poppies Blow. 352 pages In 2016 he was Magazine Columnist of the Year for his column in Country Life. What causes the placebo effect? What is phantom limb pain? Why do we experience pain, even after we've healed? We're currently experiencing a Renaissance in pain science. In recent years our understanding of pain has altered so radically it's fair to say that everything we thought we knew about pain is wrong. As Dr Monty Lyman reveals, we misunderstand pain - with harmful consequences. Exploring cutting-edge research and encompassing phantom aches to persistent pain, and interviews with survivors of torture as well as those who have never felt pain, Dr Lyman not only provides hope for reducing and managing pain but takes us to a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. This is the untold story of pain - our most elusive feeling. Dr Monty Lyman is a doctor and research fellow at the University of Oxford. His first book, The Remarkable Life of the Skin, was shortlisted for the 2019 Royal Society Science Book Prize, was a Radio 4 Book of the Week and a Sunday Times Book of the Year. Instead, it is driving us apart. In the three decades since the end of the Cold War, global leaders have been integrating the world's economy, transport and communications, breaking down borders in the hope of making war impossible. In doing so, they have unwittingly created a formidable arsenal of weapons for new kinds of conflict and the motivation to keep fighting. Troublingly, we are now seeing rising conflict at every level, from individuals on social media all the way up to nation-states in entrenched stand-offs. The past decade has seen a new antagonism between the US and China; an inability to co- operate on global issues such as climate change or pandemic response; and a breakdown in the distinction between war and peace, as overseas troops are replaced by sanctions, cyberwar and the threat of large migrant flows. As a leading authority on international relations, Mark Leonard has been inside many of the rooms where our futures, at every level of society, are being decided - from Facebook HQ and facial-recognition labs in China to presidential palaces and remote military installations.

MINSHEW: There were literally days where I had a “no” over breakfast, and “no” over a 10:30 AM coffee, a “no” over lunch. Disinterest at 2:00 PM , somebody who left a meeting early at 4:00. And then I would go to drinks and feel like I was being laughed out of the room. And when we finally raised our seed round, I went back and counted. It was both painful and gratifying at the same time, looking at all those names, and thinking, “I remember that ‘no,’ I remember that ‘no,’ I remember that ‘no’”—and they sting; every one stings. HOFFMAN: Today, the Muse serves users in the millions. Kathryn raised $16 million last year—and her tale is the origin story of most great startups. So if you’re hearing a chorus of “no”s, you should look for other signs that you’re onto something. I believe the best ideas often appear laughable at first glance. [THEME MUSIC] HOFFMAN: I’m Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, partner at Greylock, and your host. I have a theory that the best business ideas often appear laughable at first glance. The lesson for entrepreneurs goes deeper than the pat advice that you shouldn’t take “no” for answer. You should expect to take “no” for an answer.

  • Rethinking the Participatory Web Final
Preprint version of Stevenson, Michael. 2014. “Rethinking the Participatory Web: A History of HotWired’s ‘New Publishing Paradigm,’ 1994–1997.” New Media & Society, October. doi: 10.1177/1461444814555950. Title Rethinking the participatory web: A history of HotWired’s ‘new publishing paradigm,’ 1994-1997. Author Michael Stevenson University of Amsterdam [email protected] Abstract This article critically interrogates key assumptions in popular web discourse by revisiting an early example of web ‘participation.’ Against the claim that Web 2.0 technologies ushered in a new paradigm of participatory media, I turn to the history of HotWired, Wired magazine’s ambitious web-only publication launched in 1994. The case shows how debates about the value of amateur participation vis-à-vis editorial control have long been fundamental to the imagination of the web’s difference from existing media. It also demonstrates how participation may be conceptualized and designed in ways that extend (rather than oppose) 'old media' values like branding and a distinctive editorial voice. In this way, HotWired's history challenges the technology-centric change narrative underlying Web 2.0 in two ways: first, by revealing historical continuity in place of rupture, and, second, showing that 'participation' is not a uniform effect of technology, but rather something constructed within specific social, cultural and economic contexts. Keywords web history, participation, Web 2.0, cyberculture, digital utopianism, Wired !1 Introduction In the mid-2000s, a series of popular accounts celebrating the web’s newfound potential for participatory media appeared, from Kevin Kelly’s (2005) proclamation that active audiences were performing a ‘bottom-up takeover’ of traditional media and Tim O’Reilly’s (2005) definition of ‘Web 2.0’ to Time’s infamous 2006 decision to name ‘You’ as the person of the year (Grossman, 2006).
