Årsmelding 2018 2 Norsk PEN Årsmelding 2018 2 Norsk PEN Når ytringsfriheten utfordres Rammer og oppgaver for Norsk PENs arbeid forteller om en verden som i økende grad utfordrer menneskerettigheter og ytringsfrihet. Norge påvirkes av verden der ute. Vi er en del av det globale fellesskapet og må aktivt vokte utviklingen, både hjemme og internasjonalt. Årsmelding 2018 5 Leder av Komiteen for fengslede forfattere, Brit Bildøen, har fungert som observatør i hele perioden. Arbeidsutvalget har avholdt 7 møter i perioden. 1.3 VALGKOMITEEN Valgkomiteen har bestått av Ann-Magrit Austenå (leder), Jørgen Lorentzen, Dag Larsen og Nuray Y. Gullestad. 1.4 UTVALG OG KOMITEER OPPNEVNT AV STYRET Komiteen for fengslede forfattere: Brit Bildøen (leder), Mari Moen Holsve, Johanne Fronth-Nygren, Øivind Hånes og Jørgen Lorentzen. Tyrkiautvalget: William Nygaard (leder), Brit Bildøen, Eugene Schoulgin, Ragnar Næss, Jørgen Lorentzen, Ragnar Næss leder diskusjonen i programmet Undertrykkelse, Anders Heger, Hege Newth, Øivind Hånes og Carl splittelse, kampvilje.     Appeal for a Worldwide Reading for Democracy and Media Freedom in Zimbabwe on 9 th September 2007 The human rights abuses in Zimbabwe go back to the early 80s, when Robert Mugabe implemented the Gukurahundi operation - the bloody murder of more than 20.000 Ndebele people. Since 2000 he has been responsible for the eviction of white farmers from their land, actions which have led to corn shortages and, consequently, to terrible famine. During the Murambatsvina (filth removal) campaign of 2005, Mugabe responded to the opposition's demonstrations by having several slums bulldozed. Hundreds of opposition members and dissidents have been arrested, kidnapped or tortured. A general ban on demonstrations has been in force since February 2007. The freedom of the press is extremely limited and there is discrimination against foreign media. Mugabe influenced the election by means of violence and absolute control in such a way that fear was caused to everyone who voted for the opposition. In mid-March 2007 Zimbabwe's most important opposition party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, was arrested during a protest rally and later severely beaten in custody. Only a decade ago Zimbabwe had been one of the richest and most developed countries in Africa, with the highest educational standards on the continent and a literacy rate of almost 85%. Over recent years Mugabe has led his country to economic collapse and his people into bitter poverty. Officially, Zimbabwe's inflation rate is 3700%, the highest in the world. The unemployment rate is 80%. With an average life expectancy of 34 years for women and 37 years for men, Zimbabwe has become the country with the lowest life expectancy in the world.

    Turkish Publishers Association 2012 “Freedom of Thought and Expression Awards” REPORT ON FREEDOM TO PUBLISH (June 2011-2012) /Turkey 2012 “Freedom of Thought and Expression Award” Ceremony Speech This year passed with one heart-wrenching incident after another regarding the freedom of thought and expression. Arrests of writers, publishers, journalists and intellectuals; prohibitions directed at the freedom to publish; implementations that amount to censure and pressures that would lead to auto-censuring reached previously unseen dimensions. We saw books, without no legal conviction against them, displayed alongside guns as evidence of terrorist activity, just like the days of the 12th of September coup d’etat. Even unpublished book manuscripts and draft translations were presented as organizational documents. Still further, lists of books were counted among evidence of criminality. There is a printing press owner convicted to a prison term because of a book he printed, even though no such crime exists in the Penal Code, and there are graphic designers on trial for doing the layout of the annual calendar prepared by their publishing house. Articles 6 and 7 of the Anti-terror Law have been implemented with the widest scope of interpretation and applied against any opposition. The number of journalists under arrest reached over a hundred, and the number of arrested party-workers, academics, students and lawyers is now over a thousand. Regardless of the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, many articles of the Turkish Penal Code continues to be implemented in a manner restrictive of freedom of thought. The infamous Article 301 continues to be invoked for prosecution.
