In the air surveillance programme concentrations of artificial radionuclides are monitored in the air close to the ground. In 1987, air dust samples were collected in Nurmijärvi, 40 km north of Helsinki and in Rovaniemi. When necessary, sampling was also launched in Helsinki. Several radionuclides originating from the accident in Chernobyl in 1987 could still be detected in air dust samples. The con centrations of the prevailing nuclides 134Cs and 137Cs were stable and there was no significant difference between winter and summer. Fresh fission nuclides were detected in March and August. A sharp decrease in the amounts of radioactive substances de posited was noted at all the 18 sampling stations as against 1986. The total annual amounts of deposited 137Cs varied at different stations in 1987 from 7.7 Bq/m2 (Rovaniemi) to 1500 Bq/m2 (Kauhava) and those of »° Sr in 1986 from 4.7 Eq/m2 (Tai valkoski) to 590 Bq/m2 (Kuhmo) and in 1987 from 1.4 Bq/m2 (Iva lo) to 38 Bq/m2 (Kuhmo). -

Marjukka Mäkelä and Ilsa Lottes 4. Highlights of Reproductive Health in Finland Our definition of reproductive health focuses on issues and problems related to pregnancy and childbearing. Thus, to evaluate reproductive health care in a country, we need to examine the extent to which quality maternal care and family planning services and information are provided to all women; the availability of safe and effective contraceptives; and the prevalence and treatment of infertility problems. Important indicators of reproductive health are maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates; rates and types of contraceptive use; abortion rates and unwanted and unplanned pregnancy rates; and morbidity and mortality rates due to abortion and genital mutilation. Other measures of reproductive health are general fertility rate, average age of mothers at birth of first child, average length of hospital stay for new mothers, and prevalence and duration of breast-feeding. Family planning, contraceptive use and abortion deal with both sexual and reproductive health and are discussed elsewhere in this book (e.g., Chapters 5, 14, and 21). Family planning services are provided free of charge by local health centres as a part of Finland’s universal government subsidised primary care service. Contraceptive prevalence rates are high and abortion rates low by international comparison, and illegal abortions occur rarely if at all. The issue of female genital mutilation (FGM) has come up only during the 1990s for public discussion due to the recent influx of African immigrants. The general criminal law makes FGM as physical violation illegal in Finland, and these operations cannot be performed as part of the public health services. -

The beauty of the country lies especially in the extensive forests, and in the sin- gular profusion of lakes. It is most apparent in the large lake district, and in the magnificent wa- 3 terways of Lake Saima. Here the admirer of na~ fure and the tourist receives a never to be forgot- ten impression. Here the tourist, who has visited different parts of the country may exclaim: „The chain of the Saima lakes is the most wonderful thing I have ever seen; here is the northern para- dise of hills, forests, and lakes." But as a boat trip along this chain of lakes, with its many branches extending for miles in all directions, demands too much of the tourist's pre- cious time, he must satisfy himself by experiencing the best part of all by undertaking the journey from Savonlinna via Varkaus to Kuopio, from the border of Olof's Castle to the base of the stately Puijo Hill. -
