Berliner paläobiologische Abhandlungen 10 321-330 Berlin 2009-11-11 First three-dimensionally preserved in situ record of an aptychophoran ammonite jaw apparatus in the Jurassic and discussion of the function of aptychi Günter Schweigert Abstract: A unique specimen of the microconch ammonite Lingulaticeras planulatum Berckhemer in Ziegler, 1958 comes from a tempestite bed within the Upper Jurassic lithographic limestones of Scham- haupten in Franconia (Painten Formation, uppermost Kimmeridgian). The shell is unique because it retains the complete jaw apparatus in the body chamber. The articulation of the Lamellaptychus and the corresponding upper beak are well preserved. The function of the aptychus is discussed in general, and an operculum function is thought to be unlikely. The formation of strongly calcified aptychi in aspidoceratids and some oppeliid ammonoids is interpreted as an added ballast weight to stabilize the conch for swimming in the water column. Keywords: Ammonites, aptychus, preservation, functional morphology, Upper Jurassic, lithographic lime- stones, Franconia, Germany Zusammenfassung: Ein einzigartig erhaltenes Exemplar des mikroconchen Ammoniten Lingulaticeras planulatum Berckhemer in Ziegler, 1958 aus einer Tempestitlage des oberjurassischen Plattenkalks von Schamhaupten in Franken (Painten-Formation, oberstes Kimmeridgium) enthält noch den vollständigen Kieferapparat in seiner Wohnkammer.Es zeigt die perfekte Artikualation des Lamellaptychus mit dem dazu- gehörenden Oberkiefer. Die Funktion des Aptychus wird allgemein diskutiert und eine Deckelfunktion für unwahrscheinlich gehalten. Die Ausbildung stark verkalkter Aptychen wie in Aspidoceraten und manchen Oppeliiden wird als zusätzliches Tariergewicht gedeutet, um das Gehäuse in starker bewegtem Wasser zu stabilisieren. These layers occur in Lower Oxfordian (cordatum ammonite zone) to Middle Oxfordian (plicatilis zone) clays and silty clays deposited in outer platform environments. In the Paris Basin, a thick bentonite (10–15 cm), identified in boreholes and in outcrop, is dominated by dioctahedral smectite (95%) with trace amounts of kaolinite, illite and chlorite. In contrast, five bentonites identified in the Subalpine Basin, where burial diagenesis and fluid circulation were more important, are composed of a mixture of kaolinite and regular or random illite/smectite mixed-layer clays in variable proportions, indicating a K-bentonite. In the Subalpine Basin, a 2–15 cm thick bentonite underlain by a layer affected by sulphate–carbonate mineralization can be correlated over 2000 km2. -
A Review of the Classification of Jurassic Aspidoceratid Ammonites – the Superfamily Aspidoceratoidea

Abstract. The aspidoceratid ammonites have been traditionally included in the superfamily Perisphinctoidea. However, the basis of this is unclear for they bear unique combinations of characters unknown in typical perisphinctoids: (1) the distinct laevaptychus, (2) stout shells with high growth rate of the whorl section area, (3) prominent ornamentation with tubercles, spines and strong growth lines running in parallel over strong ribs, (4) lack of constrictions, (5) short to very short bodychamber, and (6) sexual dimorphism characterized by minia- turized microconchs and small-sized macroconchs besides the larger ones, including changes of sex during ontogeny in many cases. Considering the uniqueness of these characters we propose herein to raise the family Aspidoceratidae to the rank of a superfamily Aspi- doceratoidea, ranging from the earliest Late Callovian to the Early Berriasian Jacobi Zone. The new superfamily includes two families, Aspidoceratidae (Aspidoceratinae, Euaspidoceratinae, Epipeltoceratinae and Hybonoticeratinae), and Peltoceratidae (Peltoceratinae and Gregoryceratinae nov. subfam.). STIPANICIC', G. E. G. WESTERMANN 2 and A. C. RJCCARDI3 ABSTRACT: Oxfordian Iitho- and biostratigraphy of the Chilean and Argentine Andes is reviewed (P. N. Stipanicic). Within the Chacay Group, the Lower to basal Upper Oxfordian La Manga Formation, below, mostly detrital and biogenic, and the Upper Oxfordian Au- quilco Formation, above, mainly chemical, are distinguished. The La Manga Formation (with Gryphaea calceola lumachelle) is rich in ammonite faunas, particularly of thc upper Cordatum to lower Canaliculatum Zones. In Neuquén and Mendoza provinces of Argentina, the Pli- catilis Zone or Middle Oxfordian has yielded Perísphinctes spp., Euaspidoceras spp., Aspido- ceras spp., together with Mayaítes (Araucanites ) stípanícfcí, M. (A.) reyesi, and M. (A.) mulai, Westermann et Riccardi subgen. et spp. nov. The first find of Mayaitidae outside the Indo-Pacific province is discussed in light of _plate-tectonic theory. Oxfordian Idoceratids (Ammonoidea) and Their Relation to Perisphinctes Proper

The subgenus Nebrodites (Passendorjeria) is supposed to be the ancestor of N. (Mesosimoceras), whilst N. (Enayites) subgen. n. of N. (Nebrodites) and possibly of Idoceras planula group. Both genera appear to be of European origin. Differentiation of Mediterranean and Submediterran.ean peris phinctidae appears questionable. INTRODUCTION In 1973 one of the co-authors (W. Brochwicz-Lewiilski, 1973) proposed a new subgenus Nebrodites (Passendorferia) for Middle Oxfordian forms interpreted as descendants of Mediterranean Kranaosphinctes cyrilli-me thodii group and ancestors of Nebrodites proper; the Idoceras planula group was assumed to be an off-shoot of the evolutionary line. Subsequent collecting gave several Passendorferia and Passendorferia-like forms from the Oxfordian of Poland, Switzerland (Gygi, pers. inf.), Spain (Sequeiros, 1974) and Bulgaria (Sapunov, in press). Moreover, ancestral forms of the Idoceras planula group were reported from the Bimammatum Zone of the F. R. G. (Nitzopoulos, 1974). These finds made it possible to draw some conclusions concerning the h~tory of these Mediterranean perisphinctids and their relationship to the Submediterranean ones. The material described comprises forms from authors' G. KU'lesza (Br, Kl) and Dr. J. Liszkowski's (L) collections housed at the Warsaw University as well as others from the Geological Museum of Sofia Univer sity (Bulgaria) and Geological Museum of the Polish Academy of Sciences at Cracow. -

Studováni byli především amoniti z jurských vápenců na lokalitách Brno-Hády a Olomučany. Přesné stáří jurských vrstev na těchto lokalitách, především v měřítku amonitových zón a subzón, nebylo doposud jednoznačně určeno. Vzhledem k tomu, že amoniti z těchto lokalit byli zpracovávaní naposledy před mnoha dekádami a poznání jejich taxonomie a biostratigrafie vyznamně pokročilo, vyvstala potřeba provést revizi. Na předešlé výzkumy bylo navázáno moderním zpracováním amonitů zohledňujícím vnitrodruhovou variaci a sexuální dimorfismus. Soubor studovaných amonitů je tvořen z části historickými nálezy uloženými v univerzitních a muzejních sbírkách a z části soudobými nálezy autora, jeho kolegů a místních sběratelů. -

NOTE ON THE AMMONITE — BEARING BEDS IN THE VARIOUS LOCALITIES OF TURKEY - PART ONE: ANKARA REGION Mükerrem TÜRKÜNAL Mineral Research and Exploration Institute of Turkey INTRODUCTION While working on «The Mono- graphic Revision of the Ammonites Fa- una of Turkey» (to be published later), the author has prepared a note on the Ammonite-bearing beds of Turkey. In this note are assembled the data of the available literature on this subject with the listing of fossil names as given by the authors; the synonyms are given here only for a few well-known species. In the Monography, each of these fos- sils will be fully discussed and all the synonyms of the fossils will be given. In the present note, we are beginning with the beds of the Ankara region. The other localities will be the subject of the following notes. LOCALITY : ANKARA In this district, there are several beds known from the early works. The most important ones will be listed below. A - Balkuyumcu. — In 1887, Tchihatcheff (10) studied first this Jurassic outcrop and found concave-fractured limestone. This limestone contains : A. tortisulcatus (= Sowerbyceras tortisulcatum D'Orb.) A. ardennensis (= Peltoceratoides ardennensis D'Orb.) A. plicatilis (= Perisphenctes plicatilis Sow.) OVID, Metamorphoses Abstract We present a modern revision of the dimorphic ammonite pair Strigoceras QUENSTEDT, 1886/Cadomoceras MUNIER-CHALMAS, 1892 from the Middle Jurassic. The stratigraphically oldest hitherto known chronospecies of Strigoceras, S. praenuntium (BUCKMAN) appears in the Middle Aalenian as an extreme rarity. Records of the microconch genus Cadomoceras re- main unknown from strata older than Early Bajocian, but otherwise its stratigraphical range corresponds well with that of the macroconchs. The genus probably became extinct in the Early Bathonian (Zigzag Zone). The youngest known Strigoceras is S. callomoni n. sp. descri- bed here from the Macrescens Subzone of the Early Bathonian. Another new strigoceratid species, Granulochetoceras oppeliisculptum n. sp., is recorded by a single specimen from the early Garantiana Zone of eastern Spain, representing an interesting phyletic link between Stri- goceras QUENSTEDT, 1886 and Granulochetoceras GEYER, 1960. We include a brief review of the latter genus. By including Granulochetoceras in the Strigoceratidae the family would ex- tend to the Late Kimmeridgian of the Late Jurassic. The palaeogeographic distribution of Strigoceras/Cadomoceras is focussed on the western Tethyan Province, but some species also occur in the northern Pacific and its adjacent shelves. A benefit of this large area of distribution is that strigoceratids may be used to correlate distant locations, but this is partly hampered by the relatively wide range of variability within succeeding chronospecies and remarkably large variation in size of adult macroconchs.
