  • Politics in Nigeria: a Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’S ‘Giddy Festival’
Humanitatis Theoreticus Journal, Vol. 1(1) (2018) (Original paper) O R I G I N A L A R T I C L E Theatre Politics in Nigeria: A Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’s ‘Giddy Festival’ Philip Peter Akoje Department of Theatre Arts, Kogi State University, Ayigba. Email: [email protected] Phone Number: +2347039781766 Abstract Politics is a vital aspect of every society. This is due to the fact that the general development of any country is first measured by its level of political development. Good political condition in a nation is a sine qua non to economic growth. A corrupt and unstable political system in any country would have a domino-effect on the country's economic outlook and social lives of the people. The concept of politics itself continued to be interpreted by many political scholars, critics and the masses from different perspectives. Corruption, political assassination, greed, perpetrated not only by politicians but also by the masses are the societal ills that continue to militate against socio-economic and political development in most African countries, particularly Nigeria. Peaceful political transition to the opposition party in Nigeria in recent times has given a different dimension to the country’s political position for other countries in the region to emulate. This paper addresses the concept of politics and presents corruption in Nigerian society from the point of theatre, using Osita Ezenwanebe’s Giddy Festival. The investigation is grounded in sociological theory and the concept of political realism. This paper recommends that politics can be violent-free if all the actors in the game develop selfless qualities of leadership for the benefit of the ruled.

From Guardian Online 6 June 2014 Kaye Whiteman obituary (Died 17 May 2014) (At Friends’ School 1947 to 1952 – YG 53) Journalist who witnessed and documented key moments in modern African history For many years, Kaye Whiteman edited West Africa magazine. Photograph: Gerald Mclean The journalist and editor Kaye Whiteman, who has died aged 78, possessed a remarkable knowledge of Africa, its peoples and those who governed them. He met most of the key African leaders from the period of decolonisation and independence, both English- and French-speaking, and was in touch with many of those involved in public service throughout the continent. His area of particular expertise was west Africa, and above all Nigeria. He first went there and to nearby Ghana in 1964 as the deputy editor of the weekly West Africa magazine. He returned to Ghana the following year to cover the summit of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which he described in his article Ghana at 50 in Africa Today (March 2007) as "an African event of unrivalled spectacle, when all Africa came to pay tribute to the great pioneer of independence", a reference to Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president. Kaye also reported on the Nigerian civil war of 1967-70 for the Times, witnessing the surrender of the Biafran general Philip Effiong to General Yakubu Gowon. In 1973 he went to Brussels, as a senior information officer for the European commission, dealing with development issues, especially in Africa. In the meantime, the ownership of West Africa magazine moved from Britain to Nigeria, and in 1982 Kaye succeeded David Williams as editor, later becoming editor-in-chief and general manager.

22 UFAHAMU ADJUSTMENT, POLITICAL TRANSITION, AND TIIE ORGANIZATION OF MILITARY POWER IN NIGERIA by Julius 0. Ihonvbere Now, soldiers are part of national problems, rather than problem solvers. And suddenly soldiers are beginning to realize how their thirst for power could plunge their nations into crisis.... In Nigeria, the army authorities are beginning to come to terms with the dangers that the army ironically poses to the nation. t If there is any institution to be least respected in Nigeria, it is the Nigerian army. How could one explain a situation where semi-illiterates whose only qualification is their unguarded accessibility to weapons, want to hold the entire country to ransom?2 With the decline in oil revenues, the closure of credit lines, mounting foreign debts and debt service ratios, and inability to manage an internal economic crisis, the Nigerian government, under General Ibrahim Babangida, had no alternative to adopting a structural adjustment program in 1986. The components of the adjustment program have not been different from those prescribed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank for other "debt distressed" and crisis-ridden African states. It has included policies of desubsidization, deregulation, privatization, retrenchment of workers, and political control of opposition. Nigeria's adjustment program has achieved very lirtle.3 True, a new realism has taken over the society with increasing economic contraction and the gradual rolling back of the state. Yet, at the level of concrete economic achievement, there has been very little to show for the harsh policies imposed on the people.4 The failure, or rather the limited achievement of the adjustment program, can be attributed to a range of internal and external factors.

  • Political Assassination and Nigeria’S 4Th Republic: 1999-2007
Kuwait Chapter of Arabian Journal of Business and Management Review Vol. 3, No.11; July. 2014 POLITICAL ASSASSINATION AND NIGERIA’S 4TH REPUBLIC: 1999-2007 Adeolu Durotoye Department of Political Science and International Studies Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria Abstract Not long after the return to democratic rule in 1999 following 15 years of uninterrupted military rule, Nigeria witnessed a troubling wave of political assassination. Political assassination became an instrument of settling political scores in Nigeria. Although some of the killings were discountenanced as ordinary murders, the timing of killings leaves no doubt that they were politically motivated. Actions by the government and police to stem the ugly tide and find the killers were insufficient and ineffective. This paper examines this subject from the standpoint that there is no real democracy where people are afraid to engage in political competition for fear of being assassinated. Hence, political assassination constitutes serious danger to Nigeria’s democracy. The paper reviews incidents of political assassination in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007, and proffers reasons for the unhealthy development, using narrative-analytical approach to accomplish its tasks. It concludes by suggesting ways of stopping or at least discouraging political assassination in Nigeria. For the purposes of this article, political assassination is defined as the deliberate, premeditated murder of a prominent figure for political reasons. Keywords: Politics, assassination, Nigeria, Democracy 1. INTRODUCTION Nigeria’s Police chief, Sunday Ehindero, alerted the National Assembly of the alarming security situation in Nigeria just before the 2007 elections; “Now coming down to the security situation in the country in relation to the 2007 elections, I have to inform you that we have arms in large quantities in our society; proliferation of arms and ammunitions in our society…There is a big threat of proliferation of arms and ammunitions in this country.

Preliminary Investigation by the Public Prosecutor in Nigeria: Obstacles and Challenges in Bringing a Charge Against Individuals due to their Social Class or Ethnic Origin. By Lohya Ibrahim Lakai LLB, BL* Abstract Criminal cases in Nigeria, unlike civil cases are preceded by investigation. A good and thorough investigation unravels facts that would support the conviction of an accused per- son. In Nigeria, the process of investigation is usually undermined by a lot of obstacles and challenges which include: political interference, Ethnic bias etc. This article analyzed the process of investigation, indentified these obstacles and challenges as well as proffered so- lutions to them. A INTRODUCTION Crimes or rather offences are said to be wrongs against the society and the victim. This in- forms the reason for the investigation into allegations of these wrongs by a government agency which is empowered, equipped and funded to do so. Investigations, where properly, objectively and sincerely done will enhance the criminal justice delivery. While in other parts of the world, the prosecution does the investigation, in Nigeria, the Police or other specialized agencies investigates. For quite some time now, there have been complaints on the manner and quality of investigations and prosecution by the investigating agencies. These complaints include: complaints on possible compromise on grounds of ethnic affilia- tions with the accused persons as well as complaints on interference at high and political level. The government's actions have included arresting and threatening human rights activists, closing two publications, arresting and detaining journalists, taking over the national bar association and threatening striking academics. Adding to fears has been the government's mishandling of ethnic and religious conflicts that have the potential to tear the country apart. In an investigation of violence between
