Politics in Nigeria: a Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’S ‘Giddy Festival’
Humanitatis Theoreticus Journal, Vol. 1(1) (2018) (Original paper) O R I G I N A L A R T I C L E Theatre Politics in Nigeria: A Discourse of Osita Ezenwanebe’s ‘Giddy Festival’ Philip Peter Akoje Department of Theatre Arts, Kogi State University, Ayigba. Email: [email protected] Phone Number: +2347039781766 Abstract Politics is a vital aspect of every society. This is due to the fact that the general development of any country is first measured by its level of political development. Good political condition in a nation is a sine qua non to economic growth. A corrupt and unstable political system in any country would have a domino-effect on the country's economic outlook and social lives of the people. The concept of politics itself continued to be interpreted by many political scholars, critics and the masses from different perspectives. Corruption, political assassination, greed, perpetrated not only by politicians but also by the masses are the societal ills that continue to militate against socio-economic and political development in most African countries, particularly Nigeria. Peaceful political transition to the opposition party in Nigeria in recent times has given a different dimension to the country’s political position for other countries in the region to emulate. This paper addresses the concept of politics and presents corruption in Nigerian society from the point of theatre, using Osita Ezenwanebe’s Giddy Festival. The investigation is grounded in sociological theory and the concept of political realism. This paper recommends that politics can be violent-free if all the actors in the game develop selfless qualities of leadership for the benefit of the ruled. -
The Case Study of Owo LGA, Ondo State, Nigeria
The International Journal Of Engineering And Science (IJES) ||Volume||2 ||Issue|| 9 ||Pages|| 19-31||2013|| ISSN(e): 2319 – 1813 ISSN(p): 2319 – 1805 Geo-Information for Urban Waste Disposal and Management: The Case Study of Owo LGA, Ondo State, Nigeria *1Dr. Michael Ajide Oyinloye and 2Modebola-Fadimine Funmilayo Tokunbo Department of Urban and Regional Planning, School of Environmental Technology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria --------------------------------------------------------ABSTRACT-------------------------------------------------- Management of waste is a global environmental issue that requires special attention for the maintenance of quality environment. It has been observed that amount, size, nature and complexity of waste generated by man are profoundly influenced by the level of urbanization and intensity of socio-economical development in a given settlement. The problem associated with its management ranges from waste generation, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. The study involves a kind of multi-criteria evaluation method by using geographical information technology as a practical instrument to determine the most suitable sites of landfill location in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo state. Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) 2002 and updated 2012 were used to map the most suitable site for waste disposal in Owo LGA. The result indicates that sites were found within the study area. The most suitable sites in the study area are located at 200metre buffer to surface water and 100metre to major and minor roads. The selected areas have 2500metres buffer zone distance from urban areas (built up areas). The study purposes acceptable landfill sites for solid waste disposal in the study area. The results achieved in this study will help policy and decision makers to take appropriate decision in considering sanitary landfill sites. -
PROBLEMS and CHALLENGES in MEETING the STANDARDS for EFFECTIVE RADIOTHERAPY DELIVERY in NIGERIA Timothy Akpa
PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES IN MEETING THE STANDARDS FOR EFFECTIVE RADIOTHERAPY DELIVERY IN NIGERIA Timothy Akpa Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Abuja OUTLINE • Introduction • Requirements for starting a Radiotherapy Facility • Safety Problems in Radiation Therapy Practice in Nigeria • Reflections on the Way Forward INTRODUCTION Prediction on Cancer Occurrence • According to the estimates from World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of new cancer cases detected globally would rise from the existing 10.1 million in year 2000 to around 15.3 million in 2020 • This rise of 51.4% would be mainly attributed to an increase of 72.2% in the new cancer cases detected in the developing countries, (from 5.4 million in 2000 to 9.3 million in 2020). • In developed countries, the rise during the corresponding period is expected to be just around 27.6%. • Coupled with the rise in incidence of cancer in developing countries, the estimated rise in deaths could be to the tune of 75% from 3.6 million to nearly 6.3 million in the next 20 years • To cater for this predicted increase in cancer incidence in developing countries, at least some options are imperative: • to take adequate comprehensive measures directed towards cancer prevention and early diagnosis – Cancer prevention and education is an important facet of the cancer management strategy , which has to be pursued vigorously . • to establish adequate treatment and palliative care structures . (This will also make early diagnosis effective.) – Radiation therapy is an important component of the integrated cancer treatment – nearly 50 to 60% of the patients would be requiring radiation therapy at some point • to have an effective cancer management strategy, facilities for radiation therapy should be available within easy reach of the patients. -
The Case of Ipele–Isua Highway
Daramola et al. Geo-Engineering (2018) 9:28 https://doi.org/10.1186/s40703-018-0096-9 TECHNICAL NOTE Open Access Premature failure of a major highway in southwestern Nigeria: the case of Ipele–Isua highway S. O. Daramola*, S. Malomo and Y. A. Asiwaju‑Bello *Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract Department of Applied Mineralogical, geochemical and geotechnical analyses were carried out to evaluate Geology, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria the contributions of geological and geotechnical properties of subgrade soils to the incidence of failure of the Ipele–Isua road, south-western Nigeria. Field observations showed that the road is in a very poor state of disrepair as major portions of the road alignment have failed. The road alignment is underlain in places by Quartz Schist, Banded Gneiss and Granite Gneiss. The results of the laboratory tests revealed that the natural moisture content ranges from 6.5 to 23.3%, liquid limit from 20.1 to 55.1%, plasticity index 5.2 to 22.2%. The grain size analysis showed that the amount of fnes ranges from 13 to 60.8%. Others are linear shrinkage between 2.9 and 11%, free swell between 16.67 and 41.94%, maximum dry density from 1520 to 1792.1 kg/m3 and CBR between− 2 and 17%. The specifc gravity ranges from 2.51 to 2.63. The major clay minerals present are kaolinite and dickite with dominance in 50% of the samples. Major oxides present are SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O. Na2O, MgO and CaO are generally less than 1%. Based on AASHTO classifcation, 19% of the samples are classifed as A-2-4, 33% classifed as A-2-6 while 44% classifed as A-7. -
