    1. HISTORY (Class IX, Chapter 1 and 2) The French Revolution The French Society during the Late 18th Century In 1774, Louis XVI, a 20 year young from Bourbon dynasty ascended the throne of France. He was welcomed by empty treasure. France was reeling under a tremendous debt which had mounted Up to 2 billion lives.For meeting these expenses increase in the tax was inevitable. The French Society was divided into three estates. First, two enjoyed all privileges. 1st Estate: Clergy 2nd Estate: Nobility 3rd Estate: Big businessmen, merchants, court officials, peasants, artisans, landless laborers, servants, etc. Some within the Third Estate were rich and some were poor. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the Third Estate alone. The Struggle for Survival: Population of France grew and so did the demand for grain. The gap between the rich and poor widened. This led to subsistence crises. Subsistence Crisis: An extreme situation where the basic means of livelihood are endangered. The Growing Middle Class: The 18th century witnessed the emergence of the middle class which was educated and believed that no group in society should be privileged by birth. These ideas were put forward by philosophers such as Locke the English philosopher and Rousseau, French philosopher. The American constitution and its guarantee of individual rights was an important example of political theories of France. These ideas were discussed intensively in salons and coffee houses and spread among people through books and newspapers. These were even read aloud. THE OUTBREAK OF THE REVOLUTION The French Revolution went through various stages.

While this description is not entirely inaccurate and may also be useful, it fails to reflect the variability of treatment of restavèks , the complex ways in which power is exercised, the ways in which people occupy “oppressor” and “oppressed” roles simultaneously, the various local understandings of restavèk relationships and human rights, and the particular historical meanings and memories attached to slavery in Haiti. A stratification system is the overlapping manner in which societal members are ranked into classes, status groups and hierarchies of power. To distinguish among them, social scientists use models, abstract conceptions that they place on a particular continuum. At one extreme of the continuum is the closed, or caste, stratification system. The middle is represented by the estate system. At the other extreme is the open, or class, system. The Closed Society: Caste Whether a society has an open or a closed stratification system is determined by the way its members obtain wealth, prestige and privilege. In a closed, or caste, stratification system, class, status and power are ascribed, that is, determined strictly on the basis of family inheritance rather than individual effort or merit. In a closed society, the individual is born into a specific social stratum, called a caste, and has no opportunity to move in or out of it. Classical India offers a glaring example of a closed society. The case system that languished in India for centuries was distinguished by the fact that people were divided into a number of castes, representing areas of service to society and ranked in order of their so-called importance to it. Some ranking also resulted from struggles for power or conquest by other groups. Religion and tradition forbade members of one caste to intermarry or interact in any way with members of other castes.

    Drought and the French Revolution: The effects of adverse weather conditions on peasant revolts in 1789 Maria Waldinger (London School of Economics)1 This paper examines the role of adverse climatic conditions on political protest and institutional development. In particular, it assesses the role of adverse climate on the eve of the French Revolution on peasant uprisings in 1789. Historians have argued that crop failure in 1788 and cold weather in the winter of 1788/89 led to peasant revolts in various parts of France. To test this hypothesis, I construct a cross section data set with information on temperature in 1788 and 1789 and on the precise location of peasant revolts. Results show that adverse weather conditions significantly increased the likelihood of peasant uprisings, in particular in areas that depended especially on agriculture. 1. Introduction Recent research has shown that recessions may trigger revolutions because they decrease people’s opportunity costs of contesting power (Acemoglu and Robinson, 2001, 2006; Berger and Spoerer, 2001, for the European Revolutions in 1848; Brueckner and Ciccone, 2011, for regime change in Africa). People have “nothing to lose” and protest against the government, even if the recession’s causes are known to be exogenous and transitory (Burke and Leigh, 2010: 126, Acemoglu and Robinson, 2006). Protesters will uphold the threat of revolution until institutional changes ensure more redistributive policies in the future (Acemoglu and Robinson, 2006: 31f.) In 1788, on the eve of the French Revolution, a drought hit France and caused severe crop failure (Neumann 1977). The present research addresses both of these literature gaps by examining how individuals in global, distributed, electronic networks of practice allocate status in a legitimate hierarchy. Taking as its context one of the first of these organizations – the SAP Community Network – this dissertation employed the DELPHI Method, AllOurIdeas.org, and panel data to leverage a research design that kept distinct status antecedents and outcomes, and yielded five distinct contributions to knowledge.

Parental Incarceration and Social Status Attainment of Hispanic Young Adults Abstract The fact that parental incarceration has become a common event in the life course of many children is troubling. Using structural equation modeling, the present study investigates how immigrant generational status, family socio-economic background interact with parental incarceration to influence status attainment for Hispanic young adults. Three indicators of status attainment in young adulthood are used as outcome variables ─ educational attainment, wage and job quality. Results indicate that parental incarceration has a strong and negative influence on all three indicators of attained status. Most importantly, we found that parental incarceration mediates influence of immigrant generational status and family socio-economic background on status attainment of Hispanic young adults.

I expose the colonialist traditions of selective memory, the ones that determine which histories deserve the attention of professional historians, philosophers, novelists, artists and filmmakers. In addition to their capacity to comfort and entertain, films also serve to inform, shape and influence public consciousness. Central to the thesis, therefore, is an analysis of contemporary filmic representations and denials of Haiti and the Haitian Revolution. I employ a research design that examines the relationship between depictions of Haiti and the country’s colonial experience, as well as the revolution that reshaped that experience. I address two main questions related to the revolution and its connection to the age of modernity. The first concerns an examination of how Haiti has contributed to the production of modernity while the second investigates what it means to remove Haiti from this production of modernity. I aim to unsettle the hegemonic understanding of modernity as the sole creation of the West. The thrust of my argument is that the Haitian Revolution created the space where a re-articulation of the human could be possible.

    Revision Notes Chapter - 1 THE FRENCH REVOLUTION The French Society during the Late 18th Century In 1774, Louis XVI, a 20 year young from Bourbon dynasty ascended the throne of France. He was welcomed by empty treasure. The France was reeling under tremendous debt which had mounted Up to 2 billion livres.For meeting theses expenses increase in the tax was inevitable. The French Society was divided into three estates. First two enjoyed all privileges. 1st Estate: Clergy 2nd Estate: Nobility 3rd Estate: Big businessmen, merchants, court officials, peasants, artisans, landless labourers, servants, etc. Some within the Third Estate were rich and some were poor. The burden of financing activities of the state through taxes was borne by the Third Estate alone. The Struggle for Survival : Population of France grew and so did the demand for grain. The gap between the rich and poor widened. This led to subsistence crises. Subsistence Crisis : An extreme situation where the basic means of livelihood are endangered . The Growing Middle Class : The 18th century witnessed the emergence of middle class which was educated and believed that no group in society should be privileged by birth. These ideas were put forward by philosophers such as Locke the English philosopher and Rousseau, French philosopher. The American constitution and its guarantee of individual rights was an important example of political theories of France. These ideas were discussed intensively in salons and coffee houses and spread among people through books and newspapers. These were even read aloud. THE OUTBREAK OF THE REVOLUTION The French Revolution went through various stages.
