Page 117 FILM REVIEWS Year of the Remake: The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man Jenny McDonnell The current trend for remakes of 1970s horror movies continued throughout 2006, with the release on 6 June of John Moore’s The Omen 666 (a sceneforscene reconstruction of Richard Donner’s 1976 The Omen) and the release on 1 September of Neil LaBute’s The Wicker Man (a reimagining of Robin Hardy’s 1973 film of the same name). In addition, audiences were treated to remakes of The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (due Christmas 2006) and When a Stranger Calls (a film that had previously been ‘remade’ as the opening sequence of Scream). Finally, there was Pulse, a remake of the Japanese film Kairo, and another addition to the body of remakes of nonEnglish language horror films such as The Ring, The Grudge and Dark Water. Unsurprisingly, this slew of remakes has raised eyebrows and questions alike about Hollywood’s apparent inability to produce innovative material. As the remakes have mounted in recent years, from Planet of the Apes to King Kong, the cries have grown ever louder: Hollywood, it would appear, has run out of fresh ideas and has contributed to its evergrowing bank balance by quarrying the classics. Amid these accusations of Hollywood’s imaginative and moral bankruptcy to commercial ends in tampering with the films on which generations of cinephiles have been reared, it can prove difficult to keep a level head when viewing films like The Omen 666 and The Wicker Man.

58TH SEMAINE DE LA CRITIQUE (CRITICS’ Week) THE JOYOUS MIX OF GENRES Cette programmation est aussi l’occasion de découvrir deux Faithful to the mission of the Critics’ Week, this 58th selection regards singuliers venus du monde arabe.

Music continues at a lower volume as April introduces herself and her guest, and then it fades out. 00:00:08 April Wolfe Host Welcome to Switchblade Sisters, where women get together to slice and dice our favorite action and genre films. I'm April Wolfe. Every week, I invite a new female filmmaker on—a writer, director, actor, or producer—and we talk in-depth about one of their fave genre films, perhaps one that influenced their own work in some small way, and today I'm very excited to have writer-director Alice Waddington here with me. Hi, Alice! 00:00:28 Alice Guest Hi, April! How are you? Waddington [Music fades out.] 00:00:30 April Host Oh, I'm quite well. [Alice laughs.] Despite fires raging. 00:00:32 Alice Guest Oh my goodness. 00:00:33 April Host But I gotta say your pink jumpsuit—pink corduroy jumpsuit is really livening up the place. 00:00:39 Alice Guest [Laughs.] Thank you so much. I'm—you know, I am on my Logan's Run stuff already. So. [Laughs.] 00:00:44 April Host Absolutely. I mean, Halloween should be year-round. • A Film by Stephen Graves
A film by Stephen Graves Poster art by Grant Kempster © Stephen Graves 2019 A film by Stephen Graves “It always is Christmas Eve, in a ghost story.” Jerome K Jerome “Have they no refuge or resource?” cried Scrooge. “Are there no prisons?” said the Spirit, turning on him for the last time with his own words. “Are there no workhouses?” Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol Logline After an affluent man leaves a rough sleeper to die in the cold on Christmas Eve, he’s haunted by a figure that may be a vengeful spirit - or his own guilty conscience. Short synopsis On Christmas Eve, HARRY (40s, affluent) is accosted in an alley by a ROUGH SLEEPER, who’s clearly in a bad way. In a rush, Harry brushes the man off - leaving him to die. Later, Harry’s car engine stalls on a country road; trying to restart the car, he sees a FIGURE in the headlights. It vanishes. That night, Harry is woken by the wind. He sees the Figure standing on his lawn, and heads out to confront it. He gets lost in the fog and stumbles, striking his head; as his life ebbs away, the Figure stands over him... © Stephen Graves 2019 Director’s Statement In the tradition of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Dawn of the Dead, The Dead of Winter addresses contemporary social concerns through the heightened reality of the horror genre. A reinterpretation of the classic ghost story, it tackles themes of privilege, social responsibility, guilt and the “fear of the other,” through a modern interpretation of the classic ghost story.

  • Tin Can Infosheet
TIN CAN - 2020, 103min, Canada As the world faces a deadly plague, a front-lines parasitologist is imprisoned in a life-suspension chamber. To escape she must destroy the last of her kind. SYNOPSIS Cold, pale, and in the dark, Fret Greyl crashes back to waking life, inside a 3' x 5’ cylindrical container. She tears off the mask fastened to her mouth and cries out for help. Others are out there, trapped in the same scenario, including her ex, John Schimdt. From her tiny cell, Fret commiserates with the other captives; together they piece together what happened. A global plague called Coral had been ravaging Earth. This invasive fungus swept from one continent to the next with incredible speed, infecting all living things. Offret had been a parasitologist, obsessed with developing new ways to control the life-form. Her work could have saved millions, but before she could complete it, she was imprisoned by an unknown abductor. We soon learn that the other captives, however, are willing participants. Each of them signed up for VASE, a life-suspending preservation program intended to slow Coral growth in those affected. And now these guinea pigs, in varying stages of the disease, await the promised cure from the future. As Offret begins to witness her neighbouring cellmates being released and executed, she sees who’s responsible: a faceless, armoured attendant who seems to run the facility. As more people are taken away, Offret tries desperately to escape. From the inside, she tears apart her container, but it’s a futile act. She’s next up.
