The global capital markets ecosystem is no exception. E Capitalism, carefully incentivized and regulated by government, provides the rich, fertile soil in which an incredibly diverse genome of businesses and industries have evolved and thrived. While some businesses – and entire industries – age, decline, die, and decay, new businesses and previously unimagined industries emerge, fresh and nimble, from the newly enriched soil. Innovation, creativity, and human imagination spark the fire that drives introduction of new technologies, new products and services, and new ways of delivering those products and services to where they are needed and desired. A virtuous liquidity cycle. Communications Finally, the capital markets ecosystem depends upon a constant supply of information – the oxygen that it inhales to keep all of its systems functioning efficiently and that fuels action by all participants in the ecosystem. Investor relations professionals, in symbiotic partnership with their C-suite, finance, accounting, legal, and financial planning and analysis colleagues, hold the awe- some responsibility of ensuring that the primary source of information emanating from the com- pany is clean, reliable, consistent, and responsive. As members of NIRI, we must never lose sight of this critical role. The IR profession represents a sub-system of the larger ecosystem, and “our” health and abilities must constantly evolve in order to respond effectively to the capital market’s changing needs and demands for its form of oxygen. As the largest and longest-tenured professional investor relations organization, NIRI exists to both promote the profession and to develop IR professionals. Through a year-round schedule of semi- nars, webinars, and publications, as well as networking opportunities through local chapters, NIRI is committed to enhancing and expanding the capabilities of all of its members. On March 19, NIRI hosted the inaugural Investor and Issuer Invitational Forum (“Big I”) at Baruch College in Manhattan, at which a diverse group of thought leaders engaged in dialogue about the growing importance of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) information to the capital markets and other key stakeholders. It was a day of provocative and insightful interchange and posi- tioned NIRI at the nucleus of this important conversation. On June 2-5, NIRI’s Annual Conference will take place in Phoenix at the J.W. Marriott Desert Ridge Resort. Under the theme of “The Power of IR,” the conference will include 50 educational sessions, including 10 general sessions with a stellar lineup of speakers. Making the commitment to attend and hear these speakers, and to network with IR colleagues from around the globe, will help you expand your understanding of market forces and enhance your ability to serve your company and its stakeholders. If you haven’t already, register today at www.niri.org. During the Annual Conference, NIRI will celebrate its 50th anniversary with numerous activities to commemorate this milestone. • The Electrical Writings of Benjamin Franklin and Friends As Collected by Robert A
Benjamin Franklin: Papers on Electricity collected by R. A. Morse 2004 page i The Electrical Writings of Benjamin Franklin and Friends as collected by Robert A. Morse, 2004 This is a collection of Benjamin Franklin’s papers on electricity, made as part of a project to develop a teacher workshop on Franklin’s electrical experiments while I was a Fellow at the H. Dudley Wright Center for Innovation in Science Teaching at Tufts University, Medford, MA. The workshop materials, which allow you to recreate many of Franklin’s experiments, are available from the Wright Center at <www.tufts.edu/as/wright_center>. Experiments on Electricity: Many of Franklin’s works including his Autobiography can be found on the Internet, but only a few of his letters on electricity are available there. Franklin’s book, Experiments and Observations on Electricity, made at Philadelphia in America appeared in five English editions. The first was published in three parts from 1751-1754, the second in two parts in 1754 and the third in three parts from 1762-1765 were published without Franklin’s direct involvement. Franklin edited and directed the publication of the fourth edition in 1769 and the fifth in 1774. Today, Franklin’s book is accessible in print in three editions to my knowledge: A scholarly version of the fifth edition (1774) edited by I. Bernard Cohen and published in 1941, with a comprehensive introduction by Cohen can be found in some university libraries. A few copies may be available in used book stores. Anyone seriously interested in Franklin’s work should read Cohen’s introduction.

  • Symphony Safari
SYMPHONY SAFARI TEACHER GUIDE THIS BOOKLET BELONGS TO: _________________________ Dear Teachers: The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra is presenting Symphony Safari this Fall; it is a program to integrate the concert experience into the lesson plans across the curriculum so students understand what is happening in the concert and can relate it to what they are learning in the classroom. This program is an opportunity for the students to understand how music is a reflection of a culture, a moment in history, or a need for entertainment or serious contemplation. You will receive a teacher’s guide that contains a Listening Preparation in a purple box. There are two multi-disciplinary projects which you can plan with other teachers to complete. There are many suggested activities that relate to the subjects you are teaching. These are intended for use throughout the year whenever your lesson plans touch on the subject, e.g. waterways, earth formation. Additionally, you have a DVD with the music accompanied by graphics to make preparation more interesting. Students receive a Student Journal. Distribute the journal to the students when doing the exercises and collect them between usage. You may also load them (from the website) on their iPads (or similar) so they have them when needed to use the materials most effectively. BEFORE THE CONCERT: Prepare the students in advance of the concert by completing the Listening Preparation exercise for each work. Two pieces are longer, so you might play a portion each day. Playing the piece twice at different times provides reinforcement and recognition. The preparation for serious music is similar to teaching a child to swim before letting him jump into the deep end of the pool.

Navarro*, Esperanza Marchena and Inmaculada Menacho Department of Psychology, University of Cadiz, Spain Abstract: Hatred is a deep and emotional extreme dislike. The objects of such hatred can vary extensively. Hatred is often associated with disposition towards hostility against the objects of hatred. And can drive oneself to extreme behaviors such as violence, murder, and war. In childhood and adolescence the attitudes of intolerance - impregnated with hatred – are formed, and these are extremely difficult to eradicate later. This paper goes through psychological perspective of hate and the different roles of cognition in hatred and violence. Then the duplex theory of hatred is presented considering some approaches to the origin of violent behaviors. Taking into consideration that complex problems do not respond to simple solutions, a potential alternative based on family and school education plays a major role. Learning conflict resolution based on negotiation and compromise seems essential, in addition to adopting intellectually and morally combative atti- tudes against violence. Keywords: Hatred, violence, cognition, automatic thoughts.
