The results of the measurements Show an improvement over the

cur former conditions by a reduction of about 50 per cent . in the rent returning over the water mains t o the street railway power station in Chelsea and by a noticeable redu ction in the current returning over the water mains to the street railway power station

in Lynn . The improved condition in Chelsea is probably due in part to the

use of insulating joints in relaying the 24- in ch water main in Broad way in 1 9 1 3 and in part t o a rearrangement and in crease in capacity

th t the co m of e street railway re urn feeders , made by railway

pany during the same year . The improved condition in Lynn is probably due to the installa tion of insulating joints in the l 6- inch water main at Fox H ill Bridge in 1 913 and to the improvement in the street railway return feeders which has also been made by the railway com

pany . The operation of a new substation located on Center Street in Malden since 1 91 2 has probably had Some effect in redu cing the

PUMPING STATIONS.

CAPACITY AND RE SULTS .

It will be noticed that the pumping expense per million foot gallons in four stations is slightly in excess of that of last year . This is due principally to an increase in rate of wages of firemen and t oilers in the large stations and of engineers in the small s ations . h This increase extended over practically seven months of t e year .

At the Ward Street Station considerable expe nse has been incurred

h the . t by reason of repairs to t e valves in pumps In one sta ion only ,

The 60- inch outfall pipes o n the South Metropolitan System have

1904 . been in operation since October, Dur These outfalls are in good condition and free from deposit . ing the year the average flow through the North Metropolitan out fall at Dee r Island has been gallons of sewage per 24 2 i c , hours , with a max mum rate of gallons on Mar h

' the t t 1 914 . The amount of sewage discharged in Nor h Metropoli an

c e District averaged 1 12 gallons per day for ea h p rson , taking the the estimated po pulation of the district contributing sewage . If sewers in this district were restricted to the admission of sewage t ca proper only and all local sewers were separa e sewers , this per p

II] S t S the amount of sewage contributed the ou h Metropolitan ystem , which was at the rate of 1 91 gallons per day per person of the D t estimated number contributing sewage in the is rict . The daily discharge of sewage per capita is considerably larger in the South Metropolitan District than it is in the North Metropolitan
