  • A 40 Year History
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association National Secondary School Cross Country Championships A 40 Year History Introduction The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association is proud to publish a forty- year history of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. Participation in the event between 1974 and 2013 totals well over 10,000 athletes from all but a handful of schools from around the country. With an annual involvement of over 1000 students it has become one of the largest secondary school sporting events in New Zealand. The idea for this document was born during the 1995 NZSSCC Championships in Masterton. At this time (before the internet), results were published in a hard copy booklet. In this particular year the first three place getters in the individual, and three and six person team categories were published for the first twenty-one years of the events history. This accompanied the full set of 1995 results. After this event, the majority of results were published electronically. Unfortunately, many of these results were lost in the mid to late nineties because there was no dedicated NZSSAA website. Sincere thanks need to be given to Don Chadderton for providing the first twenty years’ of results. Without these early results a significant part of athletics New Zealand’s history would have eventually been forgotten. These include the 1974 performance of Alison Rowe, who would later go on to win both the 1981 Boston and New York marathons. As well as Burnside High School’s 1978 performance in the junior boys event where they completed the perfect three-man score of six points.

However, I am exceptionally pleased to report that by keeping a clear and perhaps tighter focus on the objectives of the organisation, we have transitioned the year in a healthy state. And along the way a number of exceptional highlights have been achieved both on and off the race courses. The Board is confident that our Strategic Plan is sound and Our superb team of partners and sponsors continues to that the medium term objectives and supporting outcomes grow and each of these organisations is acknowledged of the strategy remain completely relevant for Tri NZ as the later in this report. We are extremely fortunate that all national body responsible for the development of the sport these supporters are fully engaged with us and our sport of Triathlon in New Zealand.

(Tri NZ) and the sport of triathlon generally are in very strong shape. When I wrote last year’s report the Olympic Games were just getting into full swing, and one year later the games seem like an age ago. Our Olympic athletes returned some excellent results, and of course particular congratulations go to Bevan Docherty for picking up a second Olympic medal. Whilst I know some of our Olympians are lamenting a day that didn’t end up quite as perfectly as they had dreamed of, I have no doubt that each one of the Kiwi’s prepared as well as they could and gave everything they had on the day. Congratulations to you all and to Stephen Farrell and the High Performance team for running a particularly successful Olympic campaign. Once again Kiwi triathletes have featured on the encouraging rate. This year more than 2,600 entries international arena in all sorts of exotic (and not so were received for the seven races, and the new event exotic) locations around the world.
