Here he tells us about the leg that will take us through the Alps from 20-22 July. “I hope people will appreciate the majesty of these great Alpine passes that have been used in the past for both racing and hillclimbing. The purpose of this route is to get Members of the beaten track and see the wonder of the Alps at close quarters. “These days the speed limit is 50mph, which sounds slow, until you get onto those roads where there are very few barriers and lots of hairpin bends. The Stelvio pass is an absolutely incredible feat of engineering, with 49 hairpins going up the northern face. “Those in modern cars with power steering, dual clutches and carbon brakes will have an easier journey than those with older cars, GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED but there’s always a sense of achievement. presented by Mastercard, 12-15 JULY “The San Bernadino pass is another classic road, with spectacular scenery, but it’s worth remembering that the temperature diference between the bottom and the top can be as much as 15 degrees, so we recommend having a jersey ready when you reach the top! “The passes open at the beginning of June and close at the end of FESTIVAL’S October, so towards the end of July should be perfect. Members will be driving some of the most stunning roads in the whole of Europe.” To register for this leg, please visit the Driving Tours section of the GRRC section on the Goodwood Road and Racing website.
