Podium finish not enough to win Championship If there was ever a case of déjà vu, we experienced it this weekend at the for the 2013 Super Taikyu Series Final. In the championship hunt, we qualified third ahead of our Team Mates(the Championship Leaders) and behind a couple of GT-R Powerhouses that proved unbeatable all weekend.

As with 2012, we awoke on Sunday race day to bitter cold, thick low hanging fog and bouts of torrential rain. Warm ups were cancelled and the race was delayed, delayed and delayed yet again, before we eventually took the start for a shortened two hour race, which begun under the guidance of the safety car.

We stayed behind the flashing lights for much of the first hour, with most of the field pitting early – twice – to get complete their compulsory driver changes and rejoin the slow travelling train of over 50 cars.

With my team mates Tatsuya ‘TK’ Kataoka and Fariqe Hairuman completing just a single lap each, we jumped the queue into second in the pit stops and I spent the entire rest of the race at the wheel.

When green flag running did get underway, conditions were horrid and it soon became clear we had no answer for the turbocharged , especially at high altitude with Autopolis up in the mountains.

Relegated to third place, I pushed on as best I could, battling rain, fog and small rivers that had emerged on the track surface, as well as the lapped traffic that were themselves carefully negotiating the scary conditions.

Crossing the line with another podium finish for the season would normally have been a good, solid result, but with a ‘win or bust’ scenario ahead of us to win the title, I knew we had fallen short of claiming the championship. So, for the second year in a row, we are 2nd overall in the Super Taikyu Series. During the season we claimed two pole positions, five race wins, two podiums and a lap record. Not a bad run, but when two mechanical failures are factored in our ever-consistent team mates snuck in for the Championship, by just a couple of points. Of course, a massive congratulations to them and the team on a 1-2 Championship finish. Personally I’m disappointed as I felt we deserved more, but in the motorsport game, that’s a feeling felt often.

As my granddad always says: “Motorsport is 1% elation, and 99% frustration. But that 1% is why we keep coming back." He’s not wrong.

Thanks to my brilliant pool of sponsors and supporters for their encouragement during 2013, as well as my family, Dato David Wong, Team Manager Gen Suzuki, my engineer Niklas Thomassen, team mates Fariqe and TK and the wider Team PST outfit of mechanics and helpers that all contributed to the successes this year. You guys are bloody tops and it’s been an absolute pleasure. That wraps up 2013 on the track, although there’s still a bit of sideways time to look forward to with some initial testing in the Team DSPEC 700z drift car over the summer. 2014 will be another exciting season of racing and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all again. Thanks to each of you for the support.eekend long. AUCKLAND CAR CLUB OTHER NEWS As with 2012, we awoke on Sunday race day to bitter cold, thick low hanging fog and bouts of torrential rain. Warm ups were cancelled and the race w Rally Raid - Ford confirms 2014 Dakar participation

Team Ford Racing has confirmed it will enter two South African-built Ford Rangers in the 2014 “We are extremely proud to be sending these South African-built Rangers to the 2014 Dakar, ” said Jeff Nemeth President and CEO of of Southern Africa. “Dakar is the ultimate test of man and machine and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate with a phenomenal team comprised of local and global expertise.”

Lucio Alvarez and Ronnie Graue have been confirmed as the first driver crew - and have prior Dakar Rally pedigree. In their first outing in 2011 they finished 17th overall, in 2012 they managed to finish in an impressive fifth place. While in 2013 they were lying third overall before mechanical problems dropped them down to 27th place, but they fought their way back up to tenth position at the finish.

The second Ford Ranger will be crewed by South African cross-country competitors Chris Visser and navigator Japie Badenhorst. The pair are currently one of the leading contenders in the 2013 Donaldson South Africa National Cross-Country Championship - this will be their first time competing on the Dakar.

Auckland Summer Series Round 2 Highlights

Round 2 was held at Pukekohe on a very hot Sunday October 6th with a large number of entries, Round 2 saw the Clubmans Sports Cars join us with a field of 15 cars all taking to the track in what proved to be some very close and competitive racing We look forward to seeing them join us again for round 4 on the 8th of December, One class which had a large number of people talking was the Racing Saloons 3001cc + which saw a Mosler Mt900R enter. For those of you who have not come across a Mosler before the race-ready MT900R was designed for use in various international motorsports. The MT900 is built in the United States and the United Kingdom by Mosler and to date Appox. 30 have produced.Power by a 5.7 LS1 V8 race engine coupled to a 6 speed gearbox producing over 500KW but weighing only 1020kg. We hope to see this competing again at future rounds. Along with the Mosler was a very heavily modified Camaro along with a host of other high powered race machines. The Production Muscle class again had some very tidy classic muscle cars on display with a field dominated by Ford the racing was close and tidy with some very quick lap times being set at the track temperature increased during the day New boy Nathan Wood had a very eventful day with few spins and a bonnet on the windscreen but nothing major he will be back again racing new round. Northern Muscle saw a few offs during the day with the 7100cc Nascar powered Ford Falcon of Dean Perkins hitting the tires at the Castrol right hander, Lucky for Dean only light damage to the front of the car and a very quick pit stop for a new tire had him back out in the same race good work for his pit crew there, Anthony Galbraith was not so lucky when in race 3 his Valiant Charger hit the wall at turn 2 fingers crossed the damage is not too bad and that he is able to get back out on track again soon. Production Saloons 2001cc + saw Aaron Clark in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3 extend his lead in the points championship but he was not able to make it a clean sweep due to a spin earlier in the day. Martin Day and his Almac Sabre had a strong day with some good clean driving setting fast lap times Martin’s Almac is a rare beast. Almac is a New Zealand based kit car company founded in 1984 and is located in Upper Hutt. The Sabre was designed as a modern interpretation of the A.C Cobra The Sabre was launched at the Hamilton Motor Show in March 2004 and with five being ordered. The Classic Japanese Series had a large field but the hot weather was not good new for Al Nicolls and his Daihatsu Charade pulling out with a + overheating issue Gareth Grove and his classic Datsun 240z had a strong showing Paul Crispe managed to shake off “Man Flu” for a few hours to come and compete Paul is reminded that his friendly hand gestures to photographers on the in lap are being watched and noted!. Holley Boyd showed some huge time improvement during the day as she gets used to her new tires keep going Holley!.Rachelle Boyce’s Starlet also put in some strong lap times one to watch in the remaining rounds.

Do you have a Bentley? Want to go for a skid on some ice?

BENTLEY is returning to the ice in 2014 with a new and extended programme of slippery driving challenges for well-heeled customers.

Popular demand for the company’s exclusive – and massively expensive – Power on Ice experiences has led to an increase in the number of days Bentley is to set up shop at its erstwhile base in the north of Finland, around 37 miles from the Arctic Circle.

As ever, ice- and snow-driving specialist , who also happens to be a four-time World Rally Championship winner, will be on hand to tutor paying guests in the delicate art of driving a performance car in difficult conditions.

The latest star of Power on Ice, which can cost participants more than €13,000 to take part, is the new Flying Spur. Its 6.0-litre W12 engine can take the two- tonne car to 200mph – on tarmac at least.

Kankkunen himself piloted a Bentley Supersports Convertible to 205mph on the Finnish ice earlier this year, breaking the ice driving speed record in the process.

He will offer in-depth tuition on how to drive an assortment of Bentleys, including the Continental GT V8, in a fast, controlled way that should stand the guests in good stead should their own Bentleys achieve the unlikely and break traction on the road So if anyone with a Bentley wants to go for a skid here is your chance!

Auckland Summer Series Round 3 Highlights

Round 3 Saw a much reduced field of cars and classes. Only three classes due to run but with the addition of a sprint class. The All Classic Japanese Class with the largest field of cars with a few drivers opting to double up with racing Salon’s for some extra track time.

NEW ZEALAND TARGA

DIPPIE & GRANT CLAIM OVERALL TARGA TITLE, ROGERS AND KELLY WIN 4WD CLASS

There was a new look to the Targa New Zealand podium this year as Dunedin duo Martin Dippie and Jona Grant ( GT3 RS) claimed the overall and Instra.com Modern 2WD wins and Auckland pair David Rogers and Aidan Kelly (Mitsubishi Evo 10) won the Allcomers 4WD class. Heading into the fourth and final day of the annual multi-day tarmac motor rally event in the Hawke's Bay, Rangitikei and Central Plateau on Sunday November 03, the Allcomers 4WD class - traditionally the home of the overall event winner - was being led by Aucklander Jason Gill and his co- driver Mark Robinson in their Mitsubishi Evo 9 with Rogers and Kelly second and gravel ace Brian Green and his co-driver Fleur Pedersen third in their Mitsubishi Evo 10. However Gill's Mitsubishi ground to a halt with a blown engine in Sunday's first stage near Havelock North leaving Rogers - an Auckland radiologist who contested his first Targa event in 2010 - to claim his first major win in the Allcomers 4WD class and finish second overall to Instra.com 2WD class winners Dippie and Grant. ‘We are not as fast as some," Rogers said afterwards, " but to finish first, first you have to finish and I just don't think the machinery can take people running full pace in an event as tough as this all the time. And you have to be up there for when that happens."

After finishing third behind Clark Proctor and new co-driver Sue O'Neil (Nissan GT-R35) and Glenn Inkster and Spencer Winn (Mitsubishi Evo 8) on the first day, Gill and Robinson were in the box seat when Proctor and O'Neill rolled out of the event on the first stage of the second day and Inkster and Winn were slowed by an engine misfire. However having competed in Targa events for the past 10 years Auckland car dealer Gill accepted his fate with good grace. "That's motor racing," he said. "It was just one of those things. It's a great event and we'll be back." In stark contrast, after a fall from his Mountain Bike forced to sit out last year's event Martin Dippie could hardly have had a better run this year, the Dunedin businessman and his first time Targa co-driver Jona Grant dominating the Instra.com Modern 2WD class from the first day and taking over the role of overall event pace-setter when Gill and Robinson retired. This was also the first year in the past seven that the overall win has gone to a two-wheel- drive car, something which even Dippie wasn't expecting.

"The plan was to win the class, the overall was a bit of a surprise," he said. This year's event was Dippie's fifth in his distinctive orange Porsche GT3 RS and his plan was 'to go out with the leaders at the start and be there if they have any problems." Also impressing in the Instra.com Modern 2WD class was Steven Kirk-Burnnand and co- driving Australian cousin Elliott who worked their way up to second in Instra.com Modern 2WD in Steven's newly built BMW Compact.

In Metalman Classic 2WD, meanwhile, Steven's father Barry Kirk-Burnnand and Dave O'Carroll (BMW M3) successfully defended their 2012 event win, despite on-going pressure from Foxton duo Bevan Claridge and Jason Easton who claimed their second class stage win of the event in their Holden Commodore V8, Wanganui event regulars Peter Cullen and Craig Strachan in their exotic De Tomaso Pantera and one of the other Kirk-Burnnand crews in the event, Aucklander Carl and his co-driver Sam Gordon (BMW 325i).

Wellington brothers Angus and Euan Howden were also quick in their BMW M325i but ran off the road in the first stage today and running out of time to get back into the event to contest the second and third.

This year's Targa NZ event started in Auckland (at the Dotcom Mansion) on Thursday and ended at Taupo's Ricoh Motorsport Park four days later. And the feedback - from competitor and motorsport fan alike - was 100% positive. Numbers in the Targa Tour are the healthiest they have ever been, competitor numbers were up this year after a small dip last and controversial internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom was a gracious host, opening his grounds to the public for scrutineering and sign-on then joining the promo vehicles for a quick run on Thursday morning in an AMG Mercedes-Benz. The event was organised with the support of sponsors Federal motorsport tyres, Instra Corporation, Metalman, NZ Classic Car magazine, TeamTalk, TrackIt and VTNZ.

Stadium Finance make rally driver’s dreams come true with Mitsubishi Evolution 8

Stadium Finance Media Statement – 2014 New Zealand Rally Championship Announcement 19 November 2013

Young rally driver, David Holder of Tauranga, is stepping up to a Mitsubishi Evolution 8 for next year’s 2014 New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC), after demonstrating his pace in the two-wheel-drive class in 2013. Holder (24) says he knows driving the Mitsubishi is a huge leap from his Stadium Finance Ford Fiesta but says he is looking forward to the challenge. “Obviously it will be a fairly steep learning curve, stepping up to New Zealand’s highest level of rallying but I’m really excited to have been given such an amazing opportunity,” says Holder. “Looking back, this was literally a dream two years ago. But now to actually be on the verge of going head to head with some of my New Zealand rallying idols is unreal.”

The opportunity, brought about with the support of Holder’s sponsors including Stadium Finance, comes after a year competing in the NZRC’s two-wheel-drive championship where the youngster challenged, and sometimes set faster times against more modern and more powerful Ford Fiesta R2’s. “The two-wheel-drive class was a great class to learn the intricacies of the championship in, as it was always so close between first and third. I also learnt a lot about pace-notes [detailed directions of the road] and car control among other things.”

The Stadium Finance Mitsubishi Evolution 8 was previously owned by multiple New Zealand Rally Champion, and world rally driver, Hayden Paddon, who also doubles as Holder’s mentor. “David [Holder] shows great potential as a rally driver. I’ve been working with him for a while now and he continues to make improvements to every aspect of rallying. I think he will be competitive in the Stadium Finance Mitsubishi Evo once he’s clocked up some miles in it,” says Paddon.

The Stadium Finance Mitsubishi Evolution 8 will be set up in full Group N specification, allowing Holder to benchmark his times against Nelson’s Ben Hunt who is set to contest the 2014 season in a similarly powered Subaru Impreza.

Holder says, “The age-old battle between Mitsubishi and Subaru starts again! I’d like to be challenging Ben [Hunt] but we know that he’ll be very hard to beat and has significantly more miles than us. But we’ll definitely be trying hard and hopefully we can be competitive against him towards the end of the season.” The Stadium Finance Mitsubishi will also sport similar livery to Paddon’s newer Mitsubishi Evolution 9 with Paddon and his team also helping to prepare Holder’s car before the beginning of the 2014 season. “Hayden’s [Paddon] support over the last two years has been truly humbling and it’s going to be even more exciting working closely with him preparing for next year.”

“We will also be writing our own notes this year which will be another new challenge. Hayden [Paddon] and John [Kennard] will be helping us with that as well, so we’re very thankful for their massive support.” While the new car is set to debut at the first round of the NZRC in April next year, Holder says there is still a significant amount of work to do before the season starts.

“We are extremely grateful to have had such good sponsors this season but we still have a lot of work to do in terms of securing the budget required to compete next year. Our Ford Fiesta from last season still needs to be sold which would certainly help in the interim but even so, there is still more work to do.”

Holder and his team are supported by loyal sponsors: Stella Pumps, Stadium Finance, Magnum Compliance, Gull, Rally New Zealand, Maurice Trapp Group, PRELIM, Chris Brown, Mckerchar Industries, Bay Panel Beaters, Mount Wheel Alignment, Speedy Signs, Sew Hot Monograms, Repco Mt Maunganui, Ultimate Ford Tauranga and Attentive Design. Stadium Finance offers nationwide finance and operates several branches around the country including Christchurch, Tauranga and Dunedin. The company is ‘the home of good sports’ and is involved with many sporting and cultural events around New Zealand. GT Radial Thunder In The Park

After two years of waiting, GT Radial Thunder in the Park returned to Pukekohe Park Raceway last weekend, with over 250 cars from Super Mini’s to NZV8’s racing in the two day event supported by long-time name in New Zealand Motorsport, GT Radial Tires, Thunder in the Park is famous for providing families and Motorsport fans with door-to-door action.

Not only was a broad cross-section of iconic Kiwi Motorsport showcased at Pukekohe Park Raceway, entertainment was on hand for event goers of all ages with the support of Kids In Cars – something GT Radial Thunder in the Park is proud of and well known for.

Proceeds from the sale of GT Radial Thunder in the Park Tickets will be donated to two deserving charities – Kids in Cars; a unique organisation set up to provide unwell children passionate about Motorsport with an opportunity to experience the thrill first hand, and the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Action ran through to 6.30pm on Saturday evening, with racing followed by a BBQ for event-goers partnered with a live band to keep people smiling well into the evening.

Race classes included in GT Radial Thunder in the Park’s 2013 line up are: NZV8 Touring Cars (Round One), V8 Muscle Cars, GT1 – GT2 Tranz Am, NZGT, Pre – 65, Porsche Club, Formula First, Mazda Pro – 7, SS2000, NZ Six & Super Mini Challenge. GT Radial Thunder in the Park spokesperson Martin Day said “Thunder in the Park is a truly family orientated event and it’s been important to us to keep costs as low as possible in order to provide an outing which is accessible to everyone in the region.”

“It’s an exhilarating, full on, action- packed weekend which can be enjoyed by all racing fans as well as those new to Motorsport. We hope people from the Franklin and surrounding districts embrace their motoring spirit and come to experience something that is uniquely special to Pukekohe and New Zealand Motorsport”.

The event was packed full of close racing and all the classes bring entertainment to the many race fans who had flocked to the circuit. The weekend saw heart brake for some and joy for others as The Motorsport Club were keep on there toe’s with a number of mechanical failures and the odd crash. The Formula First saw a nasty off at the new turn 4 with a car jumping 2 feet into the air but thankfully no one has hurt and no major damage was done.

We look forward to next years event and with the efforts of Debbie Day and the rest of the team its guaranteed to be a huge success.

Australian driver Jason Bargwanna and Nick Ross from Cambridge set Pukekohe Park Raceway ablaze this weekend battling over the lead in the three races of the NZV8 Touring Cars TLX class.

After claiming pole position in the Top 10 Shootout Ross in the Holden Commodore looked to have a good chance of winning the round but it was Bargwanna in the Toyota Camry who eventually came out on top with two wins and a second placing him on top of the podium. The pair fought hard in all three races with Ross making the most exciting pass of the weekend when in race two he slipped inside Bargwanna at the hairpin in the final lap coming through to claim the chequered flag. Prior to making the pass Ross had moved up from fifth on the grid catching the Australian but unable to get around him and at one point making contact with the driver's Toyota. Bargwanna once again held off Ross in race three this time all the way to the end.

"Thanks to Nick for putting a dent in my door and getting me fired up for the final race." said Bargwanna while accepting his trophy for the weekend. In third place overall was rookie driver Shaun Varney in the Ford Falcon. In the NZV8 Touring Cars TL class it was James McLaughlin who claimed the weekend's victory against Ian Booth also with two wins and a second. Early on It was all looking good for Booth after winning the opening race on Saturday ahead of McLaughlin but in Sunday morning's race he fell victim to a flat tyre and in the final was unable to match McLaughlin and forced to settle for second.

"The car is great and a big move up from the one I was driving before." said McLaughlin who has moved up to the NZV8TC this year from the Holden Sixes. In third place overall was Grant Molloy.

The NZV8 Touring Cars are a two class series consisting of the New Generation NZV8 race cars open to various manufacturers rather than just Ford and Holden and the TL class which is made up of the older Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon race cars built to the NZV8s specifications.

AUCKLAND CAR CLUB MOTORSPORT REPORT

Bruce McLaren Tour Continues

Tuesday 10th September. Plan for the day: Visit the Rofgo Car Collection; then drive to Arundel.

The Rofgo Collection is a privately owned and visiting is by invitation only. In addition to the main tour group some others were invited. The enlarged tour group met at a Hotel near Basingstoke, before proceeding in convoy to the Collection which is way out in the country. Apparently the Collection started with a few McLaren cars when someone suggested that that the collection should have a “theme”. Since then cars wearing the Gulf Oil sponsorship colours have been added – including two Le Mans McLaren F1 GTRs, in Short and Long Tail versions. Other Gulf cars in the collection include: An Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 – as it came off the track at the of a Le Mans race, complete with squashed insects, oil stains, brake and tyre dust; Lola Aston Martin LMP1; Audi R8 LMP1; Porsche 908 and 917; Mirage M1, M2, GR7 and GR8; Howmet TX (Gas Turbine); Ford GT40. Non-Gulf liveried cars include: Brabham BT26: McLaren M14, M16B (Indy car), M19A (in Yardley colours), M20 (development from the M8 series). One of our tour group – Bruce McTavish – was very interested in the M14, it was one of the cars that he built while working at McLaren. Bruce was disappointed to see that metal strakes had been added on each side of the cockpit (to help a more recent driver to get out of the car) and suggested ways in which the car could be restored to its original state.

Look at www.gulfracing.com or search for “Rofgo Collection” via Bing or Google (look at the Duncan Hamilton sites). While the Collection seems to be “hidden”, some research may find an opening for a group invitation. The complementary Souvenir guide is impressive

From Rofgo to Arundel, using the M3, M27 & A27. There is a seamless transition between these motorways & roads. The 120Km trip took less than 90 minutes. On first sight of the Swan Hotel we were expecting small rooms, shared bathroom facilities, and no WIFI – the place is very old. After a delayed check-in - around 4.00pm - we found the rooms are quite large (but not quite a big as the spacious Holiday Inn at Woking), with en-suite facilities, and WIFI. However, no Lift and the stairs are narrow and steep – will the bannisters survive our visit?

Wednesday 11th September. I took a stroll around Arundel while most the others went on a tour of Norfolk Castle. In the afternoon, four of us went to Gosport to look at the Submarine Museum – contrary to what some of the wags said, wet suits were not necessary. We took a tour of the ex-WW2 submarine which is being restored. The tour guide had served on similar vessels. The UK school holidays have just finished and the guide was delighted to have an all adult tour party. When we got to the control room the guide pointed to the ladder leading up in to the conning tower and said it was the first time he had seen it in three weeks – kids would run ahead of the group and climb up in to the tower. I wasn't uncommon to lose some one and searches would have to be made to find the missing kids. On to the McLaren Old Boys and Girls dinner – about 240 present. After dinner the MC interviewed some early staff members and some more recent stars. One interview included Dan Gurney via Skype from his office at All American Racers. Along with some other matters the event didn't finish until about 40 minutes past midnight.

Thursday 12th September. After a fairly early breakfast we set off to Winchester, via the Motorway system. At Winchester we dropped off our luggage – too early for our rooms to be ready. Then headed to Goodwood using country roads, hopefully these roads would avoid congestion near Chichester. However, one of these roads was joined by a major road from London! Further on the roads were narrow and traffic on them was quite slow.

At Goodwood we met up with the rest of the tour group and a number of the guests from last night’s dinner. The meeting was for a memorial to Bruce McLaren which was celebrated by some speeches and a “minutes noise” provided by a McLaren M1. After the memorial, the group split up to view the cars being prepared in the paddock. An amazing collection of historic race cars representing the types that used to race at Goodwood (from just after WW2 until the late 1960's). The Ecurie Ecosse transporter complete with a 1960 Cooper Monaco, 1961 Sebring Sprite and the 1962 Tojeiro-Buick coupe were among the vehicles on display. Also present were 35 pedal cars modelled on the Austin A40 from the early 1950's. These will have races on Saturday and Sunday – using part of the Start/Finish straight. After lunch we went to the cricket match in front of Goodwood House. We had been told it would be a Drivers team facing a Lord March Invitation team. In fact both teams contained mostly drivers, including: Jackie Oliver, Dario Franchitti, Wayne Gardiner, Derek Bell, Alain de Cadenet, Anthony Reid and Rob Huff. and Doug Nye also played. Murray Walker and Brian Redman were umpires. It was a light hearted 25 over match. After the cricket finished we were treated to an aerobatic display by a single Spitfire. Included were several very very low passes over the cricket pitch – the Spitfire was flying much lower than those flying at Duxford last Saturday.

Friday 13th September. Practice day at Goodwood, I did not go due a head cold, better to stay indoors. Apparently the weather at Goodwood was not the best with some rain during the day.

Saturday 14th September. Off to Goodwood at 7.30 by way of M3, M27 and A27. Stop/start traffic began about one kilometre from the Circuit. The car park nearest the track is reserved for classic cars. Very impressive trade display area near the main entrance to the circuit. We only had General Ground Admission tickets – tour organiser left the bookings too late to get Grandstand tickets. I headed up to the Lavant corner to watch the races. The air display, at lunch time, featured a Spitfire Mk9, P51D Mustang and very rare P40B & P40F versions of the Curtiss Warhawk.

Sunday 15th September. The weather forecast is not good – strong winds and then rain expected in the afternoon. No traffic holdups at all. Our Grandstand tickets were for the Start/Finish stand – right at the back and not good viewing and the large screen TV was almost hidden by a tree. The stand faced into the wind – very, very cold. After lunch I viewed the rest of the racing from the exit of the first corner. Amazing side shows: Laurel & Hardy in a vintage car (with a tray sitting on the top of the engine heating sausages and chips, a road gang making repairs to the start/finish line – or setting up to do so before being taking a “well deserved” tea break, a re-enactment of the “Great Train Robbery” - including a genuine British Railways Wagon, the saucy girls from St Trinians, plus many more displays. Very good racing until the rain came in at about 3.30pm.

The Madgwick Cup races included the Lister-Bristol driven by Barry & Tony Wood.

The Royal Automobile Club TT Celebration races included: AC Cobra driven by David Hart & Tom Coronel; the Sunbeam Lister tiger driven by Tony Eckford & Rob Huff; the Jaguar E-type driven by George Fisken & Peter Hardman.

The St Mary’s trophy races included: The Mini Cooper S driven by Nick Swift & Oliver Gavin; The Galaxie 500’s driven by Bill Shepherd & Jochen Mass (70), and Michael Steele & Tim Kristensen (83); The Alfa Romeo 1600GTA driven by David Fitzsimons & Alex Furiani. The Mini had pole position for the first race, and the overall winner of the two races was the Alfa.

The Whitsun Trophy races were for GT40s. This was in celebration of 50 years of the GT40. The races had 27 starters and a further 13 were either on static display or participating in parade laps.

Monday 16th September. A leisurely drive from Winchester to Woking via Silverstone.

Tuesday 17th September. To Heathrow. The A380 was backed out of the terminal at 11.30am UK time. One hour at Singapore airport. Landed at Auckland at 10.15pm on Wednesday NZ time – 23 hours and 45 minutes after leaving the terminal at Heathrow. AUCKLAND CAR CLUB ADVERTISEMENTS
