Gerber This dissertation is a biographical study of Moses Hayim Luzzatto (1707–1746 or 1747). It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways. 73 The content of this verse suggests the inability of mankind to comprehend the knowledge and thoughts of God, as well as the 73 Isaiah 55: 8- 9. The context of the verse is that Isaiah is conveying the message to the people of Israel that the ability to return to God (Teshuvah) is available to them, since the “traits” of God are conducive to this. See Moreh Nevuchim ( The Guide to the Perplexed ) 3:20 and the Sefer haIkkarim Maamar 2, Ch. 3. 65 “Silence is your praise”: Maimonides’ Approach to Knowing God: An Introduction to Negative Theology divergence of “the ways” of God and the ways of man. The extent of this dissimilarity is clarified in the second statement, i.e. that it is not merely a distance in relation, but rather it is as if they are of a different category altogether, like the difference that exists between heaven and earth 74 . What then is the relationship between mankind and God? What does the prophet mean when he describes God as having thoughts and ways; how is it even possible to describe God as having thoughts and ways? These perplexing implications are further compounded when one is introduced to the Magnum Opus of Maimonides 75 , the Mishneh Torah . -
THE MAHARAL of POZNAŃ – the ERA of the POLISH LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH, 16Th–18Th CENTURY
COEXIST: POZNAŃ AND JEWS THE MAHARAL OF POZNAŃ – THE ERA OF THE POLISH LITHUANIAN COMMONWEALTH, 16th–18th CENTURY The establishment of a powerful dualistic state of the kingdom of Poland and the grand duchy of Lithuania, which since 1569 bore the name of Rzeczypospolita Obojga Narodów (lit.: Republic of Two Nations), created new conditions for the com- munity to thrive and develop. Given the amount of the coronation tax paid in 1507, the Jewish com- munity in Poznań was the third largest in Poland, after Lvov and the Kazimierz quarter of Cracow. This state of affairs continued until the end of the 18th century, though the recurrent natural disas- ters and numerous wars of the latter half of the 17th century brought many hardships to be faced. For COEXIST: POZNAŃ AND JEWS instance, after the great fires which ravaged the city in 1590 and 1613, Jews had to relocate to the suburbs and live there for a number of years. Yet they returned soon, as by 1619 their quarter boast- ed 134 new dwellings and burgher houses, inhabit- ed by around 1,500 people. The community had its synagogue, school and hospital. One of the prom- inent figures associated with Renaissance Poznań was rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, known as Ma- haral of Prague, alleged creator of the Golem. Born in 1520 and native of Poznań, the famed Talmudist, philosopher, Kabbalist, astrologer, and possibly al- chemist twice assumed the leadership of the local community as a rabbi. The Jews of Poznań and Greater Poland were represented in substantial numbers at the so-called Council of Four Lands (Va’ad Arba’ Aratzot) formed around 1580. -
Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). Indeed, the first passage quoted below was excerpted from the translated source text for Noahidism: Our Rabbis taught: [Any man that curseth his God, shall bear his sin. -
