ACT INFORMATION FOR JUNIORS

Now that our school year is well underway, we thought it important to share an update on the Wisconsin State Assess- ment Program and how that program affects our juniors. We are sharing this information now to make you aware of our preparations and plans as they relate to the junior assessment, the ACT exam, which will be taken in March by all public school juniors in the state of Wisconsin. The ACT has typically been a college admission test for students inter- ested in attending college following their high school career. Though it will still serve students interested in post- secondary education, it will also serve as an accountability measure for Wausau West.

This paper and pencil test will be given on the morning of March 9, 2021. As we near the testing date, additional infor- mation will be made available to parents and students about timing, expectations, and preparation for this exam. We have included below, answers to frequently asked questions and the Wausau West ACT test preparation schedule.

FAQ’s  Is there a cost to parents/families for juniors taking the tests on March 9, 2021? No, the state will be picking up the cost.  What if my son/daughter already took the ACT, do they still have to take it on March 9? Yes, ALL juniors in the state need to take the ACT test on March 9, 2021. The scores on the March ACT will also be used by each school for accountability purposes.  If a student chooses to take the test again, can he/she do it for free on the designated make-up day (March 23, 2021)? No, all juniors will be tested only once by statewide testing protocol. If a student wants to re-test, the payment for the test will fall to the family and must be taken on national test dates.  Can students take the ACT test multiple times? Yes, students can re-test at the family’s expense.  What if my student is ill on March 9, 2021? The make-up date is March 23, 2021.  Can a student’s test score from the March 9, 2021 test date be used for college admission? Yes it can, if you are testing under standard test administration or if you are identified as a special education student testing with ACT approved accommodations. Students using accommodations other than ACT approved will not be able to use their scores for college admission.  Can the student’s test score be used for admission into a technical college? Yes. For example, NTC uses the ACT scores and if a student has a composite of 18 or higher they will gain acceptance for admission into their college.  What if a student does not plan to go to a 2 or 4 year college, do they still need to take the ACT test? Yes, the March ACT test score will be used for school accountability purposes.  How will colleges receive the scores? When students fill out the pre-test information they will be able to select four colleges to receive their scores. Additionally, colleges will use the students’ highest ACT test score.

Can I get more information on what types of questions are on the ACT? Students can go to actstudent.org to find practice questions. There will also be optional (but highly encouraged) subject specific sessions offered throughout the month of January & February to interested students. Additional resources are available on the Counseling website.

NEWS FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE

WOW, WHAT A FALL!

AD Miller here! In early September we were not sure if we were even going to have fall sports for the Warriors. Well, we were given the opportunity and did we ever take advantage of it.

We did have some quarantines, but very few positive COVID cases. I think that was in large part because our coaches and athletes took the opportunity very seriously. Masks were worn, attendance and daily temps were taken, and practice pods were used to help minimize possible spread. As a result, all of the fall teams were able to complete their season. (Girls Swim and Football are still competing as I write.) I am very proud of how the Warrior family, coaches, athletes, and fans have handled themselves during this unusual fall season. I want to say thank you for being compliant with what we have asked.

Let me run down the highlights of this fall season. Our girls swim team did an amazing job figuring out how to hold meets safely and in doing so came up with three solid dual victories. The team regrouped after losing a key player to injury in the first game and had an unbelievable finish winning five straight on the way to the regional final. The Cross Country teams ran five dual meets, the boys swept all five and won the confer- ence championship. Varsity football is currently two and two with two games remaining and possibly a playoff spot ahead. JV and JV2 Football have been a steamroller through the conference. Girls’ was undefeat- ed conference champs. The team sent Natasha Baily and the doubles team of Katie Meyer and Anika Eder to state. Girls’ won the conference championship and sent Jasmine Yang to the state meet. Boys’ Soccer had a magical fall. Going undefeated and capturing their second straight conference championship. They came within one game of reaching State falling 1-0 in the sectional final game. They had numerous All-Conference selections and had the Conference Player of the Year for the second straight year. This year’s winner was Tim DeLoye.

Whew, what a great list of accomplishments. Our winter sports are just around the corner. We are confident that if our teams practice COVID safety as well as the fall teams have done, that we will be able to get all of our winter sports schedules completed and make a run in the winter tournament series.

My theme for coaches and athletes this year is “Be a Real Teammate”. Our current cultural climate has made it clear how valuable relationships are. We need to be with each other and to support each other. I have wit- nessed that through all of the teams and throughout the fall season. It makes being a Warrior something great.

I look forward to seeing our students and families at the upcoming events. Be safe and “Be a Real Teammate”.

Respectfully, Brian M. Miller – CMAA Athletic and Activities Director Wausau West High School “Be a Real Teammate”

DECA!

Wausau West DECA membership is well over 85 students and counting for the 2020-2021 school year. DECA prepares students to be academically prepared, community oriented, and professionally responsible experienced leaders. Our annual Trick or Can event on Halloween was an excellent success with 45 DECA members participating even during a pandemic. DECA members dropped off collection bags a week before Halloween and picked them up on Halloween (for contactless pick-up) to collect non-perishable food items for the Women's Community. This year West DECA collected 4,500 items. As we head into December and January, DECA students will begin to prepare for the competition. This year’s competition will look a lot different. The DECA District II Career Develop- ment Conference will be 100% virtual. Students will take a 100 question exam online and complete a role play and will have to upload their presentation online. Districts will be held the week of Janu- ary 4-8, 2021. Top scoring students will then advance onto State in March. FRIENDS OF EDUCATION AWARD WINNERS

Wausau West had two Friends of Education Awards nominated this year!

Rick Cveykus: Mr. Cveykus was nominated by Dawn Jameson, teacher at Wausau West High School.

Attorney Rick Cveykus has been a dedicated volunteer for the Wausau West Mock Trial team for three years. Starting in September and ending in March, he spends three hours a day, twice a week with stu- dents working on their court case. Those hours total over 120 volunteer hours a year. He played an in- strumental part in helping the Wausau West High School Mock Trial team students advance to the State Competition last school year. He has instilled in the students the importance of public speaking, critical thinking, and the art of forming persuasive and cohesive arguments. Rick challenges the students to be the best they can be. He helps them understand the roles they are portraying and his knowledge of the court system has been greatly beneficial to our students. Students state, “He has our best interest at heart. He always pushes us to do our best and always aims high.” Thank you, Rick, for your time and ef- fort on behalf of the Mock Trial Team. You deserve to be honored as a Friend of Education. Reyne Hauer: Ms. Hauer was nominated by Brian Miller, Activities Director at Wausau West High School.

Reyne Hauer has been a tireless parent volunteer for the girls’ volleyball and teams at Wausau West. She has been the main person for organizing concessions and other activities related to these sports. In particular, her efforts for the girls’ basketball concessions are notable. She spends a lot of her own time managing inventory, placing orders, and staffing the concession area for the many events that make up the West Warrior Girls’ Basketball program. This kind of help is vital to Warrior athletics. Her ef- forts help pay for the programs we offer our student athletes. She’s truly a Friend of Education.

WE WISH ALL OUR WARRIORS AND THEIR FAMILIES A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON!
