Jones • Band Conductor Program The Star-Spangled Banner John Stafford Smith /Arr. Brian Balmages / FJH Music Company In 1814, Francis Scott Key penned original lyrics to a relatively well-known melody by John Stafford Smith entitled “Anacreontic Song.” Key’s song, “Defence of Fort McHenry,” was later retitled “The Star-Spangled Banner” and gained popularity with the American public. The piece was first recognized for official use by The in 1889 and became our in 1931. Commissioned for the 2013 Ohio All-State Band, this setting has garnered wide acclaim for its expressive spirit and thoughtful construction. Brian Balmages, a graduate of James Madison University (VA) and the University of Miami (FL), is currently Director of Instrumental Publications for the FJH Music Company and on faculty at Towson University (MD).

Fanfare 1 Chronicles 13:8 Jim Territo / Jalen Publishing Commissioned by Miami University (OH) in 2004, this composition bears the title of a biblical passage in which King David is dancing “with all his might.” The music begins with the image of an approaching parade and culminates with an expression of unrestrained joy. Composer Jim Territo is a graduate of the University of Michigan and taught high school and beginning band, music theory, jazz, and music theatre at Detroit Country Day School 2002-2014. He currently works as a freelance music director, lessons teacher, jazz/rock keyboardist, and composer/arranger in New York.

Song for My Children Andrew Boysen, Jr. / Self-Published Andrew Boysen, Jr. is presently a professor in the music department at the University of New Hampshire, where he conducts the wind symphony and teaches conducting and composition. Boysen earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, and the University of Iowa. In the composer’s words, “The piece is not intended to be programmatic in any way, but I must admit that I was heavily influenced by images in my head as I composed. As I wrote, I couldn’t help but be filled with memories of holding my babies in my arms, watching them sleep peacefully, with them in the living room, celebrating on their birthdays and Christmas mornings, and enjoying our cherished vacations on the beach. My children mean the world to me and I treasure every moment I have with them. Ultimately, Song for My Children is just a simple expression of my love for Emily, Noah, Adeline, Ethan, Claire, and Ben.”

Gloriosa Yasuhide Ito / Bravo Music 1. Oratio 2. Cantus 3. Dies Festus One of Japan’s most celebrated composers, Yasuhide Ito was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan in 1960. His musical career began with childhood piano lessons and later compositional studies while in high school. Ito is currently a professor at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music in Kanagawa, Japan. This large-scale composition was premiered in 1990 by The Sasebo Band of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in Nagasaki, Japan. During the Edo Period in Japanese history (1603-1867), national leaders closed its borders to all foreigners over concerns that outside influences were eroding the country’s society and culture. One such influence was Christianity, which had been introduced by Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century. In order to avoid persecution, believers had to practice their faith in secrecy for nearly 300 years. The 23-minute composition is presented in three movements. The first movement opens and closes with the tolling of bells, and is based upon a Gregorian Chant on which a set of 13 variations follow. The second movement begins with the presentation of the “Song of San Juan” by solo piccolo – imitating the sound of the “ryuteki,” a traditional Japanese flute. The third and final movement is based largely upon a Nagasaki folk song “Nagasaki Bura Bura Bushi” from the Edo Period. The Gregorian Chant from movement one returns in the final moments of the composition, symbolic of the resilient nature of the human spirit.

10 2018 WSMA High School State Honors & Orchestra Thursday, October 25 • 4:30 p.m. Overture Hall at Overture Center for the Arts David E. Becker • Orchestra Conductor Program Academic Festival Overture, Op. 80 Johannes Brahms / Luck’s Music Brahms wrote this joyous Overture in acknowledgement of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy with which the University of Breslau had honored him in 1881. Brahms chose four popular songs of the university students and matched them with an original melody of his own: “Stately House”-song of loyalty to student fellowship “Most Solemn Tribute to the Fatherland” “Fox Song”- clownish freshmen initiation tune “Gaudeamus Igitur”: “Let us now enjoy ourselves, While we are still young; For when golden youth has fled, And in age our joys are dead, Then the dust doth claim us, Let us now enjoy ourselves”

Roadside Attraction from the American Vignette Garth Neustadter / Garth Neustadter Music Roadside Attraction is inspired by a road trip along one of America’s most famous and historic highways, Route 66. The orchestra echoes the sounds and spirit of a number of roadside “attractions” and curiosities that were once popular tourist destinations along the route, but have now fallen into disrepair and are largely forgotten. The movement begins somewhat impishly and mischievously, before embarking on a boisterous fanfare. The central section of the movement is improvisatory in nature, reflecting the energy and spontaneity of a rustic communal folk-dance around a fire; driving in rhythm towards a frenzied return to the opening sentiments of mirth, youth, and joviality. (written by Garth Nuestader)

Symphony No. 3, C Minor, Op. 78 (“Organ”) Camille Saint- Saens / Luck’s Music IV. Maestoso-Allegro Jeff Verkuilen, Organ Saint-Saens began his musical studies at a very young age, and at age 11 he played his first piano recital in Paris. At age 13 he became a student at the Paris Conservatory and three years later won the first prize in organ. He composed his most popular Third Symphony –frequently called the “Organ” Symphony because of the extensive and brilliant scoring for the instrument-on commission from the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1886. Saint-Saens himself conducted the premiere performance. The majestic finale to the Symphony in C Minor opens with brilliant organ chords and four-hand piano arpeggios. The coda presents a triumphant conclusion with brass fanfares, thundering organ sonorities, and festive solo timpani.

Malambo-Final Dance Alberto Ginastera / Boosey & Hawkes from Four Dances from Estancia, Op. 8a The great Argentinian composer, Alberto Ginastera, was commissioned to write this ballet by the American Ballet Caravan just three years after he graduated from the conservatory. The ballet focuses on the day in the life of the gauchos (Argentinian cowboys) on one of the cattle ranches. Four Dances from Estancia, Op 8a was premiered in 1943, and the complete ballet was performed in 1952. The Malambo-Final Dance features a ferocious dance contest between the gauchos, and the music continues to gain momentum in volume and rhythmic energy as it soars to a brilliant climatic ending.

(Program notes by David E. Becker)

The Overture Concert Organ is used by permission of the Madison Symphony Orchestra.

11 2018 WSMA High School State Honors & Treble Choir Thursday, October 25 • 8:00 p.m. Overture Hall at Overture Center for the Arts Edith Copley • Treble Choir Conductor Kira Morrissey • Accompanist Program

Gloria Kajoniensis Levente Gyöngyösi / Kontrapunckt Music Naomi Hasan, Eugene Yang, Violin; Bridget Duffy-Ulrich, Heather Thorpe, Percussion Gyöngyösi is a Romanian composer who immigrated to Hungary in 1989, one month prior to the Romanian Revolution. He studied composition and piano at the Bartok and Liszt Conservatories in Budapest. This exciting Gloria setting written in 2010 has won several awards and is scored for SSAA chorus, bongos, tambourine, and two violins.

Nuit d’etoiles (Night of Stars) Claude Debussy / Arr. Alan Raines / Walton Ethereal, arpeggiated chords in the piano begin this treble choir arrangement of the famous solo chanson by Debussy that depicts the sadness of a lost love. The translation of the French poem by Théodore de Banville (1823-1891) is as follows: Night of stars, beneath your veils, beneath your breeze and your perfume, a sad lyre is sighing, and I dream of a bygone love. A serene melancholy blooms in the depths of my heart, and I hear the soul of my beloved quivering in the dreamlike wood. I see again in our fountain your eyes, blue like the skies; this rose, it’s your breath, and these stars are your eyes.

Bogoroditse Devo Sergei Rachmaninoff / Arr. Veronica Sichivitsa / Musica Russica Bogoroditse Devo is one of the most frequently performed movements from Rachmaninoff ’s famous All-Night Vigil composed in 1915. The well-known Ave Maria text (sung tonight in Russian) is beautifully arranged for four-part a cappella treble chorus.

“Opening Chorus” from The Bartered Bride Bedřich Smetana / Arr. Emily Ellsworth / Boosey & Hawkes The Bartered Bride is one of Smetana’s most well-known compositions. The opera is filled with the spirit, sounds and rhythms of Czech folk music. In the opening chorus, the women of a small Bohemian town celebrate the consecration of their church. They sing of the joy of being young and in good health, before the “sorrows” of married life—never-ending housework while husbands go to the tavern. Since no one knows what the future will bring, they decide to celebrate and make the most of life.

Song of Ruth David N. Childs / Santa Barbara Music Publishing The Book of Ruth tells the story of Naomi, who immigrated to Moab with her husband and two sons due to a famine in Bethlehem. Her sons marry two Moab women, Orpah and Ruth. Unfortunately, Naomi’s husband dies soon after they arrive and 10 years later both her sons pass away, so she decides to return to Bethlehem. Orpah chooses to stay in Moab with her relatives, but Ruth insists on going with Naomi, saying Entreat me not to leave you. Ruth embraced Israel as her new home and worshipped their God. She remarried and had a son, Obed, who was the father of Jesse, who in turn was the father of David. A Moab immigrant who insisted on caring for her mother-in-law became the great-grandmother of a future King of Israel.

Cikala le Pong Pong Ken Stevens / earthsongs Rachel Schoenecker, Soprano Small Group: Catherine Buettmann, Lauren Hammes, Rachel Hammes, April Hull, Grace McMahon This vibrant, tribal Pakpaknese folksong from North Sumatra in Indonesia is typically performed with dancing at weddings or other celebrations. The text describes the parents who encourage their daughters to be well behaved. The addition of stomping, clapping, snapping, and glissandi to high register create an energetic arrangement for treble voices.

Your One and Only Life Susan Crowe / Arr. Stephen Smith / Rhythmic Trident This song established Susan Crowe as one of Nova Scotia’s leading folk artists. Smith’s 4-part women’s choral arrangement communicates a beautiful message from an older person’s perspective—a grandmother shares the importance of living your “best life ever” to her granddaughter.

I’ll Fly Away Albert E. Bramley / Arr. Craig Courtney / Beckenhorst Press Bridget Duffy-Ulrich, Piano A new arrangement for SSAA choir and four-hand piano of a well-known hymn tune. When this “one and only life” is over, we will all fly away!

(Program notes by Edith Copley) 12 2018 WSMA High School State Honors & Mixed Choir Thursday, October 25 • 8:00 p.m. Overture Hall at Overture Center for the Arts Richard Bjella • Mixed Choir Conductor Amy Wright • Accompanist Program

Let My Love Be Heard Jake Runestad / Jake Runestad Music LLC Though originally written for Choral Arts Northwest, this work has taken on a new life in light of the atrocities in Paris and Beirut. Jonathan Talberg, the conductor of the choir at Cal State Long Beach, led his singers in a performance during the memorial vigil for Nohemi Gonzalez, a Long Beach student who was killed in the Paris attacks of November 2015. Instead of rehearing Christmas music he passed out a brand-new piece of music (Let My Love Be Heard), rehearsed it, and then recorded it. Their musical offering is a powerful outpouring of grief but also a glimmer of light. (written by Jake Runestad)

Psalm 96 Jan P. Sweelinck / Theodore Presser Company JP Sweelinck is recognized by all to be among the most remarkable composers of his day. Here, Chantez à Dieu, from his Fourth Book of Psalms published in 1621, uses imitative techniques from both the French Renaissance and the Baroque, with a striking rhythmic complexity and an unusual richness of contrapuntal devices throughout.

Fantasie, Op. 80 Ludwig van Beethoven / Kalmus Small Ensemble: Lauren Barta, Brooke Boie, Meaghan Buckholdt, Robert Chelius, Hannah Dornfield, Kaitlyn Eggers, Joseph Gutzman, Joshua Hodge, Matthew Kim, Laura Laberge, Cecilia League, Emily Magee, Sam Mims, Noah Strube, Lucas Zuehl The Fantasia was first performed at one of Beethoven’s many “Academy” concerts on December 22, 1808 at which he presented new compositions including the premieres of the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies and the Fourth Piano Concerto as well as a performance of excerpts of the Mass in C major. To conclude this memorable (and exceedingly long concert), the Fantasia, Op. 80, written shortly prior, was thus composed expressly to fulfill this role. Only the choral conclusion, heard here, was completed by the time of the concert. A brilliant improviser, Beethoven himself played the opening piano solo. Unlike the ninth symphony, in which darkness struggles with light, the “Fantasie” contains only light.

Refugee Moira Smiley / Moira Smiley Music / Brad Klotz, Cajon Composer Moira Smiley writes; ‘My world was blown open in summer 2016 while volunteering at the Calais Jungle refugee camp in France. I woke to culture and language completely beyond my understanding, and also the simple power of humans making beauty together – from nothing. ‘My song, REFUGEE is about feeling bereft and misunderstood. We are all much closer to being refugees than we want to imagine. I have some hope that a resolute song can touch our hearts and change us.’ (written by Moira Smiley)

Past Life Melodies Sarah Hopkins / Morton Music Past Life Melodies is “a profound musical work which blends European antiquity with Aboriginal song lines and then transports one to Nepal, the roof of the world, where the monks are chanting”. (Stuart Phillpot). This iconic piece embraces several vocal techniques not traditionally used in Western choral music, namely open-throated chant singing, Aboriginal inspired chant and harmonic overtone singing.

Stabat Mater in g minor, D 175 Franz Schubert / Carus Only eighteen, Schubert used only the first four of 20 verses of the original 14th century text repeated twice with melodic and harmonic inventiveness. Most striking is the surprising entrance of “Quae morebat et dolebat” on the repeat of the text in the second half with a full diminished triad, delaying any perfect cadence until the final syllable of text.

Little Birds Eric Whitacre / Walton Music The composer writes; ‘I found a beautiful Octavio Paz poem and set it in its original Spanish. The work is an homage to Gabriel Fauré, with its running piano part and fluid sensual melodies.’ Whitacre’s setting opens and closes with an aleatoric section where the students are given several options of sounds to create, and by putting these sounds together create a cacophony evocative of a gathering of birds. Listen for the way the birds scatter at the end of the piece.

Cornerstone Shawn Kirchner / Santa Barbara Music Publishing Soloists: Joseph Gutzman, Bass; Laura Laberge, Alto Small Group: Lauren Barta, Joshua Hodge, Cecilia League, Neala Luedtke, Emily Magee, Mahriana Pyant, CJ Rislove, Tate Russell, Grace Thamban, Maggie Wallin Descant: Kaitlyn Eggers, Soprano Acclaimed for his singing, piano artistry, improvisatory skills, and compositions, here Kirchner goes for a direct hit with his vital declamations and powerful rising-tide style.

(Program notes by Richard Bjella) 13 2018 WSMA High School State Honors & Jazz Ensemble Friday, October 26 • 11:30 a.m. Madison Ballroom at Monona Terrace Convention Center Mathew Buchman • Jazz Ensemble Conductor Program Sir Gawain and the Green Night Lyle Mays / New Ashley Music Co. Soloists: Jack Johnson, Piano; Lyle Rivera, Guitar 2018 marks the 50th year of the WSMA Honors Project, and the 40th year of the WSMA State Honors Jazz Ensemble. Today’s program celebrates this milestone with emblematic pieces representing each of the four decades. Sir Gawain was a natural choice. Written by Wisconsin native Lyle Mays, it was recorded on Lab ’74 (with Fred Sturm in the trombone section!) and included on WSMA’s inaugural Honors Jazz Ensemble concert in 1978. Lyle provided some insight on his quintessentially 1970-era piece in an email: “Sir Gawain was my idea of what a southern rock big band chart might sound like—imagine the Allman Brothers with the Juke Horns…It’s supposed to have some hillbilly in it.” Piano gets most of the spotlight, though we do get to hear a touch of hillbilly guitar and bass at the end.

Wyrgly Maria Schneider / MSF Music Soloists: Henry Ptacek, Drums; Jasper Kashou, Tenor; August Braatz, Trombone; Lyle Rivera, Guitar Looking over the past 40 years of repertoire, I was shocked to discover nothing by Maria Schneider, one of the most critically acclaimed jazz composers of the last twenty years. According to Schneider, Wyrgly is about a monster and was recorded on Evanescence in 1994. Schneider wrote a double-time opening that reminds me of Michael Brecker’s auto- harmonizing EWI before the music takes on a decidedly sinister character. A tenor solo acts as a mystical interlude before we hear a “monsteristic” trombone and a screaming guitar solo. The piece ends with the wyrgly monster lurking off into the dark.

China Lake Mathew Buchman / Manuscript Soloists: Jack Johnson, Piano; Dan Bomier, Trumpet Chick Corea’s A Wave Goodbye (1991) provided some of the rhythmic inspiration for this piece, which features a tranquil main theme and a turbulent contrasting section. Although a nautical calm/storm/calm narrative certainly pertains, my alter explanation for the title is that lakes have waves and pentatonicism characterizes the music of China! A piano and trumpet solo help develop the two contrasting sections before the return of the main theme.

In the 80’s Bob Mintzer / Kendor Music, Inc. Soloists: John Stecher, Tenor Sax; Pierre Tan, Bari Sax; Rebecca Tank, Alto Sax; Kelly Robinson, Trumpet; Philip Buchman, Henry Ptacek, Percussion Besides the irresistible title, this emblematic piece is just one of many Bob Mintzer compositions that have been featured on WSMA concerts over the past 40 years. It was programmed for the 1989 WSMA Honors Jazz Ensemble by Dr. Bob Morgan. Mintzer has built an impressive career leading his own big band, serving as principal conductor of the WDR Big Band, and playing for twenty-eight years with the Yellowjackets. In the 80’s is a mambo full of intricate contrapuntal ensemble work, tricky rhythmic action and solos by the alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, as well as space for trumpet and the two percussionists.

To You Thad Jones / Kendor Music, Inc. Soloist: Travis Cooke, Trombone The award for the most frequently programmed piece in WSMA’s Honors Jazz Ensemble history goes to this beautiful ballad by Thad Jones. Although I didn’t assign a specific decade to this piece, its inclusion is a nod to this perennial favorite and to Jones’s enduring importance. Two recordings provided us with inspiring performances to strive towards: Eclipse (1979) and my favorite, To You – A Tribute to Mel Lewis (1990). Both recordings are models of nuanced phrasing and impeccable timing. This performance marks the fourth time the WSMA audience will hear this timeless classic. I trust it won’t be the last.

Feet Bone Duke Ellington / Alfred Music Publishing Soloists: George Davis, Alto Sax; Lucas Peterson, Trumpet; August Braatz, Travis Cooke, Karl Schuster, Trombone; Luck Ische, Bass Trombone; Philip Buchman, Drumset This selection honors Duke Ellington, whose music has been programmed for WSMA’s concerts more than any other composer. For me, it is also emblematic of the 1990’s, which saw the birth of Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington, a program that has helped promote Ellington’s (and a few other’s) big band music among high school students across the nation. Feet Bone is a blues shuffle in the classic Ellington tradition. The trombone section is featured, along with plenty of solo space for other members of the band. Honoring another WSMA tradition, the band learned Ellington’s Wings and Things by ear, which we weave into this performance disguised as backgrounds.
