Mt Sinai Congregation SUMMER 2020 ANNOUNCEMENT MT. SINAI We are excited to meet our new rabbi. Rabbi Benj Altshuler and his partner Rabbi Natalie Shribman will CONGREGATION arrive in Wausau in the middle of June. He starts work July 1st. While normally we do not have services in the UPCOMING EVENTS summer at Mt. Sinai, this summer we want to create opportunities for us all to get to know each other. MAY 30 – 11am VIRTUAL SHAVUOT TORAH STUDY Doing this in the middle of a pandemic is a challenge, but Check your email for the link and study guide! as we’ve seen over the past few years, Mt. Sinainiks are nothing if not resilient. Once Rabbi Benj is here, we will June 12 – 7pm have services and other get-togethers that will allow us to VIRTUAL FRIDAY NIGHT SHABBAT SERVICE We’ll have a short service followed by a BYO get and stay close while maintaining sufficient distance to oneg. If you want, you can even have some keep us safe. Because our underlying circumstances are candles ready to light. Sinai welcome! 1 MAZEL TOV Congratulations to Alexis Tate who graduated from Wausau East High School this spring. Wausau East is planning/hoping to hold a graduation ceremony in August to honor the graduates. Alexis will be continuing her education at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse where she plans to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Management. Noah Gordon and his fiancé Sabrina Crosby both recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma! Noah graduated Sigma Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. He will be starting medical school this July at KCU in Kansas City, Missouri. Sabrina graduated with distinctions from the Price College of Management. She will be working for Associated Wholesale Grocers in Kansas City, Kansas. A wedding is anticipated for next summer. Damien Bouchette is a 2020 SPASH (Stevens Point) graduate. He excelled both academically and athletically. Damien played two years of varsity football, one year of basketball, and four years of lacrosse. Damien will attend Carthage College and play on their intercollegiate lacrosse team! Matthew Steinberg is a graduate from Wausau West High School. Matt played hockey from Kindergarten all the way through High School. He is a natural athlete and also played some football, soccer, and track! Matt is interested in pursuing a degree in Sports Marketing/Management, and he has been accepted to several colleges! Stay tuned for which college he will choose.... he has not quite made his decision yet since he continues to tour campuses. Congratulations to Emma Rothweiler, Wausau East Class of 2020! TODAH RABBAH Thank you to the Musicants and everyone else who donated to the personal items collection bin. We donated 100+ toiletry items to the Wausau Schools, where the items will be distributed on their hygiene bus! Many thanks to Mike Kolasinski and Steve Blonsky for their years of service to the board and the congregation. Mike's board term has ended, and he continues to serve the community through his work with NAOMI. Steve is moving to the Milwaukee area. We've benefited from his expertise on the tech committee, and we wish Steve and Sue well in their new community! Todah Rabah to Larry Gordon, Andy Lynch and Steve Resnick, who spent a very long weekend installing our new video security system! We now have 11 cameras placed inside and outside the building, with the potential to monitor remotely in the event of a problem.     COACHING STAFF 2009-10 STANFORD WRESTLING Jason Borrelli Prior to coming to Stanford, Borrelli served as an assistant coach at Central Michigan Head Coach and ran a youth wrestling club. In his first year on the staff, he helped the Chippewas to their ninth consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship. The squad finished Central Michigan (2005) the season ranked fifth in the final dual meet rankings and finished 15th at the NCAA Second Season Championships in Detroit, Mich. Borrelli also helped guide three CMU wrestlers to All- America honors during the 2006-07 season. A Mt. Pleasant, Mich. native, Borrelli was a two-time Michigan State Champion in high school before beginning his career at Central Michigan in 2001. A four-year starter at 125 and 133 pounds, he was part of five consecutive team Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships. As a junior in 2005, he captured the 133-pound MAC title. Borrelli qualified for the ason Borrelli enters his second season as Stanford’s head coach in 2009-10, NCAA Championships at 133 pounds twice, in 2005 Jlooking to build on last season’s accomplishments.     The 2010 Teacher Advisor Panel Chris Bustle Brookfield East High School Chris used to dread teaching Shakespeare. Maybe “dread” is too strong, but she defi- nitely fell into the “ambivalent” category every time Hamlet or Macbeth rolled around. Of course, she loved the plays as only an English teacher would, but her stu- dents (those philistines) didn’t share her passion. While Chris swooned over Shake- speare’s imagery, they trudged through the acts, muttering oaths in their own colorful vernacular. One day it suddenly struck her that most of her students were not going to be English teachers, and perhaps they might enjoy Shakespeare if they could relate as human beings to his plays. Chris gradually came to understand she wasn’t doing her students any favors forcing Shakespeare down their throats, but what could a student love about Shakespeare? She tried to remember those real conversations she sometimes heard in her class when we were not busy analyzing Shakespeare’s language, those days she tossed the lesson aside and let her students take over. The questions those kids asked! Why do people cry at the final scene of King Lear? Why does it seem so hard to feel sorry for Macbeth? Where is Ophelia’s mother? Isn’t Denmark better off with Claudius as king (as opposed to Hamlet, that whiner)? Chris’s students did relate as humans to Shakespeare. She just didn’t often let them. One of her English professors said that he viewed with suspicion any student’s response to literature that began with “I feel.” However, with apologies to Mr.

  • 2018 Scholarship Awards
    2018 Scholarship Awards Since the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin’s inception in 1987, over $3.2 million has been awarded in scholarships through funds adminstered within the Foundation, impacting the lives of over 2,750 students and their families. Funds are established within the Community Foundation for various reasons including honoring or memorializing a loved one, supporting a particular field of study, recognizing a specific academic institution, or to benefit a particular student population. Scholarships are awarded annually from 110 funds utilizing donor directed criteria. Through the generosity of our donors, more than 200 students from pre-school to post-graduate have been awarded over $300,000 in educational assistance grants this spring. Scholarships will benefit the following students from north central Wisconsin and beyond as they enter the 2018-19 academic year: Katherine H. In early November we celebrated our Veterans and specifically Veterans on our West team -- Mrs. Sinz, Mr. Andreske, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Jensen. Mrs. Sinz served 8 years in the Army National Principal: Guard and finished as a Sergeant. Mr. Andreske served for 4 years as a Sergeant in the US Army Jeb Steckbauer – 715-261-0855 and works part-time at West as the outdoor supervisor. Mr. Brown works on our custodial team. He Associate Principals: served two tours in Afghanistan with the 10 Mountain Division. Additionally, Mr. Brown received a purple heart for being wounded in combat in 2009. Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Ray Jensen served Amber Haluska – 715-261-0861 in the United States Army for 24 years, beginning in 1989.
