  • Béla Zsolt Szakács the Fresco Cycle of the Holy Virgin in the Franciscan
Béla Zsolt Szakács The Fresco Cycle of the Holy Virgin in the Franciscan Church of Keszthely The fresco cycles of the former Franciscan church at Keszthely in Western Hungary count to the richest examples of this art in Central Europe. After its discovery in 1974, its restoration took almost a decade and it was published in several articles and catalogue entries. However, there are still obscure points in the decoration system among which I would like to clarify to a certain extant the cycle of the Holy Virgin. The Franciscan church was built by one of the most important aristocrats of his age, Stephen (II) Lackfi, who was an important member of the court of King Louis the Great (i.e. ban of Croatia and Dalmatia 1371-72, voivode of Transylvania 1372-76), and King Sigismund (palatine between 1387-92), but after loosing this position he revolted against the king and was massacred in February of 1397. He was buried in the Franciscan church at Keszthely where his tombstone is still preserved. For the dating of the church, the keystones can serve as starting points. In the sanctuary there is a keystone with the damaged coat of arms of the Angevin dynasty and another one representing the dragon of the Lackfi family, thus that part was surely built before 1397. In the nave, however, the symbols of another family, the Gersei Petõ, can be found, which can be attested in the region after 1404 and owned the town from 1427. The fresco cycle is limited to the sanctuary. Since in the lower zone painted symbols of the Lackfi family are preserved, it was probably ready before the founder's death of 1397.

  • Books About Music in Renaissance Print Culture: Authors, Printers, and Readers
BOOKS ABOUT MUSIC IN RENAISSANCE PRINT CULTURE: AUTHORS, PRINTERS, AND READERS Samuel J. Brannon A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Anne MacNeil Mark Evan Bonds Tim Carter John L. Nádas Philip Vandermeer © 2016 Samuel J. Brannon ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Samuel J. Brannon: Books about Music in Renaissance Print Culture: Authors, Printers, and Readers (Under the direction of Anne MacNeil) This study examines the ways that printing technology affected the relationship between Renaissance authors of books about music and their readers. I argue that the proliferation of books by past and then-present authors and emerging expectations of textual and logical coherence led to the coalescence and formalization of music theory as a field of inquiry. By comparing multiple copies of single books about music, I show how readers employed a wide range of strategies to understand the often confusing subject of music. Similarly, I show how their authors and printers responded in turn, making their books more readable and user-friendly while attempting to profit from the enterprise. In exploring the complex negotiations among authors of books about music, their printers, and their readers, I seek to demonstrate how printing technology enabled authors and readers to engage with one another in unprecedented and meaningful ways. I aim to bring studies of Renaissance music into greater dialogue with the history of the book.

  • Following the Trail of Piero Della Francesca
Art History Tour Following the trail of Piero della Francesca You are invited to take part in a week’s historic tour on location in and around the lovely hill town of Cortona in Tuscany. The tour will include visits to important cultural towns such as Siena, Arezzo and Orvieto, where you will see some of the most significant works by artists of the Early Renaissance era. The itinerary has been carefully designed to allow study and discussion (supported by slides) of the political, social and religious climate that influenced many of the works. There will also be lots of time for sight-seeing and leisure activities. Day 1) Cortona Our day begins with a tour featuring the works of three artists important to the history of Cortona: Fra Giovanni Angelico, Luca Signorelli and Pietro Berrettini whose works are on display in the Cathedral of Cortona, the Museo Diocesano (where Fra Angelico’s famous “Annunciation” masterpiece is housed) and the Museo del Accademia Etrusca. After lunch we visit the 13th century monastery of Le Celle and the Sanctuary of Santa Margherita, where the mummified body of St. Margaret is on display, followed by a walk down through the upper town with an overall look at the city gates, walls and Medieval houses. Return to the Hotel for dinner. Day 2) Assisi Half day tour with free time in the afternoon. We arrive first in lower Assisi at the Baroque church of Santa Maria degli Angeli which is built over and around the ancient church reconstructed by St. Francis of Assisi.

HENRY JAMES ITALIAN HOURS 2008 – All rights reserved Non commercial use permitted ITALIAN HOURS BY HENRY JAMES PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 1909 PREFACE The chapters of which this volume is composed have with few exceptions already been collected, and were then associated with others commemorative of other impressions of (no very extensive) excursions and wanderings. The notes on various visits to Italy are here for the first time exclusively placed together, and as they largely refer to quite other days than these--the date affixed to each paper sufficiently indicating this--I have introduced a few passages that speak for a later and in some cases a frequently repeated vision of the places and scenes in question. I have not hesitated to amend my text, expressively, wherever it seemed urgently to ask for this, though I have not pretended to add the element of information or the weight of curious and critical insistence to a brief record of light inquiries and conclusions. The fond appeal of the observer concerned is all to aspects and appearances--above all to the interesting face of things as it mainly <i>used</i> to be. H. J.
