Contributing factors to the public reaction to immigrants in general and Latinos specifically include the sheer size of recent immigration, the increasing prevalence of Latinos in the work force, and the geographic concentration of Latinos in certain areas of the country. Based on a conference held at the Julian Samora Institute(Michigan) in April 1995, this book is organized around two main themes. The first discusses patterns of immigration and describes several immigrant communities in the United States; the second looks in depth at immigration issues, including economic impacts, employment, and provision of education and other services to immigrants. Author relates this to recent shifts in anthropology and art history/criticism toward an increasing combining of art and anthropology and integration of art with social and cultural developments, and the impact of these shifts on Afro-American studies. To exemplify this, she focuses on clothing (among Maroons in the Guianas), quilts, and gallery art. She emphasizes the role of developments in America in these fabrics, apart from just the African origins. I will be arguing for the relevance to Afro-American studies of these broader disciplinary changes, which have fundamentally reoriented scholarship on arts that, for the most part, fall outside of what Joseph Alsop (1982) has dubbed "The Great Tradi- tions." Toward that end, I begin with a general assessment of these theoretical shifts (Part 1: Anthropology and Art History Shake Hands) before moving into an exploration of their impact on Afro-American studies (Part 2: Mapping the African-American Artworld). Abstract: What, how, and who is transbutch? In this thesis, I examine memoirs and personal essays that define and defy boundaries between “butch" and “transmasculine" subjectivity –– and investigate my own queer experience in the process –– in order to counter the myth of an irreparable trans/ butch divide. Deemed by some to be “border wars,” conflicts between transness and butchness are emblematic of the contested (hi)stories on which the identities are founded: namely, white supremacy, colonialism, transmedicalism, and lesbian separatism/trans-exclusionary radical fem- inism. Ensuing identity-battles –– which have increased with increased access to biomedical transition –– rely on a teleological approach to identity, and, I argue, may only be ameliorated by prioritizing experiential multiplicity and political affinity over fixed, essential truth. Through en- gagement with a variety of personal narratives by authors such as S. Hernandez Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Sonnet Retman, Associate Professor Department of American Ethnic Studies This project begins with an analysis of racial passing narratives, and considers the ways that the genre provides a useful deconstructive tool to better understand essence-based productions of race and racial authenticity within Chicana/o assimilation narratives. Through their critical exploration of the performative aspects of race, passing novels expose the fissures within these essentialist logics and in so doing they lodge their protest against the conditions under which passing could occur. I explore the ways that writers and artists have strategically used genre, knowing that readers will approach the text with a set of expectations, only to complicate the narrative while still operating within its formal conventions. This project maps strategic manipulations of genre as the primary tool to produce racial identities or exploit preexisting notions of race and gender with the aim to Hernandez 4 resist marginalization. I focus on the political discursive practices within both genres that judge passing and assimilation at the level of the individual. -

This essay proposes to contextualize Gloria Anzaldúa’s and Cherríe Moraga’s revolutionary approach and expose its theoretical and activist depth that has impacted both Chicana writing and –more broadly– contemporary feminist thought. Opinión de las trabajadoras sexuales (Prostitution and exploitation child sexual in Uruguay. Opinion of sex workers) Pablo Guerra Profesor - Investigador Universidad de la República (Montevideo, Uruguay) Resumen En este artículo presentaremos los datos que resultaron de la investigación titulada “Indagación sobre condiciones de trabajo y opinión sobre trata de personas entre población que ejerce la prostitución femenina en Uruguay” a partir de 188 entrevistas a trabajadoras sexuales. Partimos analizando el concepto de prostitución infantil en el marco de la explotación sexual de niños, niñas y adolescentes, para avanzar luego en el resultado del trabajo de campo. El 29% de la muestra expresa conocer casos de prostitución infantil en sus ámbitos de trabajo, lo que confirma una preocupante presencia de este fenómeno, sobre todo en la denominada prostitución callejera. En cuanto a la opinión, 77% de las entrevistadas tiene una opinión negativa del fenómeno. Palabras clave: prostitución infantil, explotación sexual, trabajo sexual, niñez y adolescencia. Abstract In this article we will present the information obtained in the project entitled "Investigation on conditions of work and opinion on trafficking in persons between population that he exercises the feminine prostitution in Uruguay " from 188 interviews to sexual workers. First we analyse the concept of child prostitution in the frame of the sexual exploitation of children and teenagers, to advance then in the result of the fieldwork. 29 % of the sample expresses to know cases of child prostitution in his areas of work, which confirms a worrying presence of this phenomenon, especially in the street prostitution. -
