He is the first WHO Director-General to have been elected from multiple candidates by the World Health Assembly, and is the first person from the WHO African Region to serve as WHO’s chief technical and administrative officer. Immediately after taking office on 1 July 2017 Dr Tedros outlined five key priorities for the Organization: universal health coverage; health emergencies; women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health; health impacts of climate and environmental change; and a transformed WHO. Prior to his election as WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012–2016. The transformation he led as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health improved access to health care for millions of people. Under his leadership Ethiopia invested in critical health infrastructure, expanded its health workforce, and developed innovative health financing mechanisms. Beyond Ethiopia, Dr Tedros’ global leadership on malaria, HIV/AIDS, and maternal and child health has been immensely impactful. -

Asgardia: Space Nation Or Pie in Sky?
ASGARDIA: SPACE NATION OR PIE IN SKY? What is Asgardia? Asgardia is the nation-state of space, a new nation dedicated to expanding peaceful exploration of space for the benefit of humanity. It is led by Igor Ashurbeyli, chairman of UNESCO’s Science of Space Committee and founder of the Aerospace International Research Centre in Vienna. At first glance, it’s an amazing concept and surely one that every space scientist should welcome. According to its website, Asgardia will offer an independent platform, free from the constraint of a land-based country’s laws. It will become a place in orbit which is truly ‘no man’s land’”. Its first aim is to launch a satellite in October 2017, Artist's impression. Image via James Vaughan on the 60th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik. Another goal is to create a “protective shield” from threats to life on Earth, such as space debris, coronal mass ejections and asteroids. The project, announced at a press conference in Paris on October 12, 2016, is urging people to sign up to become citizens. Ashurbeyli has said that when the number of applications goes above 100,000, the organisation can officially apply to the UN for the status of state. The claims are visionary – but could they be something of a mirage? In Norse mythology, Asgard is one of the Nine Worlds of the ancient gods, ruled over by Odin. Set in the skies, it is connected to Earth by the rainbow bridge, Bifrost. In taking the name Asgardia for the new “nation state”, the founders call upon its potential citizens to create an independent world of peaceful scientific cooperation Space. -
Constitution, the Flag, the Coat of Arms and the Anthem
Flag of Asgardia Coat of Arms of Asgardia The final decision on the national symbols will be passed by the Parliament of Asgardia 2 CREATING A SPACE NATION On 12 October 2016, at a press conference in Paris, Igor Ashurbeyli, a distin- guished aerospace scientist, visionary and philanthropist, announced the creation of Asgardia, the first space nation in the history of humanity. It is a global, integrative project, aimed at fostering peace, providing free access to space technologies for all nations and their citizens, and protecting planet Earth from natural and man-made threats from outer space. Asgardia’s concept comprises three parts – philosophical, legal and scientific/technological Asgardia invites everyone into the future 3 PHILOSOPHY Asgardia’s philosophy began with selecting the nation’s name – Asgardia. In ancient mythology, Asgard was a country in the skies, the country of gods, the country of dreams. Asgardia’s distinction in the philosophical sense is serving all humanity and every individual regardless of their personal prosperity or the prosperity of their country of origin Asgardia’s philosophical envelope is to ‘digitalise’ the Noosphere, the mirror image of humanity in space, but without the Earthly division into states, religions and nations. In Asgardia, we are all - Earthlings! Asgardia’s motto is: One Humanity – One Unity. 4 Asgardia is a nation of free-thinking people Steve Bronstein/ Getty Images LEGALITIES Many of the problems relating to global space law remain unresolved. There is too much influence of geopolitical conflicts, rooted in the history of Earthly nations. That is why it is time to create a new judicial reality in space.
