BASKETBALL STUDY GUIDE 1. offense - when you or your team has the ball and are trying to score. 2. offensive stance - a basic position one should assume when first receiving the ball within shooting distance of the basket: from this position one can: (1) shoot (2) pass or (3) dribble. 3. dribble - when you bounce the ball off the floor one or more times to maintain possession or to move from one spot on the floor to another. 4. double-dribble - a violation that occurs when one dribbles, stops, then dribbles again: also called if one dribbles with both hands on the ball at the same time. 5. traveling - a violation that occurs when one moves both feet while holding the ball after having taken the allotted two-step stop. 6. pivot foot - the foot you keep planted to avoid traveling with the ball. 7. free throw - a shot from the free throw line (foul line) awarded as a result of a foul; worth one point. 8. field goal - any made shot from any spot on the floor except for an awarded free throw. Worth 2 points, shots from behind the 3 point semicircle are worth 3 points. 9. foul - violations of the rules that deal with physical play and sportsmanship. a. personal foul - a foul called against a player for common physical violations. Includes blocking, reaching, charging, and over the back. Each player is allowed five fouls before being removed from the game. b. offensive foul - a foul called against you if youʼre in possession of the ball (charging); no shots are awarded for an offensive foul. c. technical foul - a foul called against you for fighting or arguing; can be called against a player in the game, a substitute on the bench, or even the coach. d. team fouls - by adding together all the fouls of all the players on a team one can determine the number of team fouls. After a team has 7 team fouls the opponents will begin to shoot free throws, one plus one, for any foul that is not a “shooting” foul. At 10 team fouls they will shoot 2 shots. **(If youʼre fouled in the act of shooting, at any point in the game, youʼll get to shoot 1, 2, or 3 free throws regardless of how many team fouls there are)** e. one plus one - if you make your first shot, you receive a bonus shot (not for “shooting” fouls). f. one free throw - awarded if you were in the act of shooting and made the shot (a “shooting” foul). g. two or three free throws - awarded if you were in the act of shooting but missed the shot. You get 2 free throws if you were attempting a 2 point shot, 3 for a 3 point shot attempt. 10. free throw lane - during foul shots one cannot enter the free throw lane until the ball has made contact with the basket. During game play, the offensive team may not remain in the lane for longer than 3 seconds at a time. 11. defense - when the other team has the ball and youʼre trying to keep them from scoring. a. man-to-man - when you guard a specific person on the other team. b. zone - when youʼre assigned an area of the court to guard instead of a specific person 12. jump ball - used to start the game. The referee tosses the ball up between two players who attempt to tap it to their teammates. 13. back court - the half of the court thatʼs opposite the basket where your team is trying to score. 14. front court - the half of the court where your team is trying to score. 15. back court violation - once you take the ball from the back court area into the front court you cannot pass it or dribble it back over the center line into the back court area. If you do, and a player from your team touches it first, then itʼs a violation and your team loses the ball..
